HTC: EVO 3D, Sensation 4G (And Global) Bootloader Unlock Will Roll Out In August - Sort Of

HTC has finally laid out a timetable for the release of software updates on phones that will allow the unlocking of device bootloaders. It sounds like HTC will be utilizing a system similar to Sony - which uses a web-based tool as part of the unlock process. Why? HTC states that while the OTA software update allowing unlocking will start rolling out in August, the actually ability to unlock phones won't be ready until early September. So, at the earliest, your EVO 3D or Sensation 4G will be unlockable in about 2 months.

Unfortunately, there's another caveat: HTC hasn't exactly made it 100% clear that August is the date for the release of said software update for the EVO 3D and Sensation 4G.

HTC EVO 3D And Sensation 4G Get Sticky-Temp Root

In the ever expanding quest for root access on the EVO 3D and its T-Mo cousin, the Sensation 4G, another chapter has unfolded. XDA devs have achieved sticky-temp root on both handsets, which basically means that temp root will now survive reboot. This still isn't permanent root, though, as the SU binaries are not in the default path(s), but instead an alternate location which can lead to some root apps not functioning properly.

HTC EVO 3D Review: A Nearly Flawless Device With One Completely Useless Gimmick

To say the HTC EVO 3D has a lot to live up to would be a colossal understatement. Its predecessor, the EVO 4G, ushered in a whole new smartphone era - one replete with 4.3-inch, 4G-capable Android behemoths.

And at least on paper, the new EVO is a marked improvement over the original, packing a significantly crisper display, a processor with twice the cores, and of course the much-ballyhooed stereoscopic 3D capabilities. But early reviews have been anything but glowing, and the kickstand - one of the EVO 4G's most unique features - is nowhere to be found on this new version of the handset.

Skype V2 Now Working On More "Unsupported" Handsets

Yesterday, Skype with video was officially released to the Android Market. There was one problem, though: it was only supported on a small number of seemingly random handsets, like the Nexus S (but not the Nexus S 4G), Desire S, Xperia neo, and Xperia pro. Thanks to the ingenuity of skilled Android modder 0mie, that's no longer the case.

With 0mie's modded version of Skype 2, video chat should be fully working on a number of recent phones, including the Thunderbolt (running Gingerbread), Sensation, EVO 3D, Galaxy S II, and Droid Charge. In theory, this should work on any phone running Gingerbread (as long as it has a front facing camera, of course), so if you test it out on any phone that we haven't already mentioned, drop us a line in the comments with the results.

[Download] Updated HTC Watch App For EVO 3D Without System Update

EVO 3D owners: want to be able to use the HTC Watch app and have access to The Green Hornet in full 3D, but wary that the system update may not be easily rooted? Well, you aren't alone. XDA user str8upx has extracted the updated HTC Watch .apk from the system update and has made it available to download for anyone who has not yet updated. This will enable users to use HTC Watch to its full ability, including watching the pre-loaded Green Hornet film.

Also included is the HTC Watch .apk itself (not the update), though it shouldn't be required.

You can pick up the 3D on a new 2-year agreement or line addition to your existing Sprint account for just $150 right now. That's $30 less than it was yesterday, so if you've been waiting for the right price to pick up your 3D, now seems like the time to do it. Those looking to upgrade from their current Sprint handsets will still have to pay the old price ($180).

[Tip] [Updated] Don't Want Bloatware On Your HTC EVO 3D? It Can Be Uninstalled Just Like Any Other App

Update: It turns out that this may not be as encompassing as we originally thought. According to Reddit member apantek, only a very limited amount of bloatware can be removed, leaving the bulk of it untouchable (this has been confirmed by our own Jaroslav Stekl). The unremovable files include:

Footprints
HTC Hub
Peep
Picasa web albums
Polaris Office
Ringtone Trimmer
Spider-Man
Sprint Zone
The Green Hornet 3D
TrimIt

So, while Sprint may be making steps in the right direction, it's not completely there yet.

HTC Has A "Sense" Of Humor - Friend Stream Widget References Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Complaints about HTC's Sense UI becoming increasingly bloated are nothing new, but there's no denying that the skin has its upsides - and Reddit user TheEntireUniverse just unearthed another such boon. Behold, the preview image for Sense 3.0's "Friend Stream" widget:

For those not familiar with the reference, Jill Valentine is one of the main characters in the popular Resident Evil franchise, and the Nemesis-destroys-a-helicopter story was taken right out of the third game in the series.

So how does it all end? To find out, you'll have to wait for HTC Sense 4.0, which will introduce the revolutionary new "Nemesis Stream" widget.
