We've all heard the old saying "better late with a newer version of Android than never," right? That's how I've always heard it said, and apparently I'm not alone. Telstra just announced its own variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III, which will be available beginning October 9th.

The Aussie 4G version of the device is basically identical to the international edition:

  • 4.8" SAMOLED display
  • 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor
  • 8MP Rear shooter
  • 16GB storage, microSD Card slot
  • 4G LTE, HSPA+ Dual Channel 3G
  • Android 4.1 with Touchwiz

The good news here is that the superphone will ship with Jelly Bean out of the box, so users won't have to wait for an OTA update to become available to get the latest version of the OS.

If you've been waiting to get your hands on a 4G GSIII in Australia, the wait is over in ten days.

You may recall the collective scream of horror emitted by the Android community when it was confirmed over the summer that the Verizon model of the Galaxy S III would ship with a locked bootloader. As a consolation, Samsung decided to sell an unlocked "Developer Edition" for full price online. While the regular device has since been cracked, it's a lot cleaner to buy the dev version and now it's on sale.

The phone is purchased direct from the Samsung site and is identical in every way to the Verizon-sold edition, except that it has an unlocked bootloader ready for modding.

If downloading source code and picking through lines of code is something you enjoy doing, then today is a day of gifts: Samsung just released not one, but two different kernel source codes. I can almost feel your excitement.

First up, the GSIII. The international variant (i9300) was recently updated to Jelly Bean, and Samsung just made available the respective kernel source. So, if you've been waiting on that, it's ready for you.

Secondly, the LTE variant of the Galaxy Tab 10.1; this one's a bit quirky, though. Previously, Samsung has always released two versions: VZW and USCC. For the ICS code, though, there is only one: NA.

We've seen Wirefly Schmackdowns before, but we've never seen one like this. Under normal circumstances, we watch them compare two high-end Android phones. Today, however, they've put mortal enemies in the ring for a fight to the death: the GSIII and the iPhone 5. Oh snap.

They compare the size, weight, display, hardware guts, and software, ultimately calling a winner at the end. Honestly, we're not surprised at how it turns out, but you won't find any spoilers here. Hit play and watch for yourself.

One of the most anticipated OS upgrades in recent Android history has reportedly begun in Europe (specifically, Poland) where official Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean firmware was discovered via Kies a couple of hours ago. Since no carrier marking was attached to the announcement by SamMobile's tracker, it looks like the update applies to the unlocked, unbranded variant localized to Poland - specifically, GT-I9300MBDXEO. Google Now and the updated Google Search, offline speech recognition, Project Butter, expandable notifications - it's all there.

Earlier this  month, Samsung promised that the international S III units would start seeing Android 4.1 as soon as October, so it appears the company is actually ahead of schedule.

In an attempt to show off the capabilities of its nationwide 4G network, T-Mobile is giving every Galaxy S III owner a free copy of The Avengers as a virtual preload.

New and existing users will be able to download the movie from the Samsung Media Hub, with T-Mobile encouraging customers to take advantage of their unlimited 4G data. Users with Samsung AllShare will be able to stream the movie, and any other movie downloaded from the media hub, to their TV.

“T-Mobile is committed to bringing leading-edge smartphone experiences to our customers by offering new features, including exciting content such as ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’” said Brad Duea, senior vice president, product management, T-Mobile USA.

Quick, Galaxy S III users on AT&T: check your device's settings for a new over-the-air download. Just be sure to temper your enthusiasm, because the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update (which we weren't really expecting for another month at least) is nowhere in sight. The latest version of the software is build IMM76D.I747UCALH9, which adds a number of small tweaks that users might find useful.

There's no official change log as of yet, but according to posts on the XDA forums, most of the additions are designed to make the phone a little easier to use. The most obvious change is a brightness slider in the pull-down menu, seen on some previous Samsung devices and quite a few custom ROMs.

Last year, Samsung revolutionized parodies of revolutions. Now, they've revolutionized the revolutionizing of making fun of revolutionizing revolutions. The Korean manufacturer has released the newest iteration of its "Next Big Thing" series of ads. This model has 50% more runtime than last year's model. New features include "the iPhone is for your parents," "we've had 4G for a while," and the totally not subtext-laden "my screen is bigger than your screen."

The new 90-second spot will be available tonight on national TV. No word yet on whether the ad will be compatible with current consumer biases, or if users will have to upgrade their snark to take the commercial seriously.

We've seen some really cool things come along with augmented reality technology. In fact, just a few days ago the Chestburster app made its way to Android, allowing users to finally see what it's like to watch a baby alien tear its way out of things (up to and including actual chests). Now, however, we see augmented reality used in a much more practical manner with a new app called HandsonAR.

With the recent phablet movement and announcement of Verizon's LG Intuition and Samsung's Galaxy Note II, many people are curious about super-sized phones. The main question is: how much larger than my existing phone is it?
