You've gotta hand it to the folks in Mountain View. When NORAD decides to pass Google over for Santa tracking data, the company isn't one to sit on its hands and let someone else handle Christmas. This isn't the first year that the data giant has kept you up to date on the comings and goings of everyone's favorite fat bearded man in a red suit, but this Santa tracker may just be the best yet.

The Google Voice app received an update today that is sure to make frequent GV users quite happy: voicemail integration in the dialer for Android 4.0 devices. Gone are the days of hopping on the computer or launching the GVoice app to listen to your voicemail, as it's now integrated directly into the ICS dialer, much like we saw at the Android 4.0 announcement back in October.

The update also brings quick access to all folders directly from the inbox.

Google Voice received its first major update in some time earlier today, undergoing a major UI refresh for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices (Gingerbread devices only see minor changes, such as the app icon), as well as new interface for Honeycomb and ICS tablets. Under the hood, SMS offline message queuing is now supported and works for multiple recipients.

Unfortunately, it still is ungodly slow to load on my Gingerbread phone, and scrolls like something from Android 1.6.

While the Google Voice app has always been free, there was speculation that voice calls to the United States and Canada would begin to cost you money at the beginning of next year. However, new Google Voice users are being greeted by a pop-up window when they first use the Call Phone feature in Gmail that indicates otherwise.

See there? Calls to the U.S. and Canada are free in 2012. If there is anything I love more than free voice calling, it's another year of entirely free calling through Google Voice.

Fresh Google Voice update! GV got bumped to 0.4.2.38, and some of the most requested features are finally hitting Google Voice. Let's get to it:

  • Voicemail Prefetch will automatically download your voicemails as soon as they are available, so you can listen to them when you have no data coverage.
  • Group Messaging will let you spam all your friends at once with the same message, just comma separate numbers or names in the "To:" box.

What? Google Voice is getting a feature update? People still work on Google Voice?

Update: Well, it's official. Just like suspected, it's currently only working for Sprint customers, and text to email forwarding must be enabled. Not to worry, though, El Goog is working on incorporating this feature into the Voice inbox.

They're also working with other wireless carriers to enable the feature for all Voice users as soon as they can, so just sit tight if you're not on the Now Network -- shouldn't be too long.

Finally! After being limited to US users for the past 2 years, it looks like Google Voice may finally be opening up to the rest of the world. The Next Web has been informed by Jens Redmer, Google's European Director of Business Development, that "Google is currently 'dogfooding' its telephony service Google Voice in Europe ahead of a planned launch outside the US".

Google Voice is a telecommunications and VoIP service developed by Google that allows users (until now limited to residents in the US) to make domestic and international calls from their mobile phone, the Android and iPhone app, the web app, and/or by dialling their personal Google Voice number.

A little over a year ago Google introduced Voice Actions, which allowed Android users to perform a variety of tasks by simply issuing voice commands. Unfortunately, to the chagrin of non-English speakers, the app was only available in US English. Today Google is updating Voice Actions for users in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain with support for British English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.

To use Voice Actions simply say one of the following commands (spoken in any of the aforementioned languages):

  • send text to [contact] [message]
  • call [business]
  • call [contact]
  • go to [website]
  • navigate to [location/business name]
  • directions to [location/business name]
  • map of [location]

It is also possible to perform standard Google searches with Voice Actions.

Update 9/2/11: Aaand now with the latest 0.4.2.36 update, Honeycomb support is official.

A short while ago, the Google Voice app received an update that brought about a few bug fixes. Almost immediately we began hearing rumors that a Honeycomb interface may have been incorporated into this build. A quick search of the Market revealed that it's not officially supported just yet, so I pulled the apk from my phone and sideloaded it onto my Tab 10.1.

The Google Voice app for Android, which I've been using as my primary voicemail provider after gladly abandoning Sprint's own visual voicemail, saw its first update in many months today, which, among other things, finally fixed the most annoying bug that's been plaguing it for as long as I can remember.

The bug I am talking about is, of course, having to click the Play button a second time after you've already clicked it once (the voicemail would stop playing 0-2 seconds into the call requiring this second press).
