Eric Schmidt Claims Google TV Will Somehow Be On "The Majority" Of Televisions Sold By Summer 2012

So Eric Schmidt recently gave an interview at LeWeb 2011. In the middle of a conversation mostly about world governments and democracy, he dropped a bomb about the future of Google TV.

by the summer of 2012 .... the majority of the televisions that you see in the television stores here will have Google TV embedded in it

You read that right, Eric Schmidt expects Google TV to somehow end up on 50%+ of televisions sold in the next 6 months. Google TV is probably hovering around 0% of televisions sold today.

There were almost no details given on just how he expects Google to accomplish this, he only mentioned "a similar strategy to what we did with Android, the price is free." That's great and all, but Google TV isn't "free" to the consumer, you need a beefier CPU, memory, and storage to run the OS, all of which increase the price of the TV.

Official: Android 3.1 Update Now Rolling Out To The Logitech Revue

We learned a few weeks ago that a software update would soon be rolling out to the Logitech Revue, finally bringing Honeycomb to the unit. That time has finally come; as posted on the official Logitech blog, the Android 3.1 update is now making its way to Revue units across the country.

Android 3.1 brings a lot of welcome features and enhancements to the Google TV box, including access to the Android Market, improved search and browsing capabilities, a simplified user interface, and improvements to the Logitech Media Player.

To receive the update, you need only ensure that your Revue is on and connected to the web - the update will be rolling out throughout the week, and you'll be prompted to install it once it's available on your device.

[Rumor] LG Poised To Debut Google TV At CES In January

Following a statement of distaste for Google TV (at least in its present form) from Logitech's CEO Guerrino De Luca, an intriguing rumor has sprung up that perhaps Korean manufacturer LG is set to try their hand at Google TV, debuting a GTV-enabled set at CES next January. Bloomberg cites "two people with knowledge of the project" as sources for this information, maintaining the informants' anonymity by request.

LG, as the world's second largest television manufacturer, could prove to be a hugely important ally for Google in bringing Google TV to a level of success that will ensure its continued competition with other companies seeking to be the ultimate solution in combining internet and television (ahem, Apple).

Google: Software Update Coming To Logitech Revue In The "Next Few Weeks"

Logitech may have said that launching the Revue was "a mistake of implementation of gigantic nature" and that it has chosen to ditch Google TV entirely, but it has, thankfully, decided against reneging on its promise of one more software update. And, yes, said software update is exactly the one that was shown to us back at the end of October: the one that brings an updated, usable interface and - drumroll please - Android Market integration.

Logitech Ditching Google TV, CEO Calls Revue Launch “A Mistake Of Implementation Of A Gigantic Nature”

Guerrino De Luca, CEO of Logitech, while speaking at the company’s Analyst and Investor Day yesterday, plainly delivered a statement that many of us could have seen coming, calling Logitech’s 2010 launch of the Revue set top box “a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature.” Further, De Luca made it clear that Logitech had “brought closure to the Logitech Revue saga,” and plans to let inventory run out this quarter, with no sequel in the works for the manufacturer’s first Google TV box.

De Luca confided that “operational miscues in EMEA” cost the company over $100M, and ascribed much of Logitech’s headache to executing “a full scale launch with a beta product,” implying that Google TV, as a product, was not – and perhaps is not – established or complete enough to make a launch on the scale of the Revue reasonable.

  • Improved search options for LiveTV, Netflix, YouTUbe, HBO GO, and more. A new TV & Movies app lets you browse through over 80,000 movies and shows.
  • Improved YouTube experience built specifically for GoogleTV. YouTube is now more integrated into GT search, allowing you to easily find nearly anything you want even faster.
  • Apps! The Android Market will be included in the update, although apps that require touch interaction or telephony won't be available (for obvious reasons).

Google TV SDK Goes Final, Start Coding!

Hey GTV fans: Fantastic news! The final version of the Google TV SDK went live today - Google TV is still alive! This is a follow up to the preview build released in August.

Apparently, the differences between this and the preview version are pretty minor: by popular demand, the Action Bar now renders horizontally (like tablets), and there are additional on-screen quick access keys, like picture-in-picture, fast forward, and channel buttons.

The finalization of the SDK means it's time for developers to really get cracking. So fire up your Linux box, grab the add-on from the SDK Manager, and get to work!

Eric Schmidt: Google TV Launching In Europe 'Early Next Year'

Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt delivered the MacTaggart keynote lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival last Friday - the first time a non-TV exec has been invited to do so. In his address, Schmidt indicated the UK as being "among the top priorities" in Google TV's European launch next year.

Google TV experienced a rough beginning, facing suspicion - and blocking - from some of the top broadcasting networks in the US. The platform initially faced criticism because some broadcasters felt that Google was "stealing their advertising revenues without contributing to the cost of making programs," Reuters reports.

Schmidt looked to dispel suspicions in his address, pointing out that Google seeks to "support the content industry by providing an open platform for the next generation of television to evolve, the same way Android is an open platform for the next generation of mobile."

There is no word yet on who will manufacture Google TV boxes for the European market, but Reuters speculates that Google's recent purchase of Motorola may or may not point to a future interest in manufacturing the boxes.

Google TV To Be Added To The Next Update of The Android SDK; Developers, Start Your Engines!

Google TV users will be happy to know that support for the platform is finally coming soon to the Android SDK. This will allow developers to unleash their apps on all Google TVs on the market, which in turn could help manufacturers eventually push more units given the renewed interest.

Since the Google TV Market announcement at Google I/O, the platform has had a lot of road bumps in both TV network and user adoption. However, since the SDK update will provide new APIs (such as channel line-ups),developers will have a wider array of tools to use while crafting applications.
