Google Phone 9.0 prepares to add Android O's Notification Channels, picture messaging, post-call messages, and more [APK Teardown]

Late last week, an update to Google's Phone app began rolling out with no immediately obvious changes to the experience. While users don't have anything to play with quite yet, there are several interesting hints about what is to come in future releases. Hidden among the app's resources are signs of support for Android O's new Notification Channels feature, in-call picture messaging, post-call messaging, hidden menu codes for Motorola phones, and even some odd images of paws. Yes, seriously.

Official changelog posted

Google posted a changelog for the Phone app's latest update with the addition of emergency location display and "call waiting improvements" making up the majority of the new features.

Tip: Switch To The Stock 4.2 Launcher On Your Transformer Pad Infinity With This Simple Trick

When the official 4.2 update started rolling out to the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity, one of the things I was most looking forward to was switching to the updated launcher. Unfortunately, ASUS decided to omit this option, which happens to be readily available on the TF300 with 4.2. Feeling disappointed and sad, I turned the TF700 off and set it to the side.

Thanks to a comment left on our TF700 Jelly Bean ROM download post from earlier today, my spirits were once again lifted. Turns out there's actually a very simple way to enable the new launcher, ASUS just decided to leave the option out of the standard settings menu.

Tip: BeyondPod Podcast Manager Has A Hidden Menu With Tons Of Settings - Here's How To Access It

We already know that TeslaCoil loves to throw secret menus into its apps like Nova and WidgetLocker, but it turns out they're not the only developers using this sort of hidden functionality. Popular podcatching app BeyondPod also has a hidden menu, and it's chock-full of useful features.

First things first - how do you access this super top-secret place of magic? Pretty easily, actually. Start up BeyondPod, and hit the menu button > More... > About BeyondPod; from there, just tap and hold the BeyondPod version label for 1-2 seconds. The Advanced Settings will appear just below (first screenshot).

Tip: Using WidgetLocker? It Has A Secret 'Experimental' Settings Menu, Too

Yesterday, we highlighted the hidden "labs" feature in Nova Launcher. Turns out that's not the only of TeslaCoil's apps with a secret menu - popular lockscreen replacement app WidgetLocker has a similar feature, except it's called "experimental." For all intents and purposes, though, it's the same thing.

It's also activated the same way: simply head into WL's settings menu and hold volume down for 1-2 seconds. Just like with Nova, you'll see a toast notification to let you know that the new menu was successfully unlocked. To disable it, hold volume up for 1-2 seconds. Easy peasy.

Inside this hidden area, you'll find some pretty neat features, many of which are in place to reduce the likelihood of the stock lockscreen showing up instead of WidgetLocker's custom interface.

Tip: Access The Secret 'Labs' Menu In Nova Launcher For Even More Customization Options

Since Nova Prime made its way into the final day of Google's 25 Billion promo, we thought this might be a good time to share a lesser known feature of the custom launcher. Much like many Google apps/services, Nova has a "labs" menu that makes available some useful tweaks which aren't quite ready for prime time (get it?).

Within this hidden menu, you'll find things like the ability to increase the maximum grid size (from 7x7 to 16x16), toggles to add any size widget to the dock, force 180 degree orientation, UI Lock, and a couple of widget restore and resize options.
