It’s A Hit! The EVO 4G Sells Out

One of the things I love most about Android is that when one phone does especially well, it’s a benefit to the entire Android community. The more users that have Android phones in their hand, the more incentive developers have to focus on the Android platform.

In this case, the phone doing especially well is the EVO 4G, which shattered Sprint’s single day sales record, and now, is completely sold out after being on the market for only 4 days.

EVO 4G users, rejoice! As of a few minutes ago, you can enjoy unlimited free WiFi/Bluetooth tethering using the Wireless Tether for Root users (or simply android-wifi-tether) app.

The app's main committer Harald Mue, who doesn't even have the EVO in his possession, together with a community contributor Andrew Robinson (who does have one) have figured out what was going wrong with the EVO compared to other phones and together collaborated on a fix all within 2 days of finding the problem

Hey, wait a minute, wasn't the EVO released the same 2 days ago? Community dedication never ceases to amaze me.

Updated: There Are Some Issues. UnrEVOked Is Here - One Touch Root For EVO 4G And Hero, Working Even After EVO's First OTA Update!

Yesterday, we reported that the EVO 4G was rooted, right in time for the launch day. The root method, however, required a full wipe and was quite tedious.

The same hour the root instructions were released, a new root method, called unrevoked, was promised and scheduled to come out by midnight. However, Sprint's OTA update fixing the SD card issue also patched up the vulnerability that both root methods used.

Fear not though, unrevoked was still released a few hours ago and works for both pre-OTA and post-OTA EVOs and only pre-OTA Heroes.

The disappearing SD card issue plaguing a whole slew of HTC EVOs, sometimes resulting in data corruption, has been fixed by an over-the-air update, according to Sprint.

I alerted the community of the issue last week by raising some red flags and starting a few forum threads, and voila - Sprint and HTC scrambled the fix in time for launch. Thank you, everyone, for all your feedback!

The problem with the SD card, which most users incorrectly attributed to the card itself being faulty, ended up being a software bug, so no device returns should be necessary. The bug did affect retail phones, not just the ones passed around at Google I/O, as also previously speculated.

EVO 4G Destroys Sprint Activation System

I’m sure Dan Hesse (CEO of Sprint Nextel) is celebrating tonight. Sprint’s had their share of financial difficulties over the last few years, and after the recent the troubles that Palm has had, they’ve needed a new flagship phone to replace the aging Pre and it seems the EVO 4G might just be that phone.

Various blogs and first hand accounts from customers have mentioned that Sprint’s activation system has been buckling under the weight of all of the eager, soon-to-be Android owners trying to activate their phones.

This is similar to what we’ve seen in the past with ATT and iPhone activations…in fact, I can’t recall the last time this happened with anything that wasn’t an iPhone so this is certainly promising news.

Earlier this week I've covered EVO 4G's photo (8MP) and HD video taking (720p) capabilities with beautiful shots and videos of Paris.

I could leave the subject alone, but you see, after Paris, I went to the south of France - Nice, Monaco, Monte Carlo, and other beautiful towns. I then fell in love with Monte Carlo and shot some videos and more photos of it with the EVO, which I can't not share with you, right on EVO's launch day.

Since I've already reviewed and discussed the camera and camcorder features and flaws in the previous 2 posts linked above, I'm not going to include them here - just enjoy the EVO and the beautiful scenery.

"UnrEVOked" - A Painless EVO 4G Rooting Method, Coming Tomorrow. Creator Says EVO Vulnerable To Hackers Unless Rooted

Well, this is fun. Minutes after I completed and published my post further detailing how to root your EVO, I catch a teaser for ‘unrevoked’ - a ‘painless’ EVO rooting method that’s to be released tomorrow. Unrevoked is the work of Matt Mastracci, who gave us our first sneak peak at a rooted EVO, and one of the developers who contributed to the hack.

As Matt details here, there are several critical security flaws present in the custom Sprint software included on the EVO, and these flaws were the driving force behind releasing an easy ‘anyone can do it’ rooting method for the EVO.

Good news for those of you that were hoping to root your EVO the minute you tear it free from the box: the instructions and files needed in order to root the device have been officially released online.

User ‘toastcfh’ over at XDA-Developers, who’s been providing us with teaser images and video of his rooted EVO for the last couple of weeks, has come clean with detailed instructions on how you can get sweet, sweet root access on your EVO.

Sprint Kicks Off EVO 4G’s TV Marketing Campaign With A Massive Rube Goldberg Machine

Not a ton to say on this, but I think it’s cool none the less. Google’s pretty much left it up to the carriers and device manufacturers to really promote Android so I’m excited every time it’s done right.

So far Verizon has done an exceptional job with their Droid campaign, and while this Sprint commercial isn’t exactly of that caliber, it’s definitely one of the better that we’ve seen (hit ‘Read On’ to see the video):

Unfortunately the commercial plays more towards the merits of Sprint’s 4G network and not Android itself, but I’m sure we’ll see both features share the spotlight as Sprint ramps up the campaign in the coming months.

The EVO 4G, which is coming out in only 2 days on June 4th, comes with a pretty decent 8MP camera. One of the best things about the camera is that it in turn comes with a shockingly bright for a cell phone dual LED flash. Here it is:

Wouldn't it be perfect if you could use these LEDs on demand, turning the EVO into a bright flashlight? You can do that with some other phones, and EVO's little sister HTC HD2, which has essentially the same body but runs WinMo, even includes a native app to do so.
