An Issue of Volume

From the day I eagerly removed the cellophane wrapping around the artful, Google-themed box which contained my Nexus One, I have had only one real gripe with Android: volume management. For a while I just dealt with it - the only way to adjust in-call volume was during a call, and other volume settings had to be controlled via the sound settings menu, or in their proper context.

It was a hassle. Reaching the settings aside, remembering if I had quieted my phone (unless it was silenced) or turned down the alarm volume was up to me, the user.

Introduction

If you're like most Android users, you may run into slight space issues when it comes to available internal storage for apps. The daunting task you face, then, is to go through each of your apps and locate the major megabyte offenders. What a pain.

Alternatively, you may discover that your precious SD card is suddenly refusing to write a new episode of the Stuff You Should Know podcast (which is awesome), so now you have to drop everything to figure out where the fat is.

Enter DiskUsage.

DiskUsage is really quite a simple application: upon being opened, you are prompted to select a storage location to view (internal storage or SD card).

Looks like both Wirefly and Amazon Wireless are up to their old, price-slashing tricks again. This time their sights rested on the brand new Samsung Fascinate for Verizon Wireless.

The Deal

The new $99.99 deal, offered by both sites, is a 50% discount off carrier subsidized price of $199.99.

While the BOGO (buy-one-get-one-free) deal offered by Verizon itself technically averages out to about the same price, if you just need 1 Fascinate, Amazon Wireless or Wirefly are the way to go. With no gimmicks, mail in rebates, or TAXES (that's right, neither of the two charge you tax), you can get the Fascinate for about half the green you would part with at a Verizon store.

Panzer Panic is a game that has been available on the Android Market for quite some time now in the form of a paid version, costing €2.99 (approx. $3.80 at the time of writing). Although it offers a really cool experience, some users clearly thought that the price was a little too steep, as it has only managed between 1000 and 5000 downloads in the Market. In response to this, the developers have just released a free version, which is exactly the same game, but with an advert on the bottom of the screen.

Remember the $0.01 Samsung Vibrant deal Amazon put up last week in response to T-Mobile's $99.99 sale? After running for a few days, the promotion ran out (the Vibrant is now $69.99), only to be replaced by another one, this time for AT&T customers.

That's right, the Samsung Captivate now costs a cool 1 penny for new accounts and comes with a free activation and 2-day shipping. This is the best deal on this phone to date, and it will probably last only a few days, judging by how long it took the Vibrant deal to vaporize.

Earlier today, T-Mobile ran a "huge" promotion, lowering the price of the Samsung Vibrant to $99.99 in an exclusive online deal. Since Amazon.com, Wirefly.com, and others have had the $99.99 price tag for ages now, we didn't give T-Mobile's deal much coverage (well, any coverage really). Many other sites did, however.

Seeing this, Amazon.com had a quick huddle this afternoon and came back with an even better offer of just $0.01 for new activations. That's 1 penny short of being absolutely free.

Sadly, upgrades are still $149.99 but those of you looking for that extra kick in the butt to switch over to T-Mo may have just run into the right boot.

Are you still death gripping your phone into oblivion, wishing that your signal would maintain long enough to make just one call? Don’t worry we hear you, and apparently, so do the folks over at Samsung!

There have been a few tweets flying around Samsung’s UK twitter page lately, handing out free Galaxy S phones to five lucky British individuals. Before you all rush to Twitter and start sending tweets out to Samsung though, you should probably know that all may not be how it seems.
