Play Newsstand v3.4 Adds Home Screen Shortcuts To News Sources And Topics [APK Download]

We know everybody is looking forward to the big Hangouts 4.0 update; and despite a pretty active day for updates, there's no sign that the big green chat app is going to get a big new version today. While we're waiting, a smallish update to the Google Play Newsstand app reminds us that there's plenty of stuff to read in the news. The changes in this release are mostly centered around improving performance and accessibility, and fixing bugs. However, there is one potentially handy new feature making an appearance: home screen shortcuts.

This is the semi-official changelog:

Google Play Newsstand Update Adds A Few More Material Design User Interface Tweaks [APK Download]

If you're as frustrated at Google's somewhat inconsistent implementation of the new Material Design user interface as our own Liam Spradlin, you'll be happy to see the latest small change to the Google Play Newsstand app. Newsstand got its major Material re-design early last month, but version 3.3.1 adds a few more tweaks to the UI. This demonstrates that Google intends to keep working on Material Design in general and its look in individual apps in particular.

Before we go any further: as far as we can tell, this is a purely visual refresh, and version 3.3.1 of Newsstand doesn't contain any notable new feature additions.

[APK Download] Google Play Newsstand Gets A Material Makeover, Improved Magazine Interface On Phones, And More

It's hard to believe that it's been nearly a year since Google rebranded Play Magazines to Newsstand, essentially combining Magazines and Currents into one app. While we've seen updates come and go to Newsstand over the months, today's update marks the biggest one yet: a complete makeover.

According to the Android Blog, Newsstand is now using Material Design, which incorporates "larger images, more contextual headers, and smoother transitions" into the overall feel of the app. Users are also able to swipe horizontally between topics, as well as vertically to get more info on a particular topic. So, really, it's more intuitive.

Paid Google Play Newsstand Content Comes To France And Germany

The Google Play Newsstand Android app is pretty and all, but without the ability to subscribe to magazines, it's little more than a dumbed down pseudo-RSS reader. So it's a pretty good thing Google is rolling out access to the digital magazines to more countries. By now, residents in France and Germany should have access to the Newsstand content available in Google Play.

Paid Google Play Newsstand Content Now Live In Italy

When Google released Newsstand, it married content from Currents and Magazines. This brought stories from around the web, along with paid magazine and newspaper subscriptions to one place. The problem, however, is that paid content isn't yet available 'round the world.

Today marks the arrival of paid content to the Newstand app in Italy, making it the fifth country to get support for the service. Both the application and Newsstand homepage appear to have been updated for Italian users, and there's also a promotional page to help users find new content to purchase.

Google Play Newsstand 3.1 Adds Widget, Mini Cards, And Translation Options [APK Download]

Newsstand is one of the younger apps in Google's portfolio, but today it's getting a significant update to version 3.1. The biggest change - and a welcome one for at-a-glance newshounds - is a brand-spanking new widget. It's a pretty basic 4X3 affair - the widget will display a single story at a time, complete with headline and embedded image. Tap the arrow button to advance to the next headline, or anywhere else to go directly to the story in Newsstand.

Inside the app itself, you'll find that the interface has been given a little spit and polish, including the new standard slide-out menu design, which is where the primary link to the Settings page and the Help menu are now hiding.

[APK Teardown] Play Store 4.4 Suggests Google Is Getting Ready To Release Google Play Newsstand

Earlier this week, we posted the first look at the upcoming Android Play Store app v4.4. As it turns out, besides sporting a new look and a secret message to the teardown team, the updated Play Store is strongly hinting at another new arrival - one we've been waiting for since March. And now we have the updated name for it - Google Play Newsstand.

March 2013: Google Play News

But first, allow me to refresh your memory. Back in March of this year, we got a tip about several interesting bits of Javascript and CSS code inside the web version of the Play Store.
