Phantom Black HTC Legend And Brilliant White HTC Desire Launching In Europe

If you live in European markets, you may be glad to hear that HTC is offering a new color for two of their phones: the HTC Desire, which will soon come in "Brilliant White", and the HTC Legend, which will soon be available in "Phantom Black."

There's no doubt that each phone looks really slick, but you've got to wonder the purpose of a black Legend: wasn't its main appeal the gorgeous metal finish? The white Desire, on the other hand, is sure to be a lot more exciting than the plain old brown color it launched with. Check out pictures of each device and the full press release below.

T-Mobile UK's HTC Desire Froyo Update Now Officially Rolling Out

Unlocked HTC Desire owners have been enjoying their chilled Froyo update for over a month now, and today T-Mobile UK announced that its customers are finally going to be able to catch up to the rest of the pack.

Over at T-Mobile UK forums, Sorcha from the T-Mo team posted the following announcement:

Hi all,
We have some exciting news for all our Desire users.

HTC Sense Will Support Map Pre-Caching In Its Latest Upgrade

Yesterday, Engadget got some hands-on time with the brand new HTC Sense upgrade that will debut on the Desire HD and the Desire Z. It will support all kinds of crazy stuff we've been waiting for like remote wiping, phone location, and backing up to and restoring data from HTCSense.com. Another cool feature is map pre-caching, which means that the phone will have pre-loaded maps on it.

The end result is a much more responsive map experience, allowing you to zoom in and out and pan around with "no waiting". It also means that you don’t need a data connection to get around, a notable foible of the otherwise excellent Google Maps.

Amazon & Play.com Open Pre-Order For HTC Desire Z And Desire HD, Release Date And Pricing Revealed; Free On £40/Month T-Mobile UK Contract

Yesterday, HTC announced that the G2 and EVO would be going international under the Desire Z and Desire HD names (respectively). With the help of a tipster, Engadget managed to find the phones listed by UK company Play.com and on Amazon.de/Amazon.UK. Retail pricing ranges from £470 for the Desire HD to £430 to £499 for the Desire Z.

T-Mobile UK tweeted that the Desire HD will be free on contract for customers on a £40/month, 2 year contract.

Is the full retail cheap? Nope.

HTC To Update Sense, Also Introduces Remote Wiping And Location Services Via HTCSense.com - But Can Sense Remain Relevant?

Along with the announcement of the less patriotic versions of the EVO 4G and G2, HTC informed attendees of their London press event today that the Sense UI overlay would be receiving an update - in addition to new cloud services through HTCSense.com.

What kind of new goodies does the updated Sense have in store? We'll break down what we've got so far:

Completely new video/photo capture, edit, upload, and share system
New video/photo capture effects/distortions
Offline maps
Car app
Updated e-mail app
Probably a lot more updates to integrated Sense apps like Friend Stream
Presumably, back-end improvement for performance, bugs, etc.

The Latest In The World Of Android Hacks: Jailbreaking A PS3 With A Nexus One

Update: All good things must one day come to an end, and alas, it looks like Sony's just decided to issue a mandatory update to all PS3s that breaks this jailbreak method. Heartbreaking, I know.

If Sony's PS3 gaming system took a step backward in functionality when Sony disabled its ability to install Linux, it's just taken two steps forward again.

t4nav, a Senior Member of xda-developers, has just discovered a method to hack the PS3 using a Nexus One or a Desire! All you have to do is:

This is seriously impressive stuff - the guys from the unrevoked team did it again, and this version 3.2 is definitely their best release yet. Most of the credit, outside of the core unrevoked team, belongs to Sebastian Krahmer for discovering the exploit that works on all supported phones.

HTC Desire HD Caught On Video, Looks Even Sexier Than The EVO?

In case a blurry picture and some unconfirmed specs weren’t enough for you, the Desire HD has already gotten a high quality video leak to call its own, and with it confirmation of all the great specs. While they certainly aren’t anything shocking, it serves to show us that the Desire HD is really pretty much a GSM EVO – but that doesn’t make it less impressive.

The only notable difference I can see between the EVO and Desire HD (besides the lack of a 4G radio in the latter) is the HD’s brushed aluminum body, which looks much nicer than the EVO, in my opinion.

HTC-Branded Android Devices Wildfire, Desire, and The New Tianyi Headed To China On China Mobile, No Mention Of Google Or Android

HTC issued a press release today announcing four HTC-branded phones (HTC phones were previously branded Dopod in China) are to be released in China in a deal with China Mobile and electronics retailer GOME Electrical Appliances (the largest electronics reseller in China). Three of those phones run Android. One, the Tianxi, looks to be a rebranded HD2 running Windows Mobile, which as we all know, can run Android.

Unfortunately, it appears removal of Google branding from Android devices (including the Market) in China will continue with these new phones. This is a requirement for Android phones running on China Mobile, which is the dominant (and state owned) carrier in China.

HTC Confirms It Will No Longer Use AMOLED Displays For Desire, Nexus One—Switching to Sony SLCD's

HTC confirmed in a press release today that the Nexus One (which is still manufactured for and sold across Europe and Korea) and Desire will no longer be sporting AMOLED displays. Instead, HTC has opted to use Sony SLCDs. Their reasoning? The press release gives it to us from a nice, sugar-coated PR perspective:
