Google Releases October's Android Platform Distribution Numbers – Jelly Bean At 2.7%, Gingerbread Still Hanging On At 54%

Once again and right on time, Google has released Platform Distribution numbers for Android, this time for the month of October. The numbers still show Gingerbread holding on at just over 54%, but Jelly Bean is gaining a little more ground at 2.7%, up 0.9% over the previous month.

Again, the Gingerbread/Jelly Bean numbers are a bit disappointing considering the extremely small change from the previous cycle (a change of less than 1% for each), but it's worth noting that these numbers will (hopefully) be helped along by updates rumored to be coming soon (or those that just arrived).

Download The Android 4.2 Camera/Gallery App With New UI, Editing, Photo Sphere [Update: Now With Working Sphere Viewer]

UPDATE: We've updated the links below with an install package that lets you capture and view Photo Spheres right on your handset.

One of the most popular features introduced Monday with Android 4.2 was a revamped camera/gallery app (that we got a peek at early). The camera introduces a new focus/settings UI (popping up with an "options ring" only when you need it), a refreshed gallery interface, and of course – Photo Sphere.

Photo Sphere, for those who missed it, allows users to capture 360° images of their surroundings a la Google Maps, using XML data in concert with an enormous JPG file to help you save an immersive photo experience of where you've been.

Android Open Kang Project (AOKP) Jelly Bean Reaches Milestone 1 - Major Bugs Fixed, Last Update Till 4.2

As some of you may have noticed, I'm Android Police's resident AOKP nut, running the popular custom ROM on both on my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. Good news, everyone: Android Open Kang Project has reached Milestone 1 of its Jelly Bean release, and official downloads are now available for all flavors of Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and Nexus S. More supported devices should be updated tonight and tomorrow.

Team Kang notes that this will be the last update before the Jelly Bean 4.2 AOSP code becomes available, whenever that is. All of the bug reports from popular modder forum RootzWiki and those submitted to Team Kang's Twitter account have been addressed.

Counterpoint: The Android 4.2 Tablet UI Looks Just Like A Giant Phone's, And That's A Shame

Yesterday my colleague and fellow Android fanatic David Ruddock took a long look at what was revealed in the leaked Nexus 10 images, examining what will almost certainly be the Android tablet interface for Jelly Bean 4.2. I have a lot of respect for David, but in this case I think he's wrong. And since there's little doubt at this point that the Samsung Nexus 10 will have the same basic UI structure as the Nexus 7, I'll go so far as to say that Google is wrong too.

Having used my fair share of Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich tablets, I've come to love the user interface, which puts both navigation, status and settings all along the bottom bar.

Jelly Bean OTA Rolling Out To HTC One X In Asia Starting With Taiwan

It looks like a couple of HTC's Asian One X variants are receiving updates to Jelly Bean which appear to have begun rolling out earlier today. XDA users confirm that the update carries Jelly Bean 4.1.1 (not the latest 4.1.2) along with HTC's latest and greatest version of its Sense UI, and weighs in at about 353MB.

You may remember that HTC North Asia's general manager Jack Tong promised that One X owners in Asia could expect the update to begin rolling out to the One X today, with the One S slated to receive some Jelly Bean goodness at an unspecified later date.

Jelly Bean Updates Arrive To Unbranded Galaxy S IIIs In Nordic, Middle Eastern, And GME Countries

Samsung is definitely on a roll with the Galaxy S III updates - not a day goes by without a massive rollout of Jelly Bean to devices all over Europe, and now the Middle East as well. The company began sending Android 4.1.1 OTAs to the following territories:

Branded

  • Austria (T-Mobile)
  • Germany (O2, T-Mobile)

Unbranded

  • Middle East: Egypt, Iraq, Turkey, UAE
  • Greater Middle East: Afghanistan, Mauritania, Pakistan
  • Nordic countries (NEE): Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Iceland

We heard the rumor yesterday and now it looks like our dreams have come to pass! Sprint's Galaxy S III will be receiving an OTA Jelly Bean upgrade starting today. Of course, this also bring a new TouchWiz update as well, but fortunately, things like Google Now and widget organization magic will remain intact. Here's the changelog:

Carphone Warehouse Outs The Nexus 4 (Again), Claims Pre-Orders Ship By October 30th

It seems a little fitting that the first site to give us an indication of when we'll get our hands on the Nexus 4 was also the first site to leak its name. According to a device listing page that has now been pulled, the newest, shiniest, sparkliest Google hardware may be available pretty soon after the announcement next week. The Carphone Warehouse says that pre-orders will ship on October 30th. Dang, that's fast.

Of course, don't take that as canon, since there's a lot of suspicious stuff going on in this page. For starters, the press shot of the Nexus 4 being used here is the same one we spotted yesterday on evleaks.

[Rumor] Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean Update May Or May Not Arrive To Sprint Tomorrow, October 25th

I've been debating posting this all day for the reasons I'll explain below, but based on the feedback from a number of people who claim to be Sprint insiders, the information leaked earlier today in an XDA post by user supercholo may be legitimate. The leak suggests that the Jelly Bean update for Sprint's Galaxy S III may be arriving starting tomorrow, October 25th. Here is the alleged internal memo stating so:

Whether the memo is 100% legitimate or not, and whether Sprint actually follows up tomorrow remains to be seen - it's not the first time the company played tricks on its employees, and it's not the first time a software update was delayed.

Jelly Bean Updates Roll Out To Unbranded UK, Switzerland, Luxemburg Galaxy S IIIs And Branded Ones In 8 Other Countries

The pace at which Samsung is pushing out Galaxy S III Jelly Bean updates is picking up steam in Europe with the much anticipated arrival of Android 4.1.1 for unbranded UK handsets. The Brits aren't the only ones getting it today - in fact, the list is quite sizeable. Here, check it out:
