Who remembers when mobile gaming was an isolated practice, enjoying great mobile apps with nothing but a leaderboard to indicate anyone else was playing? This seems almost ancient these days, with mobile games linking thousands of players online for awesome MOBA experiences and apps that show the PC platform how it's done.
Niantic has revealed today that a new multiplayer feature tentatively titled Buddy Adventure should be coming to Pokémon GO sometime soon. This new feature will offer a shared augmented reality experience where players will interact with their friend's Pokémon via the AR camera. These friends can watch in real-time as you pet their Pokémon, and cross-platform support is expected, which means iOS and Android users can enjoy the upcoming Buddy Adventure mode together.
Shadowgun Legends has been updated to version 0.8.0, and this update brings a hefty amount of new features, content, and improvements. If you're unfamiliar with the title, it's a first-person shooter stuffed with over 200 single-player missions, and it also offers a wide selection of multiplayer content. It's basically mobile's version of Destiny, and with the changes brought with this recent update, players can jump into a new Capture the Flag PvP mode as well as work their way through the main campaign with their friends by their side.
Mika Mobile's Battleheart RPG series has been around since the first title originally released in 2011. In the mobile gaming world, that is ancient. As a matter of fact, the original Battleheart was so old, that in 2016 it had to be re-released so that it would work on Android 5.0 or higher. In all this time I never thought we would get a sequel, but lo and behold Battleheart 2 is here. It recently landed on the Play Store, and unlike Battleheart Legacy, it is a proper sequel to the original.
SMG Studio's Death Squared made the rounds for consoles and PC back in the beginning of 2017, and it was well received. Today it has released on the Play Store, which means Android users can finally see what all the fuss was about. There is no doubt that this is a well thought-out puzzle game that includes both a single-player and co-op experience for its main campaign, but the question remains, is it a good port?
The latest indie game to immigrate from the huddled masses of Steam is one that makes a lot of sense for mobile. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a 3D platformer, at least broadly: you control one brother with an analog stick on one side of the screen and the other brother with a second stick on the opposite side. If you ever tried to play both sides of The Adventures of Cookie and Cream (AKA Kuri Kuri Mix) by yourself, it's sort of like that, without the division.
Way back at the Game Developer's Conference just over a year ago, NVIDIA announced the SHIELD Android TV. While the presentation included streaming PC games and NVIDIA's GeForce NOW (formerly GRID) streaming game service, the announcement also focused on full-version PC games that would be getting full Android ports built especially for the SHIELD's high-powered Tegra X1 hardware. We've seen precious little of that - few of the big-name games first announced with the SHIELD have come to fruition aside from Doom 3 and Metal Gear Rising. NVIDIA must be paying its developer partners really well. That's the only reason I can think of that so many developers of 2D games, which could be played well on just about any modern Android device, keep creating SHIELD-exclusive games. So I invite you to wonder just how many potential sales Frima Studio (developer of previous wide releases like Nun Attack) is giving up by making Chariot exclusive to the SHIELD TV... and how much NVIDIA incentivizes developers to make up for those sales.
