motorola-xoom2-600x388

The Motorola XOOM was a truly unique device: it marked the beginning of the Android tablet era, stole a portion (admittedly a very small one) of the iPad 2's pre-announcement hype, and... weighed about as much as a tank driven by Chris Christie.

Well now its successor, the XOOM 2, has begun to hit the rumor mill - just a few minutes ago, Droid Life leaked two pictures of the slate:

We don't have a ton of information on the device as of yet, but DL's "sources" say that its weight is similar to that of the XOOM (!), and it has "big physical flush" buttons on its back, HDMI and microUSB ports on its bottom, and a SIM card slot.

Out of all the giveaway/contests we do here at AP, my favorites always end up being the creative kinds because they always leave us with long-lasting memories and give a chance to truly talented people who put in work into their entries. Such were the photo, the Twitter design, t-shirt design, and most recently the 404 page design giveaways (the last one being my favorite).

The Contest

It's now time to launch another creative giveaway because 1) everyone likes free stuff and 2) we need banners.

Good banners. Creative banners. Banners we won't be embarrassed to give our partners and fans to put on their sites.

I'm a huge fan of 2 community news sites - Reddit and the more technical/nerdy Hacker News by YCombinator. The former has a few tablet apps but Android users haven't had as much luck with Hacker News apps for tablets. The website, while fast and looking just fine in the browser, is far from optimal for those using a touch interface with its tiny links to discussions and buttons.

Enter the new HackNewsBot app by Jason Ostrander, designed specifically for Honeycomb tablets.

We have the independently scrolling list of stories on the left which can be toggled on and off to make room for the browser on the right.

We've covered a few different football-related apps lately, and for the football fanatics among you, the NFL released an official app specifically designed for Honeycomb tablets into the Market just a little while ago.

The app allows you to watch on-demand NFL network news and other info, check out the latest on your favorite teams, keep up with game action, stats, and drive charts; and check out team rosters, stats, and player info, all while looking mighty good doing it.

The app makes good use of the screen real estate offered by Honeycomb tablets, and is definitely a must-have for all the NFL fan out there.

Update 9/2/11: Aaand now with the latest 0.4.2.36 update, Honeycomb support is official.

A short while ago, the Google Voice app received an update that brought about a few bug fixes. Almost immediately we began hearing rumors that a Honeycomb interface may have been incorporated into this build. A quick search of the Market revealed that it's not officially supported just yet, so I pulled the apk from my phone and sideloaded it onto my Tab 10.1. Here is the result:

As you can see, the settings menu moved from its previous location in the navbar to the upper right-hand corner -- the typical place for the settings menu of Honeycomb-optimized apps.
