Back in September, we heard that AT&T was rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich for the Samsung Captivate Glide. Well, it turns out, that was delayed. How long, you ask? Until tomorrow, it seems! According to a blog post by AT&T, the upgrade should be available starting November 10th via a download on Samsung's website. There will not be an OTA.

Android 4.0 simplifies common actions and includes a new typeface optimized for high-resolution screens to improve readability.

The many new features include the new browser with improved page loading, tabbed browsing, offline reading and desktop mode.  There are new lock/unlock features such as the ability to unlock directly to the camera, text messaging, phone dialer, or home screen, or you can use Face Unlock which lets you unlock your screen using facial recognition technology.

You can easily swipe away notifications with the new notifications bar and multitasking is easier with the new Recent Apps Shortcut that lets you switch between apps quickly.  There’s even a setting to help your track your data usage.

samsung-announces-the-galaxy-s-iii-mini-same-nature-inspired-design-in-a-4-display

It never rains, but it pours. Yesterday Samsung posted the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean source code for both new Galaxy Tab models and the AT&T Galaxy Note II. Today they're keeping the open source train rolling with the first available code for the new Galaxy S III Mini, the flagship model's 4-inch brother-from-another-mother. The 4.1 code is available now from Samsung's developer website.

If you're wondering why the GSIII Mini needs separate code from the standard Galaxy S III, remember that it's actually quite a different beast under the hood. Aside from the 4-inch 800x480 screen and other mid-range specs, it's running a 1Ghz dual-core STE U8420 processor, with completely different architecture from the Exynos chip in the international model and the Snapdragon powering the LTE version.

Taking a new approach to firmware upgrades, Panasonic has decided to update its Eluga handset to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich via a downloadable Play Store app appropriately named 'ELUGA ICS Update.'

For those who don't remember, the Eluga is a little-talked-about handset that debuted in Spring 2012 in Europe and Japan, touting a waterproof and dustproof chassis.

According to its description, Panasonic's update app "connects to Panasonic download server [sic] and downloads the Ice Cream Sandwich software update." Of course, many of us are familiar with what improvements Ice Cream Sandwich brings over Gingerbread 2.3.x, but Panasonic emphasizes the new "powerful new features" of its custom skin as well, listing the lock screen, status bar, home screen, and app drawer as areas of improvement with the update.

Ah, the poor LG Spectrum. Soon after it was released with mediocre Gingerbread-based software the Samsung Galaxy S III showed up to rain on LG's parade. Well, the Spectrum is getting a big update to Android 4.0.4 that should make owners much happier. Watch out, though. It clocks in at a whopping 384MB.

Many of the new features will be familiar to users of ICS on other devices, but some of it is part of LG's Android skin. Features include:

  • Customizable lock screen shortcuts
  • Customizable home screen launch bar
  • ICS system theme
  • ICS-style app drawer with widgets
  • ICS multitasking
  • ICS-style notifications
  • Quick settings in the notification panel
  • New power saving functionality
  • ICS data usage monitor
  • Verizon Remote Diagnostic Tool (if you're into that sort of thing)

Yes, Jelly Bean has been out for months, but this was not a terribly well-received phone.

Straight from the horse's mouth is always the best way to hear about updates, even if it's less-than-stellar news. Today, Sony confirmed its schedule for Jelly Bean updates on its line of phones. For starters, the recently-launched Xperia T and Xperia TX will be upgraded "from mid-Q1 2013." This will put the latest and greatest from Sony a solid six months behind Android 4.1's initial launch and, if our guess is correct, at least a few months behind the possible release of Android 4.2.

After that, the rest of Sony's 2012 lineup, including the Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will all be upgraded to Jelly Bean sometime next year.

Last Updated: October 11th, 2012

Soon after Motorola revised its software upgrade timeline, changing the original Atrix 4G's ICS ETA from Q3 2012 to a disheartening "further plans coming soon," a leaked Ice Cream Sandwich build has cropped up on XDA's forums. If you're the owner of an Atrix 4G and you're tired of waiting, there's good news - the leak, which carries an August build date, can be downloaded and installed on your device in just a few easy steps. Here's how it's done:

PantechUSA announced via Twitter this morning that its Burst budget phone will finally be receiving an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, in a little less than a week. Curiously, it won't be available over the air. Details haven't been released yet, but the update will be made available on the company's website here.

We should hear more about how the download will be doled out as the date gets closer and, hopefully, some more information on what the update will bring.

Smartphones are great; they organize our lives, provide us with news and information, and keep us in touch with friends no matter how far away they may be. Smartphone gloves on the other hand? Not so much. They don't do a great job of keeping your hands warm in the cold weather, and they aren't exactly renowned for their comfort.

Fortunately for Xperia sola users, Sony has you covered. The Ice Cream Sandwich update for the sola, which began today, includes a new feature called "glove mode" which, you guessed it, allows you to wear any pair of gloves and still use your smartphone.

Following the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia P last month, Sony is now rolling out the same software to the Xperia Go, Sola, and U.

The rollout for all three devices is beginning today and continuing over the next few weeks in global markets, so keep an eye on your notifications if you're eager to update your software.

As well as updating users' devices to Ice Cream Sandwich, this latest update also comes with new Sony media applications, including a new Walkman app.

Some of the cool features and functionality you can look forward to include:

  • New ways to experience your tunes, images, videos and films with Sony’s media applications – “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies”
  • Extended standby mode, increasing standby time by up to four times (depending on user-profile and data consumption)
  • Lock screen with improved functionality
  • Resizable widgets for improved personalization
  • Improved control of your mobile data consumption
  • Recent Apps button for a clear overview of your applications

In order to update your phone, you'll have to connect to a PC or Mac.

warp-sequent

We heard that the ZTE Warp Sequent was on its way to Boost Mobile a couple of weeks ago, and sure enough, it's now available to buy for $199.99.

The 4.3-inch phone packs a qHD display, and is powered by a 1.4GHz CPU with 768MB RAM. You'll be able to take photos and make video calls using the 1.3MP front facing camera, whilst the rear shooter allows you to capture 5MP shots.

Like the ZTE Warp, the Warp Sequent is running a vanilla build of Android, shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0).

The phone is available now, and you can purchase it directly from Boost Mobile, or from Amazon for the same price of $199.99.
