BBR THD

As promised, Playbox today brought the console racing experience to Tegra 2 devices with the release of Bang Bang Racing THD. This top-down racer, previously available on XBOX 360 and Playstation 3, is one of the soon to be numerous games optimized for multicore phones and tablets. With the added device power comes a level of physics that is yet unknown in mobile gaming.

Let's just hope all that new hotness is worth the relatively high cost. At $7.99 for an introductory price (i.e. the price is going even higher soon) this isn't the cheapest game on the Market, but judging from the gameplay videos it may just earn the price tag.

Game ports fall into this weird category where developers have both an easy and difficult job in front of them. On one hand, the game can easily market itself on the nostalgia or hype of the product. On the other, however, they must successfully capture the feel of the original, which can be difficult.

The original Majesty is a bit of a cult hit in PC Gaming circles. You played as the traditional "overseer" of a kingdom and looked to vanquish whatever evil had set up shop within your borders. However, there was a twist in all this: you did not have direct control over the heroes and minions that helped your kingdom run.

If you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s and played PC games, you've undoubtedly heard of the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise - a series of turn-based strategy games by New World Computing. Heroes of Might and Magic 2 was the first truly amazing game of the series, followed by HOMM3 with improved graphics, and then going to crap starting with the 4th one. I think HOMM2 and HOMM3 collectively stole not months, if not years, of my time, and I am still just as excited to play either of them as I was back in the day - the replayability factor of these games is through the roof.

A couple of weeks ago we highlighted three upcoming games for Tegra devices, and the first of the trio - Pinball HD - will officially land today. Pinball HD is an iOS port from game developers Gameprom, and brings a new school twist to an old school game.

This game is graphically rich and beautiful, full of amazing textures and environments. The gameplay is incredible, as it offers varying dynamics according to device angle and orientation. For example, when in landscape mode, you get a full view of the table, but a quick shift to portrait mode will give you a fly-over view so you can see all of the action from directly above.

Last weekend, a developer (and redditor) posted on Andreddit to promote his new game, Clever Contraptions. He said he was "inspired by the classic game 'the incredible machine' [sic]" - a promise that triggered my nostalgia and prompted me to download it immediately. In the days since, I've managed to spend a bit of time with the game, and I have to admit I've come away pleased, despite a few minor niggles.

The official app description:

Clever Contraptions is an entertaining puzzle game with incredible, life-like physics simulation. The purpose is to perform such seemingly simple tasks as putting a ball in a basket by building intricate, creative chain reactions.

Next time you want to purchase a game from Gameloft, you may want to pause and reconsider: their official policy is to tie app purchases to the device and phone number - and it's strictly enforced. We received an email from a peeved Gameloft customer who found this out the hard way, and we'd hate to see anyone else encounter the same (frankly ridiculous) issue.

Our tipster (George H.) switched from a MyTouch 4G to a G2x. Apps purchased from Gameloft through the Android Market redownloaded on his new device just fine. However, he couldn't download the games he'd purchased from the Gameloft web store, so he emailed support:

I just purchased a new Android phone and want to use all the software I previously purchased on my new phone.

Our pal Andrew Schillinger - the "lead code monkey" (no, seriously) at AdultSwim.com - pinged us a few hours ago to let us know that Adult Swim has released its first Android app/game, and it's everything we'd expect from AS. It's called Robot Unicorn Attack, and it takes you though the dream world of a robot unicorn.

Robot Unicorn Attack finally arrives on the Android Market!

• "Creates an experience that is quite honestly too awesome for words." -Touch Arcade
• "There's nothing better than storming the purple shores of some nameless land as a robot, rainbow-sh***ing unicorn to the beat of Erasure's 'Always'." -Kotaku
• Compete with other Robot Unicorns via OpenFeint leaderboards and achievements
• Finally, the addicting Internet sensation gallops majestically onto Android Market

Everyone has dreams…even robot unicorns.

Paid app models have always been fascinating to me - I've even had a TODO sitting around in my post ideas list to explore various methods of distributing software without inundating users too much. Pro features, time trials, disabling ads for money, in-app key unlocks, lite versions, paid-only ones without trials - these are all on the list and all have their pluses and minuses.

This new idea, however, is so radical, brilliant, and crazy compared to the rest that I think it might just work, and I'd like to run it by you to see if I'm not alone. Headcase Games' new action-puzzle game "180" has 2 versions, just like you would expect - a free one with ads and a $1.99 one without.

There are two things I know about chess for sure: I like playing it and I hate playing against computers. Computers are cold, calculating, and just generally smarter than me. They don't make mistakes. They want to take over my planet with their cold, metal claw-hands and laser eyes. If something is going to make me feel stupid, it damn well better be a person. This is why I like Chess-presso. Chess-presso knows that they can delay the eventual mechanical uprising by allowing me to play the game of kings with other flawed, squishy humans.

I really, really enjoy this game.

It seems like it was just yesterday that mobile game developer Rovio Mobile announced that Angry Birds Rio would be coming to the Android Market and... Oh, wait, it was just yesterday. I guess they didn’t want to waste any time delivering on that promise!

Once available exclusively in the Amazon Appstore, Angry Birds Rio features 60 all-new levels, hidden achievements, a boss battle, and much more. To add to that, Rovio has announced that there would be episodic updates all throughout 2011. The game is free, but you’ll have to deal with the usual Angry Birds ads.

So there you have it, now everyone – not just US residents – can enjoy even more bird slinging action than ever before.
