What's New/Coming In Android Devices: White EVO 4G, Galaxy Tab For Sprint & Verizon, Droid 2 Global, Samsung Continuum, And Droid 2 Global Delayed

It's definitely starting to feel like holiday season is winding up - a ton of devices that we've seen in the pipeline previously are now making it to market at long last. Let's take a look:

Samsung Galaxy Tab

The Verizon and Sprint versions of the Galaxy Tab have launched already, and the device will be coming to Sprint in short order (11/14) as well. Quick recap of the specs:

  • 7" 1024x600 screen
  • Both 3G and Wi-Fi
  • Android 2.2
  • 1 GHz Hummingbird CPU
  • 13.8 oz.

So far the reviews seem to be fairly mixed on the Tab. Right now, only the Verizon variant is listed at Wirefly, but we expect that to change shortly.

[An]Droid Does: Nexus One Controls A Lego Mindstorms Robot That Spins And Solves A Rubik's Cube In Seconds

Among all the Gingerbread waiting and Nexus S craziness today, this piece of news from the ARM Tech Conference in Santa Clara caught my attention and reminded me once again just how cool and versatile Android can be.

David Gilday, an ARM engineer, demoed a LEGO Mindstorms kit controlled entirely by a Nexus One quickly twisting and turning a Rubik's cube, solving it on average in 15 seconds. An even crazier demo of a 7x7x7 cube solver, this time using a Droid, follows as well.

I don't know about you but I am highly impressed with what this engineer managed to accomplish with a LEGO kit, an Android phone, and days of tweaking algorithms to perfection.

Internal Verizon Document Reveals Motorola Droid Pro Will Sell For $180, Droid 2 Global And Samsung Continuum Will Be $200

Engadget's landed a classic Blurrycam shot of Verizon's internal system showing the prices for a handful of current and upcoming devices. Namely, the Motorola Droid Pro, and the still-unofficial Droid 2 Global and Samsung Continuum.

In simpler, blur-free text, that's:

  • Motorola Droid Pro - $179
  • Samsung Continuum - $199
  • Motorola Droid 2 Global - $199

Not unreasonable at all, given that they're all high-end devices. I suppose this should also erase any lingering doubt anyone may have had about the two color choices for the D2 Global - we'll definitely be presented with the standard dark blue, as well as a white model.

Motorola Droid Pro Pre-Sale Starts November 9th, Handset to Launch November 18th

If you were hungering for more juicy details on the Motorola Droid Pro, today is your lucky day, as documents have just surfaced revealing the pre-sale and launch date of the device. While details are slim, the documents reveal that the pre-sale kicks off November 9th and the official launch date is November 18th. If you order between November 9th and November 17th, you’ll get your Droid Pro before the launch date - never a bad thing!

At this point we don't have a real number in regards to the price, but hopefully it will end up being near the unofficial standard of $200.

Motorola Droid 2 Global Details Popping Up All Over Verizon's Site, Still Not Official

The Motorola Droid 2 Global is really turning out to be the worst-kept secret since the Bay of Pigs invasion, isn't it? We've been hearing inklings of it since mid-September, including rumors that the CPU would be clocked at 1.2 GHz.

Now, Droid-Life's legion of tipsters have spotted two more official Verizon documents featuring the Droid 2 Global: a holiday ad featuring the D2G (above), and nothing other than a sheet listing the tech specs.

And quite a nicely-equipped phone it is. Think of it as a beefed up Droid 2, with an alternative color option:

  • 1.2 GHz CPU
  • 3.7" 854x480 screen
  • 5 MP camera with 2 LED flash
  • 8 GB ROM, 8 GB microSD included (16 GB total)
  • Dark Sapphire or Winter White

Seems a little weird to launch an upgraded product so soon after launching the original, but hey - I suppose they're trying to get a leg up on their competition.

Motorola Droid 2 Update Rolling Out Now, Bringing A Handful Of Minor Improvements

Word on the street is that Droid 2 users are now receiving/pulling a minor update. The official Verizon document on the update reveals a number of improvements:

    • Improved battery life
    • Heightened proximity sensor accuracy to enable faster screen response
    • View the Weather widget in both landscape and portrait orientation.
    • Simpler setup, improved user interactions, and better notifications for Visual Voice Mail.
    • Background Email Sync during display inactivity for better user experience
    • Support for email domain suffixes containing more than three characters.
    • Keep text messages organized with chronological in-box screen.
    • Edit text messages after you've inserted a video file.
    • Improved audio sound during recorded video playbacks.

    Real HDMI Dev Voluntarily Pulls App From Market Over Motorola Droid X Issues, Android Market Model

    On September 30, developer gman announced he would be pulling his popular Droid X app Real HDMI from the market. Now, it looks like that time has come and gone, as the app is no longer available for download from the Market, AppBrain, or anywhere else (as far as we can tell). He provides 3 main reasons for having done so:

    Issue #1 = Droid X 2.2 is broke and I can't fix it.
    There is (at least one) critical bug in the Droid X 2.2 that causes a statistical chance of the Droid X LCD Driver to crash when transitioning from HDMI ON → OFF.

    Amazon Now Selling The Motorola Droid 2 For Just A Penny

    Android smartphones you can buy for as little as a penny on a new two-year contract tend to be few and far in between, but it looks like Amazon's looking to change that. The movement started with them selling all US versions of Samsung's Galaxy S phones (save for Sprint's Epic 4G) for $0.01 on contract a few weeks back, and now they're taking the same approach with the Motorola Droid 2.     Motorola Droid Pro Official For Verizon; Fans Of The BlackBerry Form Factor Now Have A Decent Android Option

    Verizon has just announced the Droid Pro (that's right, the same device that was previously rumored to have a dual GSM /CDMA radio for global roaming, a 1.3 GHz processor, and a 4" display), and let me tell you, the thing's got a few surprises hidden up its sleeve.

    For starters, it's not a landscape slider, unlike the Droid 2. Instead, Motorola's decided to go with a candybar form factor for this one, much like the form factor used by RIM for numerous BlackBerries and also by Palm for the Pixi. That in itself should set it apart from the rumors we'd heard earlier, which claimed that the Pro would essentially be a world edition of the successor to the most popular Android phone ever to grace what us humans know as the Earth.

    Researchers Create Taintdroid App To Monitor App Activity, Find A Surprising Number Send User Data To Advertisers

     Researchers from Intel, Penn State, and Duke teamed up to study just how secure the apps in the Android market are. Specifically, they wanted to see what private data was collected by apps, and what the apps then did with said data. The results: 15 out of 30 "popular" applications sent geographic data, 7 sent unique hardware information, and a few sent info such as phone number and SIM serial to developers. Scary stuff indeed.

    This isn't the first time we've heard that Android apps are insecure - in late July, Lookout released similar findings. However, Taintdroid takes things a bit further - albeit, from a smaller sample.
