miui

If you are into custom ROMs at all, it's likely you have heard of MIUI. While its "fruity" UI is a deal-breaker for some, if you use any third-party launcher (LauncherPro, ADW, etc.), you'll find a well-built and speedy alternative to the standard list of ROMs (and you don't have to look at rounded squares all day).

MIUI-GINGERBREAD-540x141

Yesterday, the folks at MIUI Developers gave owners of the Desire HD and EVO 4G a tasty treat - namely, a new version of MIUI based on Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). The EVO and DHD aren't the only ones lined up for a taste of Gingerbread MIUI, either; on their news page, the developers state that versions for the Droid Incredible, Desire, Milestone, and Nexus One are in the works (in that order).

sprint

Earlier this week, Sprint sent out an invitation to a special release event at the CTIA WIRELESS 2011 conference later this month. After a less than amazing showing at CES, and the "innovative" move they made with the Echo, Sprint is due for a highly anticipated device to come to their users. Thanks to an anonymous tip received by Engadget (though in no way confirmed or proved credible), you may now start anticipating.

Nexus S 4G

Last year, after flirting with the idea of carrying the first "Google phone", Sprint dumped the Nexus One and went with the EVO 4G.

Fellow EVO 4G owners, were you envious when Sony Ericsson demoed the Xperia arc's full HDMI capabilities? Fear not - once again, the developer community has come to the rescue!

Android Central Forums user Orrebmas has developed a "limited time" public beta of FullHDMI, an app that lets you output any content on your EVO's display to your HDTV. Yep, that means you can finally get your Angry Birds on in full, 50-inch mode.

Unfortunately, there are a few caveats. First, simply installing an APK file isn't enough; to get FullHDMI up and running, you'll also need to flash a custom kernel.

MEWANTHONEYCOMB

Update:  If you're a Nexus One or Desire owner and you're feeling a little left out of the Honeycomb SDK fun, I have some good news. The folks over at XDA managed to get a port running on both devices over the weekend. Hit up the links below to check them out and remember, these ports lack the basic functions of a phone and should only be used by people who know what they're doing. Enjoy!

N1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961994

(Also, Brian gave the N1 port a shot. He only made it a few minutes before flashing to a normal ROM.

In an impressive display of nerdery, XDA member JsChiSurf (who you may remember as the guy behind the re-mapped EVO buttons and a shout-out in Fresh 3.5) has used a host of tools and tricks to create an app that allows him to use his EVO as a garage door opener. Check out the video below (it's on the longer side at nearly 4 minutes, but it's got all the details).

In short, he connects an old Linux server (which was already running in his garage) to a serial relay controller, which is in turn connected to his garage door, to do the trick.

It's no secret that my EVO 4G runs a custom ROM called Fresh - it is one of the best EVO ROMs, free of bloatware and full of tweaks that make it fast and efficient, while keeping stability rock solid. The developer, flipz, is very good - he's responsive to Sprint OTA updates and bug reports and usually sorts out any issues in a matter of days.

This article deals with a couple of advanced topics. If you’re unfamiliar with some of the terms, hit up our primers here:

Due to the recent EVO OTA (3.70.651.1), flipz just released the newest version of the ROM, currently 3.5.0.1, also containing the latest HTC kernel, which is said to do wonders to the battery life.

Aspen, loads of snow, and now coverage from Sprint and Clearwire's WiMax network... yeah, Coloradans pretty much have it all. Just over an hour ago, the nation's third largest carrier announced that its 4G network is now live along Colorado's Front Range (which includes such cities as Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and Greeley) as well as in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Sprint's already got two mighty fine devices - the HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G - on its WiMax network, and if the Shift 4G is as good as it looks, the carrier's subscriber base could be set to increase even more than it already has.

Big news from kernel-master toastcfh about an hour ago: WiMax (Sprint's 4G) is now working on CyanogenMod. This has long been one of the most heard complaints from CM fans with EVOs in particular (in fact, just about every time we post on CM, somebody comments about the lack of 4G). At the moment, details are light - for example, we don't know how long it's going to take to make it into a release, or if there's anything special involved.

Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long to hear more details. If anyone has any details, as always, please feel free to click that "Tip Us" button at the top of the page!

evo4g

Update: This breaks root! If you're already rooted, download and flash the rooted version of the update. Thanks Steven.

If you had Swype beforehand and you install the update, you may have issues with it. If you do:

... go into the installed applications settings (not the swype settings). First you must clear the application data, then uninstall the application. Then you must shutdown the phone. Then, of course, you must turn it on again. Then you can tap & hold in any text entry field, and you’ll get an “Input method” selection dialogue where you can select Swype again.

Here I was, innocently browsing the Yahoo homepage today (I use it as a random site to test my tethered connection), minding my own business. Imagine my surprise when the main navigation column suddenly started peeling off to reveal a so-dear-to-my-heart EVO 4G. Continuing to watch this technique, I observed a flat screen TV and a Blu-ray player before finally seeing the perpetrator on the right - Best Buy. While I'm not usually a fan of Flash ads, this one amused me and reminded me of the upcoming holidays with all the presents that still needed to be bought. Have you gotten your holiday presents ready yet, like that EVO 4G?
