Android Platform Distribution Updated: ICS Up To Almost 16%, Jelly Bean 0.8%

Google has again updated the current platform version numbers, and they show a reasonably good uptick in the usage of Android 4.0 variants. However, Google's new baby, Jelly Bean, is still bumping along at less than 1% even with all those Nexus 7 tablets.

Last time Android 4.0 was almost 11%, so those new devices and updates are definitely helping. Gingerbread was, and still is the majority of devices, but it's dropped a few points from roughly 64% to a touch over 60% now. As a reminder, Gingerbread is 20 months old now, and there's really no reason for it to still be so prevalent when ICS has had over half a year to build.

Sony Backpedals On Jelly Bean Plans For Its Xperia Devices, Still "Actively Investigating"

Recently, a Sony representative took to Facebook to announce the company's Jelly Bean plans for some of its Xperia devices. As it turns out, Sony wasn't too pleased with this move and has now backpedaled on everything the rep said, adding that it was still "actively investigating" Jelly Bean upgrade options. In the meantime, the rollout of Ice Cream Sandwich to Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones will continue as planned.

HTC EVO Design 4G Gets Bumped Up To Ice Cream Sandwich, Just Like Its Big Brother

Continuing the long string of updates being released today, the HTC EVO Design 4G, one of Sprint's mid-level EVO devices, is getting bumped up to Ice Cream Sandwich. The notes don't specify which version of Sense the device will be updated to. One might expect Sense 4.0, though we have seen some devices running Android 4.0, yet still carrying Sense 3.6. So, we'll see.

We had previously heard that both the EVO Design 4G and the EVO 3D would be on schedule to receive ICS by "early August," so it looks like Sprint is actually just a smidge ahead of schedule.

T-Mobile Is Already Planning A Minor OTA Update (LG3) To The Unreleased Galaxy Note

Well, that was fast. Just a few hours ago, we got official word that the Galaxy Note would be arriving on T-Mobile on August 8th. Now, we hear that as soon as the device launches, an OTA update will be available for the device. The update will ~~bring the device up to Android 4.0.3~~ add some new minor improvements. The device will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, but the tiny bump should still bring a few moderate improvements.

Regardless of the changes, if you're going to pick up a Galaxy Note, may as well make number one on your to-do list when you get it home to plug your shiny new device in to your computer and fire up Kies.

[Rumor] HTC Rezound May Be Getting Its ICS Upgrade As Early As July 29th

HTC Rezound owners may have a reason to get excited in the very, very near future. According to a leaked document, the Rezound may be seeing an update to Ice Cream Sandwich starting as soon as tomorrow, July 29th. The document says the OTA update should be about 292MB, so be sure to have your WiFi handy before you download.

As we mentioned before, there is a decent chance that the tip was fabricated. An update on a Sunday, "6/1" in the "available for pull" field, and inconsistent use of double digit dates are just some of the warning signs.

Of course, we are all waiting with bated breath for the arrival of Jelly Bean, but the more devices that break the 4.0 barrier, the better.

Lenovo Washes Its Hands Of The Ideapad K1, Offers Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich Update For Your Flashing Pleasure

So here's a novel idea: when a device reaches its end of life, manufacturers should provide users with a way to keep the flame burning. In a nutshell, that's what Lenovo has done with the Ideapad K1.

Here's the gist: the company is finished with this device. They no longer sell it, and it's clear that, past the most recent update (Android 3.2), they no longer plan to support it. So, they made a smart move: they built stock, unmodified Ice Cream Sandwich for the the K1, and released it to the public.

If you bought a pre-LTE Evo phone in the last year and you've been feeling left out in the cold, worry not. Sprint and HTC are in the process of bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to your device. If your device happens to be an Evo 3D or Evo Design, that is. The older flagship Evo and this year's midrange phone are slated to reach Android 4.0 sometime in August.

Yes, we know that once again, it's not Jelly Bean. Of course, Ice Cream Sandwich is a huge departure from Gingerbread and apparently it's not unusual for updates to take a while.

T-Mobile Galaxy S Blaze 4G Will Be Updated To ICS Some Time In The Future, No, It's Not Today's Update

We can easily forget some of the mid-range to lower-end devices in the flurry of news we have to keep up with. Thankfully, though, T-Mobile and Samsung haven't. At least not in the Blaze 4G's case. This device is currently in the process of receiving an update to Android 2.3.6. It was already running Gingerbread, so this isn't a huge update. What is big, however, is T-Mobile has announced that some time in the future, the device will see Ice Cream Sandwich.

Yes. It's annoying to hear that the companies are only now announcing plans for last year's OS, just after Jelly Bean was announced, but hey, this is a mid-range phone we're talking about, after all.
