Samsung's Photoshop Deception: The Real Thickness Of The 8.9" Galaxy Tab

If you saw our post the other day about Samsung's teaser image for their rumored 8.9" Galaxy Tab (expected to be announced at CTIA later this month), you may have seen what appeared to be an extremely thin tablet. At a casual glance, it looks svelte enough to give the .34" thick iPad 2 a run for its money in its lack of girth. Then a diligent tipster shared his homework with us and, well, it looks like Samsung has been using some Photoshop lighting effects to create a bit of an illusion.

Unless you are viewing it from the perfect angle on your screen, it looks, as we described it, "razor-thin," does it not?

Razor-thin 8.9" Galaxy Tab Teased Again By Samsung

We know Samsung will be unveiling a new tablet at CTIA later this month, and all signs point to their showcasing an 8.9" Galaxy Tab. The same number, 78910, which was displayed in a promo last week, has appeared again on a new image posted on the manufacturer's Facebook page. It will almost certainly be measured at 8.9" because Samsung debuted the first major Android tab at 7" (the original Galaxy Tab), and has announced a 10.1" model (the Galaxy Tab 10.1) - leaving 8.9" as the likely proportion of the upcoming slate.

Asking us again "What's your Tab life?", the visual shows an extreme closeup of a tablet with a cross-hatched texture that looks quite thin.

MORE Tablets Coming? Yes - From Motorola, Samsung

If you thought Android powerhouse manufacturers Samsung and Motorola were going to rest on their accomplishments with the Galaxy Tab and XOOM (respectively), think again. In separate announcements today, it was revealed that both companies are already working on tablet sequels.

In a Facebook PR post for the upcoming "Samsung Mobile Unpacked" event on March 22, the Galaxy Tab maker posted an image of an unknown Honeycomb-running tablet with the numbers "78910" on the screen, accompanied by the question "What's your Tab life?" Whether these numbers refer to display sizes or not is still up for debate (let's just hope the figures aren't the price, shall we?).

Samsung Releases Figures For 2010: Over 10 Million Galaxy S Phones Sold, Tab Sales Mysteriously Absent

Early this morning (or late last night if you want to get technical), Samsung made its quarterly earnings call, and the company's mobile division is doing quite well - profits are up 38%, thanks in large part to the Galaxy S line of phones.

Samsung managed to sell over 10 million Galaxy S handsets in 2010, comprising roughly a third of all the manufacturer's smartphone sales. Given the Galaxy S's global launch along with its premium hardware and fair pricing, it's no surprise that device has been a big hit. But what about the Galaxy Tab?

Since its release, the smallish tablet has received mixed reviews (though our own Aaron Gingrich thoroughly enjoyed it), and given its treatment by some of the major tech blogs, "mixed" is putting it politely:

This thing is just a mess.

Leaked Samsung MWC Schedule Shows Galaxy S 2, Tab 2 Presentations Planned

It looks like a bit of an oopsie has resulted in Samsung's official Mobile World Congress (MWC) schedule leaking out. The details of the slip aren't available and aren't especially important, because this looks and sounds legitimate - especially since it (sort of) reinforces rumblings we've heard before.

Surprisingly, we have absolutely no idea what kind of hardware to expect. What I do know, though, is that if The S 2 ends up being this... boy, will my face ever be red. But hey - I still feel fairly safe in saying it won't be. (I hope.)

Galaxy Tab Prices Slashed On Both Sides Of The Pond: $250 At T-Mobile USA, £359 At Tesco UK

TmoNews posted an image last night confirming that tomorrow, the price of the Galaxy Tab with a new T-Mobile 2-year contract will be cut to just $250 after mail-in rebate - $50 less than the current mark. Price cuts for the Galaxy Tab have been popping up all over it seems, and after Verizon announced that it'll be getting a new-and-improved 4G Galaxy Tab with a faster 1.2GHz processor, it makes sense. Unfortunately, the Tab will still cost you 500 big ones off-contract at T-Mo.

And if you live in the UK and are in the market to buy an Android tablet (or any tablet, for that matter), now is the time to consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Motorola Estimates Sales Of The XOOM Tablet To Reach 700,000 To 800,000 In Q1 2011

Motorola is expected to launch its XOOM tablet in February 2011 and, according to DigiTimes, they have placed an order for about 700,000 to 800,000 units. If there is greater demand, DigiTimes expects the order to reach up to one million units by the end of the first quarter of 2011.

Interestingly, DigiTimes also claims that Motorola and Samsung are being given special treatment by Google, while competitors, such as LG and HTC, are being left behind. This could explain why Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering at Google, originally demoed Android 3.0 Honeycomb on a (then unofficial) Motorola XOOM.

At this point, Motorola's sales estimates seem rather modest, considering the Samsung Galaxy Tab sold over 1 million units in its first month and the Apple iPad is expected to sell up to 7 million units in the first quarter of 2011.

CES 2011: Opera For Tablets Demo [Video]

Opera Software's Jeremy Forrester spent some time showing off Opera's latest browser, which was designed specifically for tablets. The browser was shown running on Samsung's Galaxy Tab.

The browser is not completely finished, but you can get a good idea of how it performs in the video above. It works nicely with Adobe Flash and should provide a familiar experience to those who are have used Opera's previous mobile browsers. More info will be made available by Opera come MWC in February.

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Tab Sees An Upgrade: 1.2GHz Hummingbird Processor, LTE Radio, 5MP Camera

With all the new tablets from players like Motorola, ASUS, and Acer, it goes without saying that Samsung was starting to feel a little jealous - and so, in partnership with Verizon, it decided to do something about the situation.

Namely, the company has released an upgraded Galaxy Tab, complete with a 1.2GHz Hummingbird processor (the original model only had a 1GHz unit), an upgraded rear camera (it's now 5MP as opposed to the previous generation's 3MP), and an LTE radio. For now, it's a Verizon exclusive, and we're still waiting to hear about the pricing and availability so, in the meantime, feast your eyes on the press release below.
