Lg-g2x-1

A few days ago, LG made available the V21y update for owners of the G2x. Users were delighted - though the update wasn't major, it did seem to bring some notable additions, according to this unofficial changelog:

  • Update to Android 2.3.4
  • Built-in Google Plus capabilities
  • Swype 3.26.92
  • New RIL and baseband (dated March 11, 2012)
  • Improved battery life

However, the update was pulled shortly after, though those who'd managed to grab it found it quite stable.

Yesterday, we took a look at Riptide GP for Tegra devices with the addition of controller support. To celebrate the update and all the fun that adding a controller to your Tegra tablet can bring, we've once again teamed up with NVIDIA to bring our most massive giveaway yet: The Riptide Gaming Power Pack.

Just take a look of all that is in store for the winner:

  • ASUS Eee Pad Transformer 32GB with keyboard dock.

With the launch of the 404 page design contest a few weeks ago, we wanted to achieve 2 goals:

  • supply a premium giveaway that didn't involve social media for a change and
  • give the talented readers of Android Police a chance to showcase their creativity and leave a permanent imprint on this website's design and identity

After over 140 submissions - some great, some not so good, some incredibly creative and witty, and some hilarious, I've requested your help in selecting your winner by picking the top 20 designs and putting them up for a reader vote.

The Prize

Alright, we heard from a lot of you that social contests just aren't up your alley sometimes - so we've listened.

In an "lolwut" moment, LG announced via their forums today that Gingerbread for the G2x would come "by summer".... and then the update landed approximately an hour later.

The current software is V21e and can be downloaded via LG's proprietary Mobile Software Updater, as shown above. Reports are just starting to trickle in, but we do know the update is 178MB and brings GRI40, or Android 2.3.3. Before downloading and installing the update, you should know that it will break root.

We often report on things that only affect us here in the US, but other areas of the world aren't out of our realm of coverage, either. Thanks to a tipster, we have reason to believe that the Gingerbread update for the Scandinavian variant of the LG G2x/Optimus 2X/LGP990 has been delayed from Summer to Fall of 2011 - if the Swedish LG site is correct, that is.

The Swedish LG site doesn't seem to be the only one reporting this timeline change - the Danish and Norwegian sites are also reporting the same thing.

So, you bought that fancy new Nexus S/DROID Charge/Galaxy S II/G2X/Flyer with a front-facing camera, and you were excited to make video calls. Then you noticed there isn't any native video chat client for Android (yet - Talk will have this integrated soon). Then you heard about fring, which is pretty cool. Then you tried to install it, only to discover it didn't work. Then you probably had a sad.

On Monday, we teased you guys with an early look at Gingerbread running on the G2x from This Is My Next. There was some definitely some disappointment in the air when you realized that a download wasn't available at that time, but that all changes now.

This is for rooted devices only.

The leaked version, which also appears to be the final version, of Gingerbread for the G2x is now available for those running rooted devices.

We told you about Samsung dropping the source for the Sidekick 4G this morning, and now it's LG's turn to release some code. The lucky winner is... the G2x. That's right, this awesome new beast-of-a-phone has already received ClockwordMod Recovery and now it's about to get even better - as soon as devs get ahold of the source and start cooking up some homebrew Android goodness (CyanogenMod, anyone?).

It's hard to believe they've done in a week what HTC thinks could take 90-120 days of hard work and intensive decision-making!
