CyanogenMod Has Now Been Installed On Over 2 Million Devices, Doubles Install Numbers Since January

It's amazing what a new look can do for a platform, isn't it? Back in January, we reported that CyanogenMod, the most popular third-party Android ROM, reached one million unique installs. Now, a little more than four months later, that number has doubled, according to CM's stat tracker. This is huge.

For those who are curious as to how the stat counter works, here's a more detailed explanation. The short version is that unique hardware is counted, so reflashes and reinstalls don't count towards the total. From CM's site:

"The data sent includes an non-reversible encrypted hash of your IMEI or MEID, allowing us to track unique devices without compromising privacy."

Cyanogenmod has been in development for years and only reached the million install mark, which included official and unofficial installs (KANGs), just a few months ago.

New Data Shows Android Has Surpassed iOS For App Downloads, But Still Has Far Fewer Apps Downloaded Per Person

An analysis of recently compiled data by ABI Research indicates that Android phones are for the first time downloading apps in greater numbers than Apple's iPhone. This would seem like a milestone, but ABI's research also shows that while the total number of apps downloaded onto Android devices in the last quarter exceeds that of the iPhone, Android handsets outnumber iPhones by a factor of 2.4 to 1.

This means that Android users are still downloading far fewer apps on an individual basis than iPhone owners - ABI suggests by a ratio of 2 to 1 one, in Apple's favor.

The growing marketplace for app revenue on Android is clear, as Android growth continues to outstrip the iPhone by a significant margin, app developers are turning their attention to the mobile OS that was once considered a lost cause in terms of making a profit.

Google Says Over 3 Billion Android Apps Have Been Installed And 350,000 Devices Are Being Activated Per Day

On their earnings call today, Google revealed some impressive stats about Android, courtesy of Jeff Huber, Senior VP of Commerce and Local. There were three notable facts, in particular: there have been over 3 billion Android apps installed, downloads of Android apps are up 50% in the last quarter, and 350,000 Android devices are being activated per day. Whoa, whoa, and whoa.

Given that we've heard about the massive number of activations before, perhaps the most impressive numbers are those about apps. As TechCrunch so eloquently puts it: "The first billion installs took 20 months, the second billion installs took another 5 months, and the third billion took only 2 months." Given that downloads jumped a ridiculous 50% in the past three months, it the next 3 billion will likely happen in no time at all.

Developers, Take Note: Google Unleashes Fascinating New Android Market Statistics And Charts For Your Apps

Late last night, the Android team pushed out a set of changes to the Android app publishing interface that developers use to upload and maintain their apps. The new features, while completely invisible to the end-users, are absolutely fascinating to app developers.

Each app now has a Statistics link, which consists of the following:

  • a Google Finance-style Flash chart of all installs, the time period for which you can adjust as you see fit
  • Android versions (conveniently placed side-by-side with the same stats for all apps in the Market)
  • specific device models
  • countries where your app is downloaded from (also side-by-side with countries for all apps in the Market)
  • languages used on the phones with your app on them (also compared to the global stats)
