developing android applications with adobe air

The 5th Android Police book giveaway is now over, and we've picked the winners. A copy of Developing Android Applications with Adobe AIR will be shipped to each of the following readers, selected by O'Reilly and Android Police, who answered this question:

Why do you think developers should build their apps with Adobe AIR instead of using a conventional approach?

Jeff:

I've long thought AIR made sense as a mobile development platform due to its ease of development and cross-platform potential.

When we found Medieval Software's new app called Dual File Manager XT yesterday, we jumped on it right away due to its 2-pane support. Ever since the '90s, 2-pane "orthodox" file managers like the Midnight, Norton, Volkov, and most recently Total Commander have been an absolute necessity on any computer I use.

In fact, once I install a Windows OS nowadays, Total Commander is the first program that follows. Those who try 2-pane file managers can't (or rather shouldn't want to) go back to the conventional Explorer-style layouts - the level of productivity they bring is unparalleled.

If you're like us, you probably spend a little bit of time in your Android device's directory system, hunting down stray files or unused app folders ripe for deletion. Or, more frustratingly, moving files between folders. This has never been particularly easy on Android, because you're limited to enough room on most handsets for one open file directory at a time - but no more.

Update: In response to a lot of you who are asking for root support, the app developer wrote in to say this:

"yes ROOT will be added if the program along with additional features."

Even with robust file management applications like Astro, moving files from folder to folder is a bit of a pain.

In the 6th weekly giveaway of Android books, Android Police has partnered with yet another great publishing company that I'm sure everyone has heard of before - For Dummies. Don't worry, O'Reilly and informIT fans, we'll continue giving out their books as well, switching between all 3 companies as we go along.

Android Application Development For Dummies

Today, we're giving away Android Application Development For Dummies, published in December 2010, and, as usual, we're asking for nothing but a minute of your time in return.

swiftkey x

Just a week after shedding its beta status, the ever-popular keyboard SwiftKey X is being featured in the Amazon Appstore as the free app of the day, down from its usual $3.99 price. If you've never used the beta, SwiftKey X has a few great features that distinguish it from many other alternative keyboards:

  • Improved word prediction using TouchType's Fluency Prediction Engine
  • Personalization Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, and SMS
  • "Precise" and "Rapid" typing styles
  • Supports multiple languages simultaneously

This is actually the second time one of TouchType's apps have been featured on the Appstore, the first being the original SwiftKey a few months back, so there's hope for tablet owners that SwiftKey Tablet X may be featured soon as well.

In the past few months, we have been giving away various devices in what I dubbed the "Giant Giveaway" series. Despite having given away 3 tablets (the XOOM, the G-Slate, and the Tab 10.1) already, we're not planning on slowing down; in fact, we're going to accelerate the giveaway process. Rather than keep the giveaways open for 2 weeks, we're going to run them for only about 5-7 days instead, as otherwise our shelves will collapse under the weight of all the goodies and ruin them, and we don't want that, do we?

Wow, what a week it has been! Our 3rd giant giveaway, featuring the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, has blown the lids off all other promotions we've done in the past, with over 6,000 entries via Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. Google+ users really kicked this up a notch this time around, as the new network absolutely exploded in its first week of existence, already driving more traffic to the site than Twitter and Facebook combined.

To help aspiring Android developers get off the ground and develop our next dream app, Android Police has partnered with O'Reilly Media, one of the largest technical book publishers, to give away a multitude of Android books to our readers. Each week or so for the next few months, we'll be giving away a different O'Reilly Android book, asking for nothing but a minute of your time in return.

Developing Android Applications with Adobe AIR

For the fifth contest in the series, we chose to give away Véronique Brossier's Developing Android Applications with Adobe AIR, which was published by O'Reilly just a few months back (in April 2011, to be exact).

If you've been following Android Police, you've probably seen the Android programming book giveaway series that we're doing together with O'Reilly Media and now informIT (#1, #2, #3, #4). It's time to announce the winners of the 4th giveaway, selected by the joint AP/informIT panel, who will receive a brand new copy of Android Wireless Application Development (2nd Edition).

Again, the question was:

What kind of app are you thinking of making as your first project?

While we're on the subject of why Sprint is the carrier to go with nowadays ($50 contract extension credit "just because," unlimited data without expensive and complicated tiers **cough Verizon cough**, great customer service, etc.), I wanted to throw yet another reason for existing Sprint customers to stick around.

Side-by-side with the $50 credit promo that I mentioned above, it turns out that the company is running a different deal in parallel that pays you for a month of free service right back to your account upon contract renewal for 2 more years.
