The support docs for Verizon's variant of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 have just been updated with details of a new OTA LP11 that will bring Ice Cream Sandwich. The update for the Wi-Fi version started rolling out in the US several weeks ago, and T-Mo started pushing the update through Kies to its variant earlier this month.
It's nice to see Verizon make right in a somewhat timely manner, as this update brings some really nice features to the device, and the addition of ICS makes it feel like an entirely new tablet. Read More
The RAZR M was certainly one of the more interesting phones Motorola announced last week, even if it did come with a disappointing definition of "edge-to-edge." Today, the phone launched on Verizon Wireless, but if you're already looking to score a discount, Wirefly has both the black and white versions available for $79.99 with a new two-year contract, or for upgrading customers.
Keep an eye out for Ron's review of the RAZR M later today. Read More
About a week ago, I reviewed the Diamond Multimedia AMP1000 set-top box. Throughout the review, my one major complaint with the device was that the Android 2.3 interface is nothing short of terrible on a large display. The ray of shining light through it all, though, was the fact that Diamond promised an Android 4.0 update was coming soon.
I have to be honest here: I expected it to be weeks - or even months - before the ICS update was ready to go. Read More
In all the Jelly Bean excitement, it can be easy to forget that only 20% of Android users are running Ice Cream Sandwich. Today that number gets just ever so slightly larger, though. AT&T has announced that the Samsung Captivate Glide will be upgraded to 4.0 starting today, September 7th. Woo!
The update will only be available via Kies, so head to your favorite desktop computer post haste. It will not be rolling out over the air. Read More
With the end of another month, we now have another set of Android platform distribution numbers to look at. Updated today, the stats reveal that Gingerbread is still dominating by quite a large margin, with Ice Cream Sandwich climbing and Jelly Bean making its own gains. Take a look for yourself:
First up is Gingerbread. While its stranglehold on the distribution chart is still going strong, it has dropped off just a little bit since the last cycle, sliding from 60.3% of all devices to 57.5% last month. Read More
Today, Spotify's Android app received an update that should please audiophiles the world over (where available): if you're using the mobile app on Ice Cream Sandwich or above, you can now access an equalizer from the Settings menu. The features is actually called "Audio Effects" in 4.0, but on Jelly Bean it's been changed to the more readily-recognizable "Equalizer" moniker.
Also new is the ability to share music via NFC. Read More
All Wi-Fi versions of Samsung's Galaxy Tab series should have ICS by now, but, as always, carrier connected versions of the devices are left out in the cold. T-Mobile is the only carrier thus far to break that mold when it updated the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus earlier this month.
In a move that should make other carriers feel bad about themselves, T-Mobile has now made available ICS for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, as well. Read More
BaconReader, one of the most popular Reddit-browsing clients available for Android, has just received a major update to version 2.1. Among other things, the update brings a new "Welcome Guide" for new users, access to subreddit sidebars, subscription functionality, support for spoiler alerts, a dark theme for the app's "large" widget, and a few minor fixes.
Of course the real story in this update is the app's UI overhaul. BaconReader has finally crossed over to a new design, which ostensibly follows the highly-exalted Android Design Guidelines. Read More
Facedroid, Platinum Apps' tablet-centric Facebook client, got a major update today, bringing the app up to version 2.0.
For those who aren't familiar, Facedroid, which was released back in December of 2011, is a powerful Facebook client that looks to replace – and improve upon – Facebook's own mobile experience. The app does everything you'd expect and more, allowing for quick browsing, sharing, and updating, and its 2.0 update brings even more functionality, along with a guidelines-inspired redesign. Samsung has been slowly but surely pushing Ice Cream Sandwich to last year's Galaxy Tab series. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi was the most recent Tab in the series to get the update here in the U.S. and, considering the devices are nearly identical, it left owners of the Tab 8.9 wondering where their update was.
Good news, Tab 8.9 Wi-Fi owners: the wait is over. The 313.96MB update just started rolling out in the U.S. Read More
