[New App] GTVHacker Releases Asus Cube Google TV Root App On The Play Store: Roots, Patches, Modifies Flash Player

The fine folks at GTVHacker dropped us a line to say that their new Asus Cube root solution is now available as a free download in the Google Play Store. The cleverly-titled CubeRoot takes advantage of a Unix NFS mounting exploit to install the SuperSU application and grant Cube owners root privileges, sure to be much appreciated by Google TV power users excited for Asus' new hardware. You can pick up the root application from the Play Store widget below, or download it directly from GTVHacker's website.

In addition to basic rooting duties, CubeRoot will modify the Cube's Flash Player app, allowing users to get around some arbitrary platform-content restrictions in video websites.

Google To Make “Big Announcements” About GTV On February 13th

Though some would have you believe Google TV has long been a dead horse, it seems Mountain View hasn’t given up hope just yet: just about a month after a handful of CES announcements, the company put up a Facebook message promising the following:

There’s obviously no way to discern for sure what these “big announcements” might be, but as The Verge says, it’s possible they could entail the yearly GTV update or (more excitingly) a Google-branded device (Nexus TV, anyone?). Either way, we’ll be keeping you updated on the news – good or bad – as it comes in, so keep it locked right here on AP!

[CES 2012] Sony Introduces Google TV Set-Top Box, Blu-Ray Player

Seems Sony’s making good on its promise to keep churning out Google TV devices – in fact, the company just introduced not one, but two such gadgets.

As of now, we don’t have tech specs for either of the duo, but what we do know is what you see above: both the NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray player (on the left) and the NSZ-GS7 set-top box (on the right) look splendid, and both have seriously overcomplicated names. Additionally, from the looks of it, they’ll support 3D TVs, so if you’re ~~rich~~ lucky enough to have one, I suppose that’s good news. Finally, they’ll both feature gesture and voice control, in addition to the usual Google apps and the following keyboard:

Update: According to The Verge, the keyboard is backlit and features – get this – a three-axis motion sensor that should be perfect for gaming.

Happy New Year! A new year means it's time for the annual Android prediction post. First off though, a trip down memory lane with a look at Aaron's post from last year.

A Look Back To 2011

Way back in January 2011, we were all gobsmacked at the recent announcement of 300,000 Android activations per day. That looks cute now, doesn't it? A year later and it's more than doubled, now we're up to 700,000 per day. That's just incredible. Android could hit a million activations per day by the end of the year.

Samsung Shows Off Two Google TV Boxes, Calls Them An "Experiment"

Google TV has met a lot of troubles on its quest to popularize Internet-connected TVs, not the least of which has been several lackluster reviews. So it isn't surprising that manufacturers have either ditched plans to develop their own Google TV products or at least held off on announcing them until after CES. Samsung, however, has decided to show off two of their own boxes running the software, though they aren't throwing their support behind the platform just yet.

The two boxes - one a stand-alone set top box (similar to Logitech's Revue) and the other a Blu-Ray player - are not even close to their final form, and neither even had a controller yet.

Sony Opens Android Developer Registration For Sony Internet TVs

Things are really coming along in the Google TV world, aren't they? First, a survey by Appcelerator showed that developers were showing strong interest in Google TV. A few days later, Google revealed that major players in the entertainment industry were backing GTV in a big way - and also gave us a short preview.

Fast forward to today, and Sony has opened up registration for its Android Developer Site. Thus far, there doesn't seem to be much to it - but they promise that there will be "... exciting news for the Sony Internet TV very soon," and "In the future, look for more extras such as images, examples, tips and techniques to help you create exciting new applications."

As mentioned above, the big players already back GTV - but that's only half the equation.

Google Announces Boatload Of New Partners For Google TV

According to Google’s announcement today, it seems that content providers really, really like the idea of Google TV – which is a good sign, as content can often make or break new platforms. Specifically, Google say they've "been overwhelmed by interest from partners on how they can use the Google TV platform." And by "partners," they mean a fairly significant number of big players:

Turner Broadcasting has been hard at work optimizing some of their most popular websites for viewing on Google TV, including TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, available anytime through Google TV.

NBC Universal has collaborated with Google TV to bring CNBC Real-Time, an application that allows you to track your favorite stocks and access news feeds while enjoying the best financial news from CNBC directly on the TV screen.
