[Quick Tip] Swipe Sideways Across The Notification Bar To Control Screen Brightness In TouchWiz, CyanogenMod, And AOKP Based ROMs

Yesterday, a great thread titled Share One Awesome Tip or Trick You Do With Your Android Phone, I'll Start... popped up on Reddit, and thinking I would be already aware of all the little tricks, I almost ignored it. By the end of the day, seeing over 100 comments piqued my curiosity, so I checked it out.

To my dismay, among all the great tips, I found one, courtesy of kennansoft, that somehow evaded me all along - and it was available in my own stock Epic 4G Touch Galaxy S II ROM of all things.

The tip itself is very simple - if you turn off auto-brightness, you can just place your finger on the notification area (as you can see in red below) and swipe it left and right to control brightness.

Time Warner Cable Releases Official App, Makes Your Android Tablet A Remote And DVR Control

Looking to replace one more of your belongings with your Android device, Time Warner Cable has released an official app, aptly named TWC TV, which allows your Android tablet to become a remote control, and manage your DVR.

Besides controlling your television from anywhere in the house, TWC's app can show you an interactive programming guide (including listings for up to 7 days), view a filtered program guide (which can display favorite channels or HD channels), search for programming, or schedule upcoming DVR recordings.

If you're a TWC customer with a Honeycomb 3.0+ tablet, head to the market, grab the free app, and toss your remote control in the trash.

Cisco Releases Free Connect Express App, Allows You To Control Your Cisco/Linksys Router From Your Android Device

Last week, Cisco released their Cisco Connect Express app on the market to very little fanfare, though the app is quite impressive. It allows you to control your Cisco/Linksys router from your Android device via WiFi, with the key features listed as:

No need to remember the guest password, it’s in the app. Simply email the password to your guest and they’ll be online in no time.

Time Warner Cable Remote / Guide App Coming To Android At End Of November, Live Streaming On Ice Cream Sandwich Tablets Early 2012

Likely not wanting to get left behind by the likes of Comcast, whose XFINITY for Android app has been quite well-received, Time Warner Cable is preparing to release a comparable remote control app for its cable subscribers at the end of November.

The app will incorporate full set-top box remote control functionality, access to the DVR interface, and an in-app 7-day programming guide.

The app is being developed for Honeycomb tablets (the test device looks to be a Galaxy Tab 8.9 or 10.1), and TWC has indicated that it's possible the release could be pushed back a little beyond November because of a heavy product release schedule this season.

Go Launcher Dev Team Launches Switch GOWidget - Free, Clean, And Compact, Yet Functional

The unstoppable GO dev team keeps pumping out amazingly polished products seemingly almost every week - they've already won me over on the launcher side with the GO Launcher EX (and its gorgeous Calendar widget), and yesterday they've added Switch GOWidget to their arsenal.

This toggle widget is compact and only occupies one row on the homescreen, showing 4 primary toggles you've configured, but with a single press of the "..." button, it opens up a full page's worth of other toggles along with the phone and media volume sliders. Pressing the Edit button lets you re-order all the items to your liking.

Do you have Comcast XFINITY cable? If not, this app may have you considering a switch of providers. The Comcast XFINITY TV app has been around for a while, but a lack of Gingerbread and Honeycomb compatibility has left many users frustrated - and drooling. Why? Because this app is awesome. Sorry to take up a big piece of your screen real estate, but those images need to be seen full-size to really appreciate the layout. So, if you're not familiar with XFINITY TV, it's basically a near-total remote and DVR interface replacement that runs on your Android device.

Comcast Releases XFINITY TV - Its 2nd Android App, This Time Targeted Exclusively At TV

Earlier today, Comcast dropped its 2nd mobile app for Android into the Android Market, the direction of which puzzled even me - and I work for a Comcast-owned company. The new app, XFINITY TV, is clearly targeted at TV viewers, while the previous app called XFINITY Mobile was a more general application for address book management, SmartZone email, Digital Voice, and... TV, DVR, and On Demand.

Wait, what? Did Comcast just release a separate app that does pretty much the same thing its existing app that's been on the Market for a few months does plus a tiny bit more? Let's see - both apps let you:

  • browse local TV listings
  • schedule DVR recordings and
  • fiddle with On Demand

The only things the new XFINITY TV app has that the previous app doesn't have seem to be:

  • changing channels on your TV (forgot your remote?)
  • *maybe* throw up On Demand content directly onto your TV from your phone (not sure - haven't tried this yet, but the description seems to imply so)

That is pretty much it.

Sonos Controller App For Android Coming To The Market In March, To Be Demoed At MWC

Sonos, a company that develops wireless speaker solutions, announced today that the official Android app was almost ready to rock your speaker setup and would be available soon.

Fully supporting multi-room configurations, the app will let you control music that is flowing to your Sonos speakers, sync all rooms to play the same song (hey, that's actually pretty cool), search your collection, control individual speaker volume, listen to online radio, and play music from a variety of services, such as Napster, Spotify, Pandora, Rhapsody, SiriusXM, and LastFM.

The Sonos setup is not cheap - the flagship S5 wireless speaker costs a whopping $399 and the multi-room setup goes all the way up to $1000.
