If you can't find your GoPro app, that's because it's now called Quik
The app gets a complete rebrand, UI refresh, and some new features from the formerly separate video editor
If you're looking for the GoPro app on your phone and having trouble finding it, try peeking under Q. As of today, the official GoPro video management and editing app is renamed Quik, which was previously what the company called its new version of the Replay video editor. The old Quik app listing is gone, its functionality folded into the new omnibus app.
Leaked GoPro Hero9 renders appear to confirm new front-facing color screen
Vloggers will no longer need to buy an additional accessory
GoPro has long been the go-to for action cams, but previous models in the Hero line have required an additional front display mod if you want to see yourself while you film. With the upcoming Hero9, it looks as though that's about to change. Leaked renders show what resembles a full-color front-facing display in place of the usual black and white status screen.
In the span of a few years, Insta360 has made itself a name in the 360 camera space thanks to an excellent balance between specs, image and video quality, funky additional features, and price. After a small detour with the Insta360 GO, the company is now back with its most ambitious 360 and action cam to date, the One R.
Action camera maker GoPro is putting up two new products for the 2019 holiday season — another iteration in its HERO series and its first 360° camera since the rather forgettable Fusion. The Hero8 Black packs in big technical improvements up over the Hero7 Black while the new MAX brings two cameras and spherical views to rough-and-tumble scenes.
We didn't have one of these lists to share on Monday — it was a slow weekend — but we're back with all manner of tech deals. Today we've got crazy cheap smart TVs, Sennheiser earbuds, a Bluetooth bathroom scale, and then some.
Winter sucks for shopping. At least, it does if you're doing it in the traditional sense: driving out in the snow, fighting for parking, and watching the sun set before you're even half done. It's enough to drive someone to ditch the brick-and-mortar life and commit to an online retail existence. As luck would have it, we've spotted a bunch of good deals from some of our favorite online stores, ready to save you a buck or two on mobile tech.
If you're thinking about an action camera, you've probably thought about GoPro — the brand is practically synonymous with the product category. One of its best cams, the Hero6 Black, is currently the lowest we've ever seen it at B&H, at just 9.
Daredevils open your wallets: GoPro announced three new cameras on Thursday with the Hero7 line. With a price range of $200 - $400, GoPro’s Hero7 line provides power and performance updates over the previous Hero6 lineup. The flagship Hero7 Black is distinguished visually as the only model featuring a front-facing LCD screen. In addition to the information screen on the front, the Hero7 Black ushers in several firsts for GoPro:
Facebook's F8 developer conference is underway in San Jose right now, and that means lots of new announcements about many of the company's products. It's funny to think the $1 billion acquisition of Instagram in 2012 was actually met with huge skepticism. The photo sharing app seems to have gone from strength to strength and has come out of the recent Facebook scandals largely unscathed.
Xiaomi is probably recognizable among our readers for its phones, and maybe even for its earbud headphones. But I doubt many of us think of cameras when we think of the 5th largest smartphone manufacturer. That said, someday we might. According to Bloomberg, Xiaomi is considering making an offer on GoPro.
GoPro has been on a steady downward slope for the past few years, at least as far as profits go. The company laid off 100 workers in January 2016 in response to weak sales. This continued in November 2016 with another 200 layoffs, followed by 270 more the following March. The situation doesn't seem to be improving, so GoPro is leaving the drone market entirely, and cutting more jobs in the process.
Drones are a lot of fun, but they can also be pricey. To help alleviate that second part, Amazon is offering the GoPro Karma with either the HERO5 Black for $899 or the HERO6 Black for $999. That's a solid $200 off each bundle. The Karma is a smaller, lightweight drone. It uses a 'Karma Stabilizer' in conjunction with whichever HERO camera you choose to produce smooth footage. It's controlled by a video game-esque controller with a touchscreen. All this comes with a carrying case so that you can bring the Karma anywhere. If you'd like the Karma alone (you'll have to have your own GoPro camera already), it's $799. Add the HERO5 Black, and that price becomes $899. Opt for the newer HERO6 Black, and it's $999. Do note that the listings do come with batteries in spite of the stupid 'Drone without battery' option name; that's referring to a second, additional battery. But if you do want an additional battery with either listing, you can add one for an extra $99. Prime shipping is free. Hit the source links below to grab a Karma of your very own.Source: Amazon (Karma w/ HERO5), (Karma w/ HERO6)
GoPro cameras are designed to go wherever you go, shooting video the whole time. That can mean a lot of video, and editing video can be a pain. The latest version of the GoPro app has something to ease the burden; it's called QuikStory. You press a button and the app spits out a compilation of your clips, ready for sharing.
Back in March, Samsung announced the successor to its popular Gear 360 action camera. The GoPro competitor won many fans with its ability to record video in 360 degrees via two fisheye lenses. The 2nd generation version promises more of the same, but with 4K video recording plus a smaller, lighter frame. Samsung has now released the device in the US and it's available for $229.The original Gear 360 was hamstrung somewhat by the fact that it could only be used in conjunction with a Samsung Galaxy phone, and this new model seems to carry mostly the same limitations. Curiously, the camera will be compatible with some iOS devices, but it still won't work with any other Android phones. The new companion app surfaced last month, for anyone who wants to download it in advance. It will allow you to operate the camera remotely, as well as edit and share the videos it creates.Samsung also brought attention to an interesting deal for Galaxy S8 and S8+ owners. Anyone who purchased either phone between May 25 and June 19 will be able to grab a new Gear 360 for a special price of $49. Considering the list price of $229, that's an impressive $180 saving. It will be a limited time offer while stocks last so you'll need to get in quick. As of today, you'll be able to pick up the Gear 360 from the following stores and sites: Best Buy and BestBuy.com, Amazon.com, Adorama, B&H, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and U.S. Cellular, Samsung.com and through the ShopSamsung app.[EMBED_YT]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXAZLLnmF5U[/EMBED_YT]Source: Samsung
Back in 2015 at I/O, and just after announcing Cardboard, Google rolled out Jump. At the time the hardware that accompanied it was the GoPro Odyssey, a big circular contraption containing 16 GoPro cameras. It was meant to make recording in 360 degrees for VR purposes a bit easier, both logistically and in terms of the tools and software needed. Don't be too surprised if that flew under your radar at the time; there hasn't been much in the way of news from Google about Jump since then (though there was a cool WebVR film announced a few days ago that used it). It seems that the platform has come due for a hardware upgrade, though, as today Google has announced the YI HALO as well as a new Jump Start program for free access to the cameras and software.
A few weeks ago I wrote a preview article introducing the Yi 4K action camera. The upstart Chinese company has boldly promised that their top of the line $249 action cam can outperform the GoPro Hero4 Black (the Hero5 Black had yet to be announced when I began testing) which sells for $100-150 more. That's a pretty bold statement considering that GoPro is a name synonymous with action cams, so much so that many people call any action camera a GoPro. I've spent the last few weeks testing that claim, and you know what, the Yi 4K is not as good as a GoPro Hero4 Black. It's better.
Few would argue that GoPro is the king of the action camera world. It's the brand of choice for professional film crews and amateur enthusiasts alike and dominates the competition in terms of market share and brand recognition. GoPro's current flagship model, the HERO4 Black, is touted by many as the best action cam on the market.A couple of weeks ago, GeekBuying.com asked if I would be interested in reviewing a new GoPro competitor, the YI 4K Action Camera. They claim that it matches or beats the GoPro HERO4 Black in almost every way for just a little more than half the price ($250 vs $449). I was pretty skeptical of this claim, but after reading a few reviews, checking out the specs, and watching some comparison videos online, I have to say, the camera looks pretty legit. Here are a few of the more notable features the YI 4k sports:
GoPro acquired iOS video editing apps Replay and Splice at the beginning of March and was quick to develop an Android version of Replay, which it renamed Quik and released as a beta a couple of months ago. Now the app is shedding the beta tag and getting its first official public release for everyone on the Play Store.
GoPro promised it would bring the popular video editing app Replay to Android when it acquired the developer a few weeks ago, and it's here already. However, it's only available in beta, and it's not called Replay anymore. Say hello to GoPro Quik. The app must have been pretty much ready to go because there's still some Replay branding in the screenshots.
