[IFA 2012] HTC Unveils The Desire X, An Uncompromising Yet 'Affordable' Mid-Range Phone

You may recognize this little guy from previous leaks of the so-called HTC Proto. The device looked very similar to the Desire V and, indeed, HTC's latest announcement is dubbed the Desire X. While it's no One X, the device does pack a dual-core Snapdragon S4. Unfortunately, it's not that one. This is the MSM8225 which still uses a 45nm architecture so it's not nearly as zippy as the S4 we all know and love from other, more high-end phones.

Images Surface Of Unnamed HTC Tablet, May Be Nothing More Than A Design Exercise

HTC has been sitting out the tablet game for a while now. After the monumental failure of the Flyer and the Jetstream, the Taiwanese manufacturer has kept its nose out of the slate market. If these images are to be believed, though, the company is at least considering new ideas. Some very strange ideas at that. The pictures show a tablet that has one abnormally large bezel area, while the three others are normal sized.

Recently Leaked HTC Proto Isn't A New Device At All - It's The Already-Released Desire V (With One Small Change)

Yesterday, we saw a leaked image of an HTC phone said to be internally called the "Proto." Thanks to an eagle-eyed reader, it was brought to our attention that this isn't a new device at all; it's a slightly more powerful version of the Desire V that's already been released in international markets.

Left: Proto leak; Right: Desire V (from HTC.com)

The only difference between the two? The Proto is said to sport a 1GHz dual-core processor, whereas the Desire V has a 1GHz single-core chip.

T-Mobile Officially Acknowledges Google Maps Reboot Bug, HTC And Google Said To Be Working On A Solution

Last week, after Google Maps received a public transit-minded update, it became apparent that the app wasn't playing nice with the HTC Rezound. Befuddled user reports spilled in, relaying tales of inexplicable reboots and crashes. As always, the community found a solution but, unfortunately, the only solution ended up being the "uninstall updates" button.

T-Mobile today acknowledged the Maps update's issues with certain handsets, posting a support document related to the HTC Sensation 4G's problems with the app.

HTC Proto Shows Up In Photos, Could Be A Successor To The HTC One V

Today, the Verge posted photos of what is supposedly known internally as the HTC Proto. Previous reports said that it would be a 4" device with a dual-core Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM and HSPA support. It's no beast by any means, but still a solid device for a low-end phone.

The device continues HTC's preference for capacitive buttons on the front. Unlike the One V, however, this phone does not appear to have the trademark "chin".

HTC One V Coming To Cricket Wireless On September 2nd - No Price Tag Yet

The junior member of HTC's One family has yet to see great adoption in the United States, with US Cellular and Virgin being the only carriers of note to offer the HTC One V. Fellow budget carrier Cricket Wireless is finally getting their own version of the Android handset, and will be releasing it to its contract-free customers on Sunday, September 2nd. Cricket has yet to announce a price for the phone, but given its competitors' prices, I'd guess that somewhere between $100 and $200 is likely.

[Leak] HTC Droid Incredible 2 Gets Its Own Ice Cream Sandwich ROM Based On Leaked RUU

It looks like another one of HTC's handsets (besides the Thunderbolt) has gotten a Sense-ified Ice Cream Sandwich ROM of its own – today, XDA user nitsuj17 posted a ROM for the Droid Incredible 2 (aka vivow) allegedly based on another leaked RUU from HTC. Readers may remember the Incredible 2 as being among devices officially slated by HTC to receive Ice Cream Sandwich "by the end of August," so this leak's timing isn't too hard to figure out.

Taiwan's Central Bank Wants The Government To Help HTC Out - That Doesn't Mean They're On The Brink Of Collapse

According to a Taiwanese newspaper, as reported by Fox Business, HTC was the subject of a recent plea by the head of the country's central bank. He urged the Taiwanese government to offer some sort of financial assistance to HTC, whose stock has dropped over 80% from its peak in Spring of 2011. While HTC is still profitable, the bank's governor points not only to HTC's dramatically waning share figures, but the impact of its slowed growth on Taiwan's net exports, which have fallen 11% year over year.

[Leak] HTC Thunderbolt Gets Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 ROM Thanks To Leaked RUU

Since hearing earlier this month that HTC's Desire S, Thunderbolt, and other select handsets would receive ICS updates "by the end of August," we have heard nary a peep from the Taiwanese manufacturer. Today though, thanks to an alleged leaked RUU, we have a stock Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 build for the Thunderbolt (aka Mecha).

According to Administrator's post at TeamBAMF's forums, the ROM, based on a leaked RUU (and carrying build number 7.00.605.2), is said to be fully functional and fully stock, but it's worth noting that the ROM is deodexed and rooted, meaning those wishing to retain root are in luck, but if you – for one reason or another – want a strictly stock, non-rooted experience, you'll have to wait.
