Based on a tweet by Cyanogen, the G2 isn't going to be sporting another rehash of the Snapdragon family of chipsets that has come to dominate HTC devices for the past 6 months.

You may remember back in November of 2009 (or maybe not, I didn't) that Qualcomm demoed an updated family of chipsets for mobile multimedia devices. The name of that chipset is the remarkably catchy MSM7X30 (really has a ring to it, no?), and it's bringing a little more to the table than its predecessors.

We already knew the G2 would be shipping with HSPA+ connectivity (the first phone to have it), but that's only one of the goodies Qualcomm's upgraded chipset will be offering:

  • 720P video encoding (recording) and decoding at 30FPS
  • Integrated 2D/3D GPU's with OpenGL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 API support
  • 5.1 surround sound output
  • Up to 12 megapixel camera support
  • Integrated GPS
  • Support for processor speeds between 800MHz and 1GHz (Scorpion CPU's, same as Snapdragon's)

All of this considered, the G2's spec sheet could really cause some heads to explode.

Just like the title says: some real, live shots of the T-Mobile G2 out in the real world have landed in Engadget’s lap. Based on the photos, it looks like the earlier leaked renders were pretty accurate, albeit the colors were off. It’s not a bad looking piece of kit, though it is does look a bit utilitarian. In fact, it looks like what I’d imagine the Nexus Two to look like.

It’ll be sporting a 3.7” screen and a full four-row slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Unlike the G1, the entire body of the G2 slides up rather than just the screen portion - an improvement, in my opinion.

T-Mobile certainly dropped a big hint when the word “Vanguard,” believed to be the codename for the HTC Vision, was discovered all over the source code of their HSPA+ phone teaser page. But, according to a leak from Android Central, this phone might not be the slider we’ve seen before – it could be the next model in the myTouch line.

Called the myTouch 3G HD, the phone appears to have the same button layout as the myTouch 3G Slide, including the Genius Button and trackpad. The screen size can’t be determined, but certainly looks like more than T-Mobile’s previous myTouch offerings.

Boy Genius Report is claiming today that T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network is expanding into 19 more metropolitan areas throughout the United States on July 21st. The full list:

    • Austin, TX
    • Baltimore, MD
    • Birmingham, AL
    • Cincinnati, OH
    • Cleveland, OH
    • Columbus, OH
    • El Paso, TX
    • Ft. Worth, TX
    • Hawaii, HI
    • Indianapolis, IN
    • Jacksonville, FL
    • Kansas City, MO
    • Louisville, KY
    • Milwaukee, WI
    • Minneapolis, MN
    • Portland, OR
    • San Antonio, TX
    • Washington, D.C.
    • Wichita, KS

T-Mobile is certainly trying to get the jump on Verizon and AT&T’s soon-to-exist LTE networks. Their strategy is clearly focused on the establishment of HSPA+ in urban areas, rather than creating “blanketed” regions of service.

T-Mobile announced today that 25 new markets are coming online for their “3G” HSPA+ network. Seems like no biggie, right - the other 3 big dogs (Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint) all know that 3G is so 2008.

Wrong. This isn’t any old 3G network – current tests show speeds anywhere from the same as, to 4 times faster than, WiMax – and T-Mobile’s only rocking HSPA+ 21 Mbps. HSPA+ has recently been demonstrated at speeds of 84 Mbps. For comparison, my home DSL runs at 1.5 Mbps (yea – the 4G on my phone is faster than that). Not only that, but those 4G speed tests were conducted before any 4G phones were released by Sprint, meaning now that a 4G phone is available, speeds will likely drop as devices bombard the limited number of towers for data (in comparison, the HSPA+ speed tests were run on an active, normal T-Mobile network).
