[Review] Wiz Kid Jr. Brings Some Magic Gameplay To An Otherwise Tired Genre

I'm going to make this clear from the get-go: I'm a big fan of puzzle games. However, I'm not a fan of when developers think that throwing a new coat of paint onto an old concept constitutes something praise-worthy.

Thankfully, Wiz Kid Jr, though unfortunately-named, is actually a pretty competent puzzler. Not content to just be a simple "match 3 or more" clone, it adds a couple features that bring some much-needed depth. In the game, you are a wizard that looks to defend his/her mana from hungry spirits. In order to gather mana, the wizard must match orbs of the same color.

Android seems to have become infested with games that have a large amount of things in common: they all pay homage to an extremely-successful Xbox game, and have won the hearts of players the world around.

Spirit plays a lot like Hyperlight, a game I've previously reviewed. The graphics are extremely similar in that they pay homage to Geometry Wars, and both take place on a flat, 2D plane. Spirit, however, has different mechanics that set it apart: instead of relying on twitchy tilt controls, your faster-than-light spacecraft is steered by your finger.

Lacking an on-screen joystick, I can only describe Spirit's controls as "relative." They don't require any specific positioning - instead, drawing a circle anywhere will make your ship fly in that pattern, even if it's nowhere near where your ship actually is.

[Fresh Out Of The Oven] Zombie Runaway Released To The Android Market, Asks You To Save The Undead

 Usually, when video games and zombies cross paths, the latter end up being our enemies. Because of their slow, plodding and plentiful nature, target practice against zombies is a fun (and scary) endeavor. However, in Com2uS' newest title, you're put in a unique position: this time, you're trying to save a zombie from his untimely death.

In Zombie Runaway you take control of a zombie who is running away (duh) from "evil" humans. In its way are multiple gravestones, monuments and spiky barriers that can all spell doom for our unlikely hero.

These obstacles come at you from one of three lanes; you can shift left or right to dodge, or jump straight over them to continue.

[Mech Monday] First Look: Death Cop And Destroy Gunners!

Mech games are popular for a few reasons: everyone loves giant robots, and blowing things up while crushing the little guy underneath your armored boot can definitely be a satisfying sensation.

Today we have two games that are definitely worth your attention if you've enjoyed mech games in the past. More importantly, they're two different flavours of mech games: there's Death Cop for those of you who love the American-style Mechwarrior franchise, and for those who loved the fast-paced, anime style of Virtua ON or Zone of the Enders we have Destroy Gunners. Both are free on the Android market.

[New Game Review] Save Toshi: A Cute Puzzler That Comes On Too Strong

Save Toshi is an iOS port that comes to us from developer Nitako. In the game, you are tasked with getting pop star Toshi onto a dancefloor, as her dancing kills demons. The storyline is very "Japan," as are the voice effects that accompany each of Toshi's movements. The voice acting is actually quite annoying, but the game (mercifully) comes with an option to turn it off.

Unless the anime aesthetic appeals to you, there's a good chance that Save Toshi won't be your cup of tea. However, there are certain things you can appreciate about this game - specifically, its new twist on an older formula.

[New Game Review] Inotia 3 Gives Us A Great Hack And Slash, But Is It Ruined By Micropayments?

Inotia 3, at it's core, is a story-driven RPG where you use a party made of six classes to confront your destiny, yadda yadda yadda. Along the way, you'll complete quests, World of Warcraft style, to appease villagers, get loot and become stronger. The game's main story is actually quite expansive; I haven't had the chance to play through the entire thing yet, but the developer touts 230+ quests, 130+ maps and enough quest text to let you get right deep into it.

This is actually true: the game doesn't shy away from the text, and from what I can tell the translation is much better than the game's market entry.

[Review] Diversion Surprises Us With Simple Platforming And Investment-Free Gameplay

Alright, I know what you might be thinking when you look at this game: "What's Matt thinking? Doesn't he know a hastily-churned out app when he sees one?"

That was the first impression I had when I was downloading this game, as well - Diversion's art style and woefully-specific name had me pessimistic. However, I was a bit surprised at how well this game actually plays; while it's not for everyone, it is actually kind of fun in small bursts.

Diversion is a platform game that is fairly simple in concept: you're a constantly-moving-forward character that can jump when the player taps the screen.

[Review] Age of Wind 2 Makes Us Yearn For The Seafaring Life

Age of Wind 2 indulges the side of us that would like to go off with Captain Jack Sparrow and look to make our own fortune. After an opening "story" sequence where you're tossed overboard from an exceptional ship, you're left to start with your own crew and a smaller vessel, hopefully to achieve success.

Yo ho!

Age of Wind 2 plays a lot like one of my favourite titles, Sid Meier's Pirates!. In that title, you would take on the role of a budding young pirate, patrolling the Caribbean and plundering how you'd like. The game was great because it was a sandbox game with a great premise: you could choose national allegiance and help them gain dominance over the Spanish Main, or just wreck everyone.

New Game: Ball-Hop Bowling Replicates Skee-Ball To a T, Wasted Money Included

Everyone who's been to a midway knows the format of skee-ball; for a couple bucks you ramp some wooden balls into scoring targets in order to get tickets to exchange for prizes. A new game for Android, Ball-Hop Bowling, recreates the whole experience, rip-off and all.

Maybe "rip-off" is a bit unfair: Ball-Hop Bowling is free, and gives you the "true" skee-ball experience without having to pay. However, if you're looking for any type of progression in this game beyond the default table/ball, be prepared to shell out some cash, or at least hours of your time.

Like real skee-ball, Ball-Hop Bowling is a quick experience; your nine balls seem like a lot, but they can be blown through extremely quick.

Play Angry Birds On Your Nook Color? Head Into Barnes And Noble For A Free Unlockable Character

Angry Birds fans who play the game on a Nook Color now have a reason to trudge to Barnes & Noble. The book retailer will be offering a promotion for the game, allowing users who play the game while connected to its Wi-Fi to receive the Mighty Eagle downloadable character free of charge.

The Mighty Eagle character allows you to insta-clear pesky levels, essentially giving you a "level skip" cheat for the popular puzzler. Developer Rovio is promising more rewards for those who make return trips to the store - could this be the beginning of more location-aware promoting?

While Angry Birds is a free download to "regular" Android devices, it costs a full $3 for Nook Color tablets.
