At last week's IFA Conference in Berlin, Germany, Samsung showed off a tablet-optimized version of the official Twitter app while talking up all the features the the 2014 Edition Note 10.1 has to offer. Of course, at the time we weren't sure if this was just a mockup or screenshot mishap on Samsung's part (it does look exactly like the iPad's version of the app, after all), but it now appears that it's indeed the real deal.

The BBC iPlayer has made the jump to version 2.0, and while it may not have that long of a change log, the features it introduces are big ones. For starters, the app now supports full downloads. Users can download TV shows for free and keep them on their devices for up to 30 days. Just keep in mind that they will expire a week after first being viewed. Users can only download via a WiFi connection, but they have the choice between standard and high quality video.

There is a new Google Search update rolling out, and it's bringing a bunch of new functionality to Google Now. There are new cards for car rentals, concert tickets, commute sharing, NCAA football, updated transit, new TV info, and better reminders. It's like we're drowning in cards here.

hangouts

Given the major Keep update to v2 today, I got excited when I saw that Hangouts was updated as well a short time after. Unfortunately, it seems like it's a very minor bump: from 1.1.1.753199 to 1.1.2.778356.

A quick teardown revealed updated translations and some minor under-the-hood code changes that aren't anything to write home about. The changelog hasn't been updated either and still lists the added emoji support and other stuff from the previous v1.1 update.

Google has started rolling out a staged YouTube for Android update, and it's probably the biggest redesign the app has seen yet. We've gotten a hold of the APK with exact version 5.0.21 (the previous version is 4.5.17), and after playing with it for about 30 minutes so far, I can definitively say that it's hugely improved.

The biggest new features I've spotted so far are:

  • A brand new card-based UI - the app looks better than ever before.

Earlier today, Google announced a pretty significant update to the Google+ app for Android. Version 4.1, which follows 4.0.2, brought the following new features:

  • Google Drive Photos integration, including viewing, easier sharing, and auto-awesome/auto-enhance.
  • Account switching without having to log out.
  • Better location sharing controls.
  • Google+ified swipe-down-to-refresh (like Gmail, except with funky fresh Google+ colored bars).
  • Messenger extermination (finally, the Messenger menu item is gone).
  • Google Apps for Business support.

About a week ago, Google released a fairly major update to the Play Store with version 4.3.10. The update brought combined update notifications, the new Recently updated section of My apps, and a bunch of other tweaks. Today, a minor update with version 4.3.11 is rolling out. As always, you can download and install it manually using one of the links below.

Google is rolling out an update to the Android Play Store with version 4.3.10. The new update follows version 4.2.9 which was discovered on July 25th, only a week and a half ago, and brought several very minor changes. Unlike the previous update, 4.3.10 is more significant in user-facing features (yay, new stuff!).

There's a new Ron in town, and it's me. Ron's not the only one capable of doing teardowns, and we've already scheduled a duel to sort it out once and for all (whoever lives gets to continue the teardown tradition at AP).

Simultaneously with the Android 4.3 release, Google started rolling out an update to the Play Store with version 4.2.9, which follows closely behind 4.2.3 from last week's Nexus 4 system dump leak.
