Verizon's Galaxy Camera Receiving A Fairly Sizable Update, Brings Four New Smart Modes, Remote View Finder, And More

If you happened to be one of the less than 13 people who shelled out $550 to get Verizon's variant of the Galaxy Camera, then a nice update is heading your way. It appears to bring some pretty useful new features, like S Memo, a new Help App, four new Smart Modes, and a nifty remote view finder.

So far as the new Smart Modes are concerned, the update brings scenes for dawn, indoor parties, snow, and food to the device, for a total of 19. In addition to those, you can now access the GCam's view finder via your Galaxy S Series, Tab Series, or iPhone with the companion app, which is pretty rad.

Samsung Announces WiFi Galaxy Camera Arriving Later This Month For $449

We first heard about a carrier-free, WiFi-only Galaxy Camera back in February. At the time we had no information on when it would come to market or how much it would cost, but today that's no longer the case! Samsung has officially announced that the smartphone-ified point-and-shoot will land on the company's website and authorized retailers "later this month" for $449.

For those who don't memorize specs of unreleased cameras months before they come to market, here's what's inside:

Not everyone's sold on Samsung's Android-powered camera experiment, but for those who are, you can grab one for a cool $30 off. The international 3G/LTE version of the Galaxy Camera is the latest gadget to get its time in the spotlight of eBay's Daily Deals promotion, going for $469.99, $30 off the price you'll pay in most stores and even more off of the Amazon price. Unlike most of the discounted 3G devices out there, this one doesn't require a contract (since the Galaxy Camera is sold without one anyway) but you'll need your own active SIM card to take advantage of that mobile connection.

If you really want Samsung's Galaxy Camera (our review), but aren't into the idea of being tied down to a carrier so you can take pictures, it's your lucky day. The company just announced the Galaxy Camera Wi-Fi, which quite frankly makes a whole lot more sense, anyway.

Essentially, the Galaxy Camera Wi-Fi is exactly like its cellular-connected counterpart in terms of pure spec (and aesthetics):

If you're one of the few who dropped the coin and got a Samsung Galaxy Camera, good news: the Galaxy Camera toolkit is available now over at XDA. This comes from developer mskip, who is also responsible for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 4, and Nexus 10 toolkits, so you can rest assured that it is about as stable and secure as they come.

With the software, you can easily install drivers, root the camera, perform a full Nandroid backup, and so much more:

Install drivers automatically

Backup/Restore a single package or all apps, user data and Internal Storage

Backup your /data/media (virtual SD Card) to your PC for a Full Safe backup of data

Root any public build (different options)

Flash Stock Recovery image to device

Perform a FULL NANDROID Backup of your system via adb and save in Custom Recovery format on your PC

Pull /data and /system folders, compress to a .tar file and save to your PC

Verizon's Galaxy Camera Will Go On Sale For $550 On Dec. 13th, Shared Data Plan For $5 Per Month Promo Price

AT&T has already launched its version of the Galaxy Camera, so now it's Verizon's turn. Arriving in both white and black options, the nation's largest carrier will be offering the high tech point and shoot for $550 without a contract. This is a little bit steeper than AT&T's $500, but to make up for it, the carrier is allowing customers to add this device to their existing shared data plans for $5/month. Not a bad deal.

When Liam reviewed it a while back, he decided it was a good camera, but didn't live up to the price. The even higher tag here might dissuade some customers, however, it's worth noting that if you're the target market for this kind of device and you land this promotional plan (that's only available for an unspecified limited time), you'll make up the extra $50 within the first year.

Verizon Edition Of Galaxy Camera With LTE Outed By Official Samsung Product Page

After our review, the Galaxy Camera may not be high on your wishlist this holiday season, but if you're set on Samsung's smartphone-meet-camera mashup, and AT&T's HSPA+ version isn't quick enough for your fast-paced shutterbug lifestyle, you may be in luck: it looks like the Verizon Galaxy Camera is for real.

A Samsung product page appears to have inadvertently gone live for the device (model EK-GC120), boasting Verizon's 4G LTE connectivity, along with everything else the standard Galaxy Camera does. Pricing isn't available, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Verizon's edition sporting the same $500 entry fee as its AT&T sibling.

Samsung's Galaxy Camera, the manufacturer's first entry into the world of dedicated shooters powered by Android, was announced with little warning at IFA earlier this year. Besides Nikon's foray into the market, the Galaxy Camera is one of the only Android cameras we've yet seen. Frankly, of the two, Samsung's entry is the only one that seems worth looking at.

The question of how much longer point-and-shoot cameras can see success is a fair one – after all, DSLRs are becoming smaller and more affordable all the time, while smartphone cameras are reaching to fill the gap point-and-shoots would leave behind.

We've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Galaxy Camera on AT&T for over a month now and today we finally received the juicy details we've been anticipating. The camera is going to come with a price tag of $499, putting it firmly outside the realm of your typical casual point-and-shoot market. However, you can knock $100 off that price tag if you buy it with an on-contract Galaxy smartphone. The camera itself will not be subject to a two-year contract, of course. Just the attached smartphone. Not a bad deal, really.
