O'Reilly's Android Open conference, which is happening October 9-11, is our first real media sponsorship of an Android event (yay!), and as media partners, we were given 2 free tickets to the event, along with an exclusive 20% off code: AN11AP.
Since nothing would make us happier than giving away the 2 free tickets we've gotten (worth $1295 each) to the most deserving AP readers, I had Cameron immediately fire up the giveaway last week. After receiving about 50 entries, it's now time to announce the two winners who would be getting entry to the conference and Sunday workshops for free.
Wow, you guys sure like Android figurines - with almost 1,100 entries, the giveaway post is now our most commented post ever. After letting a whirlwind of randomness and chaos work its magic on the list of entries, I'm now ready to congratulate the following folks who will be getting a free figurine from VinylFigurines.com shipped to their doorsteps:
We've passed your emails to Omar from Vinyl Figurines, so you should be getting some info from him shortly. Thanks for playing!
If you didn't win, you may still consider picking up some figurines straight from VinylFigurines.com - I certainly love their company.
Yep, you read that right - we're giving away a DROID BIONIC, and it's not even out yet (well, it will be in less than 24 hours), courtesy of the awesome folks over at Stack Exchange. Why? Because we want to help supercharge Stack's amazing Android Q&A site, Android Stack Exchange.
Android Stack Exchange, a child of the StackOverflow family of sites, is sort of like a dedicated Android Q&A Reddit + Wiki + FAQ for answering all your questions about everything Android. It really is pretty amazing, and unlike Stack Overflow, it's not aimed at developers - on the contrary, it's for users like me and you.
A few weeks ago, we covered an incredible new camera app called Paper Camera. It's unique in nature because it offers amazing real-time effects (as opposed to post-processed effects, like most other third-party camera apps), like cartoon, sketch, comic book, old printer, neon, bleaching, half-time, noir, newspaper, and more.
The app is normally a couple of bucks in the Android Market, but for this week, GetJar is offering the full version absolutely free of charge. I stand corrected - Paper Camera, along with all other GetJar Gold apps, will remain free indefinitely!
This is definitely one of the most unique camera apps that I've ever seen, and now there is no reason not to have it installed.
Many of you have been asking how you could get your hands on those little Android guys that you can usually see hanging out in my reviews. Like these ones here:
I've personally acquired them over time - at Google I/O, the Lookout party, and Dead Zebra itself (no, you can't have mine!), but that's not the only way.
A good friend of ours, Omar Trujillo, also known as @0mie, partnered with us to promote his official vinyl figurines store where you can pick up authentic, Google-licensed, Dead Zebra-designed vinyl Android figurines and give them a new home.
With over 7400 entries from Facebook, Google+, and Twitter (in order of popularity), the 6th "supercharged" giveaway ended up being our largest giveaway yet. And no wonder - in addition to the usual main prize, the winner will also get a JAMBOX, a keyboard dock, and a $25 giftcard.
Before I move on to the winner, selected at random, I'd like to thank NVIDIA for providing the prizes. Check out their Tegra Zone on the web or on the Android Market.
And now - the winner!
Unfortunately, since there is only 1 grand prize and over 7,400 entries, the chance of winning one is...
There are dozens of alternative alarms out there, but ever since I discovered WakeVoiceway back in November, it's been my favorite. The biggest reason: I can lay in bed for a few minutes after I wake up and not feel bad about it since WakeVoice reads me the weather and news (it can also read your horoscope and, depending on your phone, your calendar). The app uses the stock Android speech synthesis voice, but third-party voices are linked from within the app and can be purchased. Better still, WakeVoice features voice recognition. Rather than having to find your phone to hit "Snooze" or "Stop," you can just say it using voice commands.
Our 6th and largest ever giant giveaway is already underway, but where is the winner of the 5th one? You can blame me for that - I decided to take a little vacation and have only had time for peeking in here and there. Organizing and sorting through the entries is no small feat, and I finally found a couple of hours to do so on the quiet (for now - the hurricane is coming! :-S) coast of Cape Cod.
With over 4500 entries from Facebook, Google+, and Twitter (in this order of popularity), the 5th giveaway was great success.
