[New App] Path Unveils New Talk Instant Messenger, Removes Friend Limit, And Acquires TalkTo Place Messaging Service

Despite the lack of all that many updates this year, the folks behind Path have big plans for their social networking app. Today the company has announced its acquisition of TalkTo, a company that allowed customers to get information about the businesses and places around them via text messages. It did this by hiring agents who would phone these locations and acquire the information in your place. Later this summer, Path plans to roll this functionality into its newly unveiled Path Talk instant messenger, where it will be known as Place Messaging.

WhatsApp Announces That Its Instant Messenger Has Crossed The Half-Billion Active Regular Users Mark

If you want to know why Facebook spent just one billion dollars shy of twenty Instagrams for WhatsApp, look no further than the instant messaging app's number of users. WhatsApp today announced that it now has over half a billion active users. This means that 50,000,000 have signed up since the company's acquisition two months ago and continue to use the app. That's a ton of communication, much of it in parts of the world where Facebook's footprint isn't as large.

Samsung's ChatON Instant Messenger Has Doubled Its User Base In Only 4 Months, Now Has 100 Million Subscribers

Samsung's ChatON comes pre-installed on a good number of the world's Android devices, and while many of you would take that as reason alone to overlook the app, a good number of other people take the time to check it out. 100 million, apparently. Samsung's happy to announce that its instant messaging platform has doubled the number of users it had back in May. Their excitement is understandable, considering the app first launched in October of 2011.

Trillian For Android Upgraded To Version 2.0, Gets A Holo-Friendly UI Overhaul, New Emoticons, And More

Trillian has been around for quite a long time. This isn't a hip teen's chat client - it's their father's. No seriously, many of the people who used this IM client back when it was fresh are old enough to have children now. Trillian came to fame at a time when consolidating chat clients into one piece of software was almost a necessity on consumer desktops, as running several of the official messengers at once was such a memory hog.

BlackBerry Messenger For Android Appears In A Video Preview (Working Mirror)

PSA: AIM and Google Talk Can Now Talk To Each Other; All 9 AIM Users Are Essited

Last week, TechCrunch posted a little announcement that got all 9 people who still used AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) very excited, as all their buddies had already left the dying empire and migrated to Google Talk, and AIM was starting to get kind of boring without them. AOL to the rescue - the company (or whatever is left of it) quietly announced that starting sometime this week, AIM and Google Talk users would be able to become BFFs again, all without switching away from their respective clients.

For The Conversationalists - Today's Free Premium Amazon Appstore App Is Trillian (Normally $4.99) [4/16/11]

After a bunch of relatively uninteresting premium apps given out for free in Amazon's Android Appstore, today's offering is really quite refreshing. Users of the desktop version of Trillian will instantly recognize their beloved multi-network IM client's logo, and those new to it will find its features quite impressive:

  • support for AIM, Facebook, Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, and, of course, Google Talk
  • Trillian synchronizes contacts, avatars, statuses, and accounts between Android, Mac, Windows, and Web clients
  • push notifications for those on Android 2.2+
  • multiple chat windows, emoticons, and more

While Trillian is no longer my client of choice on the desktop (Digsby took that spot), I must say that if you're looking for a great multi-network IM client on Android, it's hard to go wrong with this [normally $4.99] offering from Cerulean Studios.
