Sure, the Galaxy S III is the first major flagship device to get Jelly Bean outside the Nexus line. That's not fast enough for you, though, is it? Of course not! We can do better! Or, more accurately, XDA can do better. In fact, a TouchWiz Jelly Bean ROM has found its way to the development forum giant's threads already!

The build is still unofficial and obviously there are inherent risks to flashing it. Some users are reporting trouble with MMS, and as usual, root is not guaranteed to remain intact. Be sure to read through the thread before doing anything fancy with your phone.

Let's face it. The patent system is a mess. Applying for a patent can be a process that takes years. Then there's the issue of prior art. Is this patent valid? Was it obvious? Should it have been granted in the first place? And that's without getting into whether or not other devices infringe. It can be a huge cluster of ugly. Enter AskPatents. This new Stack Exchange site has been set up to crowd source the finding of prior art and researching whether or not patents are valid.

The site functions very similarly to other hivemind information hubs like Metafilter or, you know, Stack Exchange.

Tapatalk, the mobile forum app "designed for forum superstars," can now be had for $0.99 in the Play Store, down a full $2.00 from its normal price.

For those unfamiliar, Tapatalk is one of the most popular mobile forum apps in existence, and bills itself as "the only and best fully-functional forum app in the market." The app allows users to quickly access, read, and participate in many of their favorite online forums through a smooth, intuitive interface.

The app does a fantastic job of streamlining the process of participating in forums by allowing users to access their favorite boards in a centralized location with a unified layout.

Everyone knows and loves Dropbox, and with build 1.3.0.6, its Android version is about to get even better. For now it's but a preview -- a "forum build," by official Dropbox terminology -- though we'd expect that to change soon, as in my experience it seems quite stable.

The main addition here is "optimization" for Android 4.0, presumably consisting mainly of performance tweaks. Additionally, the update features:

  • support for foreign languages
  • quick offline access to files ("favorites")
  • the ability to bulk upload photos and videos
  • the option to rename files and folders
  • single-tap access to all file and folder actions
  • an improved gallery
  • uploading from and exporting to local storage
  • the obligatory bug fixes

Notion Ink is one of the most controversial companies in recent Android history - it's gone through product delays, building up one of the most passionate communities around, followed by communication issues that you could write a suspenseful thriller about (I am fairly sure there is enough for a trilogy with twists at the end of every chapter), and some of the weirdest reasons for shipments delays we've ever seen.

So far, the only communication methods available were commenting on the official blog, where your thoughts were quickly drowned in a sea of others', and emailing customer support, which probably resulted in more frustration and rage than trying to have a meaningful conversation with a concrete wall (those walls just don't get it, do they?).

Motorola's ruggedized DEFY (which our own Brad Ganley reviewed) is a pretty cool phone. In my book, any time you can stick a gadget in a glass of water (or beer, as the case may be) with absolutely zero negative repercussions, I'm interested. The DEFY is no poser - Motorola's made the first industrial-strength Android.

Unfortunately, a substantial number of users across the globe are reporting a fatal flaw with the device, and surprisingly it's not MOTOBLUR-related. The earpiece speaker, which is necessary to actually hear the person you're talking to, is failing on DEFY devices that are only weeks old.

This is a short PSA for those of you who are xda-developers forum fans. I know there are quite a few, considering xda is leading the poll in this post Android Forum Roundup: Where Do You Go For Android Help And Discussion? Vote For Your Favorites.

Xda forum admins have been working on a new skin, to bring an updated look to a relatively mediocre (though so familiar) looking skin. You can test out the new skin by going to this url: http://forum.xda-developers.com/?styleid=16. This should set a cookie that overrides your current skin and temporarily sets it to the new one.
