[MWC 2012] Samsung Galaxy Beam Hands-On

Earlier today we got a chance to play with Samsung's Galaxy Beam (though photo opportunities were limited by lighting), and I have to say - for a projector phone, it's not bad.

The 1GHz dual-core processor hums along through Gingerbread (I know, I know - but an ICS update is surely in the works) nicely, and the 4" WVGA display gets the job done. While it's no flagship device, for such a niche piece of hardware, Samsung has done a pretty decent job here. The yellow banding highlight is a nice, unique touch, and holding the Beam is little different than using almost any flagship Android phone from 2010 or 2011.

[MWC 2012] Samsung Announces The Galaxy Beam: A 4-Inch Gingerbread Phone With A Projector

Looks like Samsung is getting a head start on its MWC announcements, and one of the first devices to hit the scene is the Galaxy Beam. While the Beam's specs aren't all that impressive, it does have one trick up its sleeve:

  • 4.0-Inch  480*800 TFT display
  • 1GHz dual-core processor
  • 6GB RAM (this must be a typo, but that's what the Beam's landing page says)
  • 5MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front camera
  • 8GB built-in storage with microSD slot
  • 2000 mAh battery
  • 15 lumen projector

...did you catch the kicker? Yeah, it's packing a projector. The idea of a projector in a phone is nothing new, but it has been a while since we've seen a rehash of the idea.
