2.2.1 Update For Nexus One Breaks Universal Androot, Swype, And Other Aftermarket Keyboards

A few days ago, the code for the Nexus One's 2.2.1 update went AOSP (Android Open Source Project), meaning that the source code became available to developers. It was comprised mostly of bugfixes and other things that weren't major... oh, and it also patched the exploits that allowed Universal Androot to unlock your device. We had a short conversation about it on Twitter with Cyanogen (the conversation starts at the bottom and goes up):

As if breaking Universal Androot wasn't enough, apparently the new update also prevents existing installations of Swype and some other aftermarket keyboards from working. An easy solution exists though - just uninstall your existing keyboard and reinstall it.

Cyanogen Demos HTC Fast-Boot-A-Like On Nexus One

This is what happens when you try to one-up the open-source community. Just when we were beginning to think HTC Sense might have come up trumps with a real killer feature in their Fast Boot, CyanogenMod creator Steve Kondik's right there with a cheeky "Yeah, CM6 "does" too :)". Tweeting that the feature will be committed to the CyanogenMod source soon (possibly with the arrival of version 6.1), Cy noted that the Nexus One would likely last in this hibernation state for about a week. Now, let's see what it looks like in action:

Of course, as we have discussed before, this is not a real, clean reboot, but we can still see plenty of potential use cases - switching off in areas of areas of no coverage, periodic check-ins on hikes, and other scenarios where something quite close to instant-on would be.

GPS Fix For CyanogenMod 6 On The Nexus One

One of the most common complaints about the recent builds of CyanogenMod 6 has been that Nexus One owners’ GPS would suddenly take ages to get a fix or wouldn't get a fix at all. The most frequent solution posted has been to change your Mobile Network APN type to “default,supl” to enable A-GPS through your cellular network. However, for some people this still didn’t solve the problem, including myself.

Well, today on the CM forums, user kursed posted a fix that may be the end of many frustrated N1-ers’ woes. The fix involves resetting your location data using GPS Status with your SIM card removed, getting a fix, and then restarting your phone with the SIM inserted and getting a fix again.

[Video] 720P Recording Lands On CyanogenMod 6 (Froyo) For The Nexus One

No longer should Nexus One owners be jealous of their HTC Desire brethren. We’ve seen High-Def on the N1 before, and thanks to the continued hard work of Charan Singh and Cyanogen over at XDA-Developers, 1280 x 720 recording has finally come to an AOSP version of Froyo 2.2. The update.zip will only work for CyanogenMod versions greater than RC2, but it is expected to be ported to the popular LeoFroyo ROM and, who knows, maybe even the stock version of N1 Froyo in the future. There are still some bugs in the software, but these should be ironed out over the coming days.

CyanogenMod users rejoice: Cyanogen and the CM team are continuing to work feverishly to get CyanogenMod 6 into official release territory.

CyanogenMod 6 Release Candidate 2 ROMs for the Nexus One (and unofficially, the Droid), Dream, Magic, G1, and the MyTouch 3G are now available for download, along with Release Candidate 1 for the HTC EVO 4G.

[Updated 7/22]: Cyanogen Mod Nightly For HTC EVO 4G Released

Cyanogen, the biggest name in Android ROMs, has released their first FroYo ROM for the HTC EVO. While still a “nightly” build, many users are reporting it is very stable. However, as with most FroYo ROMs to day, there are a number of things that don’t work just yet – although it is the only FroYo ROM with working cameras.

The more significant issues right now:

No sense – it’s AOSP (stock Android) with ADW Launcher running over top
No 4G
Google Apps must be reinstalled
No FM Radio

There are a ton of smaller issues as well.

Nexus One Finally Receives FM Radio Support, Not Thanks To Google But The Android Community. Coming To A ROM Near You!

Ever since HTC released its version of Google’s Nexus One, the Desire, people have wondered why Google haven’t given the N1 any FM Radio capability. The HTC Desire uses the same Broadcom chipset as the Nexus One, so why does one have FM Radio and the other doesn't?

Official Word

Asked about this at their I/O conference, a Google rep said the company had no plans to bring FM Radio to the Nexus One and told everyone to turn to the hacking community for support, as there are a number of custom ROMs out there for the device.

Android Community Steps In

After six months of waiting, it appears that our wishes have finally come true, as a member at xda-developers, named intersectRaven, has released a kernel which, when utilized by ROM developers, gives us FM support on our Nexus Ones!

The long-awaited first beta (release candidate) of CyanogenMod 6 is available for download on the HTC Nexus One, Dream, and Magic devices as of 10:15PST this evening. While Cyanogen’s site is experiencing some seriously debilitating traffic, we’ve managed to get links to all the downloads for those of you eagerly awaiting a taste of what CyanogenMod 6 will bring to your phone. CyanogenMod 6 Alpha For HTC Hero Now Supports CDMA (Sprint) Devices

Lox of the CyanogenMod developer team that unveiled an alpha release of CyanogenMod 6 for the HTC Hero GSM has now added support for CDMA (Sprint) HTC Hero devices.
