Update: It looks like many users are having issues with the update, so we have written a new post specifically to address and discuss them.

Sprint's LG Optimus S may be a budget Android device, but apparently that isn't going to stop Sprint and LG from providing Android updates going forward. Today, Sprint announced via its Community Forums that an update to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is rolling out to some devices beginning today, with all devices being updated within 10 days.

The official enhancements/fixes list:

LG Optimus S Software Update - Android 2.3 (LS670ZVH)

Enhancements/Fixes:

- Volume adjustment from handset when backlight is off and in a Bluetooth call

- Initiation of a 3-way call in certain markets

- Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)

  - Updated color scheme (includesdarker notification bar and black-based menus)

  - New on-screen keyboard (supports multi-touch input and a  smart auto-correction function)

  - Improved cut-paste functionality

  - New integrated download application for ease in accessing downloaded files

  - Updated camera application

  - Power management and task killer applications

Important Notes:

- The new software version is: LS670ZVH

- Released in stages with 100% of devices having received the update within 10 days

- Refer to the LG Optimus S Software Update blog for install instructions

All in all, not a bad update, and one that should help the low-end device run just a little smoother and faster.

HTC Merge users on US Cellular, your day has come. Forget about Froyo, aka Android 2.2, and zoom straight to the latest version of Android available for non-Nexus phones - 2.3.4 "Gingerbread" (HTC version 3.10.573.1 to be exact - the image below taken from the update guide is outdated).

The update will need to be applied on a computer using HTC Sync and will wipe your device clean of emails, contacts, calendars, apps, bookmarks, and any other personalization - it'll basically be back to stock. Pictures, movies, music, and everything on your SD card should remain intact, but you'll have to set up your Merge from scratch once the update has been completed.

galaxy note thumb

No, that isn't a typo in the title - Samsung has indeed just unveiled a 5.3-inch phone, the 'Galaxy Note', at IFA 2011 to join the rest of its growing Galaxy family. The insanely big device doesn't just stop there, though, as Samsung has paired it with one of its Super AMOLED displays at a resolution of 1280 x 800. That happens to be the same resolution as my 13-inch laptop, so you get an idea of just how sharp this thing is, with a pixel density of 285ppi.

Running the show from behind the scenes, there is a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and 1GB of RAM.

Finally! The long awaited Gingerbread update for both the Droid Incredible and ThunderBolt will be hitting the airwaves in September, according to HTC's official Twitter.

2011-08-31 15h46_34

While several leaked Android 2.3.x builds for each device have surfaced over the past few months, none of them were deemed good enough to achieve "official" status, so it's good to know that HTC has finally put the finishing touches on each.

No solid date has been set, so just know that your waiting will finally come to an end within the next few weeks.

us cellular

US Cellular released an update today for the Samsung Galaxy Mesmerize that brings a number of enhancements to the device, including Android 2.3.4. For those unfamiliar with the Mesmerize, it's a Galaxy S phone packing some modest specs:

  • 4-inch 480x800 Super AMOLED display
  • 1GHz Hummingbird processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 2GB storage
  • 5MP rear shooter, VGA front cam

2011-08-30 12h38_58

With the addition of Gingerbread, Mesmerize owners will be able to rock all of the latest-and-greatest that Android has to offer, including improved power management, speed and UI enhancements, more control over running processes and applications, a better keyboard, and a lot more.

This update will erase all user data from the device, so make sure to perform a backup before proceeding!

We've been talking about Gingerbread for the Droid Incredible and its on-again-off-again status quite a bit lately, but after the official support docs showed up on VZW's site, we had confirmation of what we knew all along: the update is alive and kicking. It was rumored that it would start rolling out OTA-style earlier in the week but was delayed for unknown reasons, leaving Incredible owners without their cookie-filled upgrade just a little bit longer.

Fortunately, the wait is over, as we've received and exclusive leak of the Gingerbread RUU from a giving tipster. This looks like the final build, as it shares all the same version number from Verizon's documentation (4.06.605.2), as well as the same baseband (2.15.10.07.07).

Sony-Ericsson-Xperia-Neo-V_1

Sony Ericsson has taken a lot of flak in the past for its slow roll-out of Android upgrades, however this no longer appears to be the case as today they have announced that alongside the launch of their newest Android device, the Xperia neo V, all 2011 Xperia smartphones (i.e. the Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, and Xperia neo) will be upgraded to Android 2.3.4.

The update will bring a number of new features to the Xperia phones including video chat support for Google Talk, easier Facebook integration with "Facebook inside Xperia", swipe text input, screen capture support, and the ability to connect USB peripherals through the Sony Ericsson LiveDock.
