This article discusses rooting your device. THIS BREACHES [VOIDS] THE TERMS OF YOUR PHONE’S WARRANTY AND YOUR VERIZON SERVICE CONTRACT. Proceed at your own risk.

For those of you who have been wondering if the Droid X would ever be rooted, you can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. The folks over at AllDroid just posted that Verizon’s biggest and baddest Android device has been rooted!

So those of you new to Android and/or the DROID X, you might wonder what this “rooting” business is all about. We have published an article just for you: Rooting Explained + Top 5 Benefits Of Rooting Your Android Phone.

According to two separate sources on the XDA forums, the Droid X is loaded with the now-infamous locked bootloader present in the Milestone. If you’re unfamiliar, this site explains the current methods being deployed to defeat the Milestone, but none have managed to succeed without killing the phone functionality. Motorola locks the bootloader using a proprietary encrypted private key scheme, and without access to Motorola’s encryption method, the hope for unlocking lies in exploits. Currently, an exploit known as the “kexec” method ranks highest in terms of hopes of success.

What does this mean for Droid X users? Custom ROMs and recovery images may be a pipe dream, unless a serious vulnerability is discovered.

In a blog radio interview with a Motorola developer, when asked about how the Droid X’s HDMI-out could be used, the following answer was given by the Moto dev:

"The only time that we are enabling the HDMI driver on the device is when you are in the gallery mode. [...] The HDMI driver is not active any time outside the gallery"

As Android users are aware, gallery is the native photo and recorded video viewing application on Android devices. The mechanism of controlling the HDMI-out on the Droid X remains unknown, but for the time being it appears that, without root, the Droid X’s HDMI out is extremely limited in its usefulness.

This is certainly one of the worst kept mobile secrets in a while. It seems we can barely go more than a few days without more Droid X/Xtreme/Shadow or Droid 2 pictures leaking. In this case, it seems Mr. Blurrcam is on vacation and let his high resolution counterpart take a few more pictures of the Droid X.

There’s not a whole lot of new information at this point, but that’s to be expected considering the rate at which we’ve been seeing leaks. If you’ve somehow avoided catching any information on this phone over the last few weeks, here’s a recap of the rumored specs:

  • 4.3” TFT FWVGA screen
  • 720 MHz OMAP 3630 Processor
  • 8 GB of internal storage (possibly 16GB)
  • 8 MP Camera
  • 720p Video Recording
  • mini-HDMI out
  • Wifi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • MicroSD support up to 32GB
  • 9mm at the bottom of the device flaring to 11mm at the top
  • Android 2.1 (possibly 2.2)
  • Dual LED Flash

It seems like every other blog has different specs listed for the phone, so take those with a grain of salt, but this more or less seems to be Verizon’s answer to the EVO 4G, and to be honest, I like the looks of the Droid X much more.

Another week another leak – we’re visited once again by our old friend the Droid Shadow (AKA: Droid Xtreme/Droid X), this time with two new pictures and few tidbits about the phone’s software.

droidleak2

In case you’re out of the loop, the Droid Shadow is said to be Motorola’s latest addition to Verizon’s Droid brand, which we’ve covered here and here (note that I incorrectly referred to the Shadow as the Droid 2 – from what I’ve read since, this is not the case). This time, Droid Life was sent a few pics from a tipster that claimed to have a bit more information on the phone’s software:

  • Android 2.2
  • 9 home screens
  • No Motoblur
  • Dedicated camera button
  • “Very metal”
  • HDMI out

The ‘No Motoblur’ part is a bit strange, especially since Motoblur was pretty prominently shown on the ‘Getting Started’ manual.
