The Transformer Prime is a nice tablet. The GPS problems it suffers due to its all-aluminum case, however, are not. We've heard that ASUS is planning on alleviating these problems with a GPS dongle, and now we're finally getting a look at it. It's uh...well, it sure is a dongle

According to Land of Droid, this giant, we'll say, wand-looking thing, is the GPS dongle that's going to "fix" the Transformer Prime's GPS issues. Of course, from the looks of it, this dongle creates some problems of its own. For starters, subtle it is not. It's a huge, ugly block on the top of an otherwise gorgeous tablet.

Cinemark

Though movie apps like Flixster and Moviefone (which allow users to locate any theaters near them) clearly have their utility, sometimes it's nice to have an app specific to a certain theater brand. Precisely for this purpose, Cinemark Theaters, one of the biggest names in the "motion picture exhibition industry," has released an official Android app.

The application will grant users GPS directions to any domestic Cinemark theater, in addition to:

  • Securely purchasing movie tickets
  • Accessing "My Cinemark" favorite theaters
  • Searching for their preferred Cinemark theater locations
  • Viewing their gift card balances
  • Viewing their ticket purchase histories
  • Searching for movies Coming Soon
  • Searching for movies Now Playing
  • Viewing movie trailers
  • Rating, Synopsis, Cast etc.

Marakana, a company that's been "helping IT professionals get better at what they do" since 2001, has been busy (since January) releasing the latest series of videos in its Android Bootcamp franchise, this time updated for Ice Cream Sandwich development.

For those not familiar, Android Bootcamp is a series of videos aimed at those looking to learn Android development. Some may remember a similar project by TheNewBoston, though Marakana has broken its set of tutorials into much larger chunks, with the 2012 series currently totaling 29 videos (that's over 20 hours of free instruction).

The videos are extremely comprehensive, and cover everything from security to threading to Android UI design.

Haven't filed your taxes yet? Maybe it's a good thing you waited, because this weekend only TurboTax is offering Android users a free Basic or Deluxe return through their Android app, including the Kindle Fire version on the Amazon Appstore. This includes a federal and state return (savings of $87 for Deluxe, $107 for Premier, $127 for Home and Business).

The catch? You have to start your return (from scratch, if you've already begun in the online or desktop versions) between now and April 1st, and use the Android app to do the whole thing (you can't start in the Android app then finish online).

Verizon customers will want to keep an eye on their inboxes today, as big red has begun sending emails to select customers offering a free upgrade to Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, Stratosphere, or Motorola's Droid RAZR with a new 2-year agreement.

The email is presumably being sent out to those customers who have a 3G-only plan, or who haven't made the jump to a smartphone yet, judging by the following snippet of text, though it's hard to be certain exactly who qualifies for the deal.

“There’s never been a better time to move to 4G LTE – Upgrade to your FREE 4G LTE smartphone today!”

The Next Web rightly notes that while the offer may seem bold for offering customers discounts between $99 and $299, it is likely that promoting 4G data plans will pull in enough cash to make the deal worthwhile.

A few months ago, Liam spent some time with 17 mobile security apps, one of which was an app called Cerberus. He came away quite impressed - so impressed, in fact, that he crowned it the winner (and, as a license is just $4, it was also crowned the best for the budget-minded).

The app is always free to download and comes with a 1 week free trial, but a lifetime license is normally $4. I say normally because, as you have likely deduced from the title, the developer is offering free lifetime licenses in celebration of hitting 100,000 users.

To get the license, just download the app and register an account (it requires a username, password, and email address - nothing tricky), then fill out the form and hit Submit.

Just three short weeks ago, we shared news of a major update to Dropbox for Android that, among other things, brought automatic photo/video syncing to the service. At the time, it was still in beta and only available for download directly from Dropbox, but now a final version of the update has hit the Market. The changelog:

  1. Allows you to automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan
  2. Up to 3 GB of free space for uploading photos automatically (in 500 MB increments)
  3. Upload files of any size
  4. Various performance improvements & bug fixes
  5. Heads up, Dropbox can no longer be installed on your SD Card due to more secure credential storage.

XYBOARD101_Front-420x305

While Motorola tablets may not exactly be flying off the shelves, that hasn't stopped Motorola from trying everything they can to sell them. Occasionally they're even a pretty good deal! For example, right now you can get the 8.2" Xyboard with a free portfolio case (normally $39) and HD dock (normally $49) for $399. If 10.1" tablets are more your style, you can get the same deal on the larger model for $499. Both tablets are WiFi-only with 16GB of onboard storage.

All the negative stigma attached to the Xoom aside, the Xyboard is a decent tablet. While it's only sporting a dual-core processor instead of the quad-cores inside tablets like the Transformer Prime, it still holds up pretty well for a tablet that effectively starts at about $310.

fraggertiny

Fragger is a new game from Miniclip.com that gives you a pack of grenades and a phalanx of immobile terrorists and says, "Have fun!" Once you've set aside your silly ethical hang-ups about attacking helpless, faceless enemies, you might think that the game is similar to Angry Birds. It's actually a lot closer to BASIC classic, Gorillas.

Remember this?

Then you will like this

Back in the old days, we had to adjust our angle and velocity manually. You kids today get to use your fancy touch screens to aim the grenades and adjust how far they fly.

T-Mobile is evidently planning a huge sale in celebration of Valentine's day, offering all phones (plus the Springboard tablet and G-Slate) free for one day only this Saturday, February 11th. The deal will apply to current and new customers with Value or Classic Plans. Customers looking to take advantage of the sale will need to pay the 2-year subsidy, and will receive a full reimbursement via mail-in rebate card.

Update: The sale was apparently extended by an extra day through end of Sunday due to downed systems and busy stores that couldn't handle demand.

It sounds like those looking to pick up certain devices (including the Galaxy SII and HTC Amaze 4G) may need to have a 5GB data plan to be eligible for the sale.
