The seas are a dangerous place, lads. The Marauders are thick amongst the waves, and you are but an inexperienced young commander, seeking to make a name at the helm of your fleet. Your ships are heavily armed, but it's going to take more than firepower to stay afloat in Leviathan: Warships. This game is heavy on strategy, long-term planning, and attention to detail. As good as some aspects of this game are, the controls threaten to sink it before we even get out of dry dock.

Gameplay

My first impression of Leviathan was that of another top-down real-time strategy game (RTS).

Welcome to the first entry in our Bonus Round series, wherein we tell you all about the new Android games of the day that we couldn't get to during our regular news rounds. Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can't wait for our bi-weekly roundups, and don't want to wade through a whole day's worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Without further ado:

The DRM: Death Ray Manta

The chuckle-inducing title of this game has nothing to do with digital rights management. In DRM, you're tasked with shooting things until they blow up (the American way!) in a dual-stick, top-down arena shooter that borrows some liberal style cues from the Geometry Wars series.

The Indie Gala is back for its third mobile release. Pay what you want for four Android games, and if you offer more than the average, you'll get your hands on five more. The average is currently under $4. At less than 50 cents per game, I've bought gum balls that were more expensive.

IndieGala

Handy sliders are situated at the bottom of the page that allow you to divide your payment between the developers, charity, and the Indie Gala folks themselves. The setup should be familiar to anyone who is accustomed to the Humble Bundle. The games include:

  • Chimpact ($0.99)
  • Trainz Simulator ($4.87)
  • 9th Dawn ($2.99)
  • Mystery Fourth Game
    • Bag It!

If you've never played Bejeweled before, you're probably in the minority of human beings in the developed world. This series of puzzle games is a classic and thoroughly addictive in just about every form it's ever taken. After being available on iOS and Facebook for a while, Bejeweled Blitz has reached Android, and it's free to download (you should know what that means by now).

Bejeweled Blitz is based around the tried-and-true matching gameplay with some additional social elements built in. There is also a time limit, hence the "blitz" part. You can play against Facebook friends, or just spam your news feed with Bejeweled updates.

      Boulder Dash®-XL™

Today's roundup is brought to you by Boulder Dash XL from Herocraft. Boulder Dash wasn't considered the greatest game of the bygone 8-bit era, but it had its share of fans thanks to interesting "Dig-Dug meets Tetris" gameplay.

In this edition of "apps that you probably don't need by will likely buy anyway because they're cheaper than normal," we have some good picks. A music player, a realistic boxing title, a music-maker, and a couple of reverse-tower defense titles are all on sale at the moment.

Update: A lot more stuff has been added since the original post went up this morning. Newer stuff is at the bottom of the list.

Over the past few weeks we've highlighted several Play Store sales that hit at the end of each week. Today, however, looks like a few devs decided to try middle-of-the-week sales, and we figured some of those may not make it to the week's end. So here it is – a short list of sales that are happening right now.

If any of those strike your fancy, it'd probably be a good idea to pick 'em up sooner rather than later.

When we reviewed the MOGA Pocket (then simply called "MOGA") back in October of last year, we loved the controller, but felt it lacked a lot of functionality users want out of a game controller (emulator support, anyone?). Enter the MOGA Pro ($50): a larger, more full-featured version of the MOGA Pocket. With this controller, it appears that PowerA has taken into consideration everything it did "wrong" with the Pocket, and used that to improve things with the Pro. More than just a bigger version of last year's controller, the Pro brings all new functionality to the table, along with a more familiar form factor and extra buttons.
