In spite of all the exciting pre-CES announcements we’ve been seeing over the last few days, one company has been preparing a somewhat less-than-enticing device – specifically, ViewSonic with a new low-end handset that’s been dubbed simply the ViewPhone 3.
While this won’t be Viewsonic’s first foray into the low-end Android market, it will be the company’s first US smartphone – and let’s just say it won’t exactly be sparking a revolution. Read More
Well, here's an unexpected surprise for all the Replenish owners out there -- Sprint's greenest handset is now getting the update to Android 2.3. The update should already be rolling out in OTA fashion, bringing a number of enhancements to the device:
- Upgraded OS from Froyo to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)
- Increased operating system speed and efficiency
- One touch word selection and copy/past
- Improved power management
- Downloads Management
- SMS messaging fix
As usual, the update is rolling out in stages, but it should hit all devices within ten days. Read More
Budget phone. The very sound of those two words, together, makes me slightly ill. In fact, it makes me almost immediately seethe with a sort of "nerd-rage." I hate the way budget phones are peddled onto the tech-illiterate by commission-motivated hucksters at "Big Four" carrier phone stores. I hate seeing people get locked into 2-year contracts because they got a "great deal" on a smartphone. "It was free!" they'll say, and that the nice sales representative (his name was Jimmy) kept them from buying "something they didn't need," because they walked in with a firm spending limit and they weren't going to budge! Users can check for the update manually by hitting Menu > About Phone > HTC Software Updates > Check. Otherwise, you have only to sit back and wait for an OTA notification before you can begin enjoying WiFi calling on your Amaze 4G. Read More
Google has released the latest of its monthly Android version distribution charts, and for the first time Android 2.3 Gingerbread is present on over half of all Android devices. A milestone, to be sure.
We also get a look at the end success rate of Honeycomb (a tablet-only version of Android), which achieved a mere 2.5% piece of the Android pie since the first Honeycomb device release back in February. Android 1.5 and 1.6 (Cupcake and Donut) have continued their march toward extinction, commanding only 2.1% of the Android population total. Read More

It looks like Gingerbread is finally getting ready to (officially) make its way to the Droid Charge, and, judging by the build number (EP4), it seems to be a slightly updated version of the build that was leaked earlier this month (EP4P).
The update will finally catch the device up to its smartphone peers in terms of Android version, but it will also bring the usual round of bug fixes and enhancements, as well. Read More

Ah, the Droid Charge -- the Droid that never should have been. It was the first LTE Droid to hit Verzon and... well, its accomplishments stopped there. In fact, this once-flagship device is still running Froyo, rendering some of its hardware basically useless (like the front facing camera). Fortunately, Gingerbread may be just around the corner for those who bought into the Charge hype, as a new leaked build just landed on MyDroidWorld, courtesy of P3Droid. Read More
