Street View

Google has collaborated with the nonprofit Historypin to create an interactive map containing images and videos highlighting the neighborhoods devastated by Hurricane Sandy. The project is entitled Hurricane Sandy: Record, Remember, Rebuild and has used over 300 contributions thus far. The map stretches from New York down to North Carolina and includes pictures of areas before, during, and after the hurricane struck.

While it's not exactly a groundbreaking event when new locations get Street View, today Google also revealed images of the 9/11 Memorial and New York City's Central Park. Google Maps users can get a ground-level view of the tribute located at the site of the World Trade Center, and the panoramic images are detailed enough to display victims' names engraved along the edges of the North and South pools.

Historypin is a great new app that aims to help you with these things by way of photograph. Using geolocation, it allows you to browse through thousands of images and stories relevant to where you're at in the world, as well as overlay the classic image on a modern backdrop in augmented reality fashion.

You can also include your own piece of history by uploading your own photos, or digitizing an old photo directly from within the app.
