CyanogenMod: Nexus One, Desire, EVO 4G, Incredible, Hero, Legend, Xperia X10, And Many More Won't Get Official Updates Past CM7

The day that many ROM enthusiasts have been dreading has arrived: the CyanogenMod Team has announced the end of life support for the original Nexus One, along with other first-generation Snapdragon devices, including the HTC EVO 4G, [Droid] Incredible and Desire and others. None of these devices have official builds of CyanogenMod 9 (though plenty of independent ROM developers have done their best) and they won't be getting any CM updates beyond the 7.X Gingerbread branch.

The reason is a limitation in the media libraries of most of these devices, as well as a general lack of on-board storage in the second generation of Android hardware.

Droid Eris Owners Get Fix For “Silent Call” Issue With Maintenance Release 4 [Download Link Inside]

For some time, the Droid Eris on Verizon Wireless has had a bug that causes the user to be unable to hear the person on the other end during a phone call, and/or be heard by said person. A member of the Verizon Wireless forums, after receiving Maintenance Release 4, is reporting that the issue appears to have been resolved with the patch.

The update comes OTA and will reach most users in the coming weeks; however, you can download a signed zip from Google directly as well to get the fix right now. 

To install, place the file on the root of your SD card, reboot your phone into recovery mode, and use the install update button; your Eris should automatically find the file and proceed to flash the update.

Unrevoked, a tool that brought the ability to run applications that require root and originally developed for the HTC EVO 4G and HTC Hero, was just updated to version 3.

With this new version 3, Unrevoked finally brings a 1-click root solution to the HTC Droid Incredible that also allows you to flash a custom ClockworkMod recovery, custom ROMs, and take backups of your phone with Nandroid Backup.

Compared to version 2, you no longer need a previously rooted phone - Unrevoked 3 roots for you.

The only thing that Unrevoked doesn't do is unlock NAND permanently, meaning you won't be able to write to the system partition after the OS boots and therefore won't be able to uninstall various carrier installed garbage apps.

Droid Eris Update Coming July 17th - Bringing Various Bug Fixes (But No FroYo)

As usual, Droid Life has come through with some Mr. Blurrycam photos. This time, they’re from Verizon and show that the Droid Eris will be receiving a software update on July 17th at midnight (ok – techincally, it’s July 16th at 11:59 PM – but for all intents and purposes, that’s the 17th). The update isn’t Android 2.2, but that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given that the phone has been discontinued. Still, when the 2.1 update rolled out to users, it brought a number of issues – most significantly:

  • Numerous syncing issues
  • Weather widget instability
  • Bluetooth compatability problems

Thankfully, the update looks to fix all that, as well as improve various other aspects of the phone.

HTC Droid Eris Should Be Getting The Android 2.1 OTA Update Today

It's finally here - today should be the day when Verizon starts rolling out the Android 2.1 OTA (over-the-air) update that we reported on a few days ago.

The update page on Verizon's site, which provides benefits of the new 2.1 OS as well as the update instructions, still mentions "Coming Soon!" as the release date.

That last part, however, apparently means today, May 11th, according to a MobileCrunch tipster who sent in this internal memo screen:

We know it says "tentatively scheduled" and Verizon doesn't exactly have the best track record with releasing 2.1 when it says it is, but we have a hunch that it will actually begin on time this time around.

Verizon FTW: Droid Eris 2.1 Update ‘Coming Soon’

I guess Sprint was feeling a bit lonely: Verizon has recently revealed on their official support site for the Droid Eris that users can expect an update to 2.1 ‘soon’. Unfortunately, they don’t offer a more specific time table, but they do provide documents both detailing the benefits of upgrading as well as instructions on how to do so, which is definitely reassuring.

Reading through the documents provided, it looks like Verizon is going to deliver the update over-the-air, as well as require the user to wipe the device. Exactly how thorough of a wipe will be required is unclear, but they do mention that you will lose your contacts (though they are easily resync’d) and that while you will also lose the Verizon Visual Voicemail application and some system settings,  it’s implied that applications downloaded and installed from the Market should be preserved.
