CyanogenMod Team Talks Jelly Bean, And We Like What We're Hearing

When Jelly Bean was announced, it's as if you could hear the entire Android community speak in unison: CM10! Anyone who has been around the block a time or two knows, though, you just don't ask for ETAs on CM builds. Of course, it wouldn't really matter if you did at this point - the JB source code isn't even available yet. However, the CyanogenMod Team took the time to address many of the questions on everyone's minds on their G+ earlier today, and we have to admit - it all sounds pretty good.

The post starts by addressing the version number; since JB is an incremental update to ICS will it be CM9.1?

[Updated] CyanogenMod 9 Release Candidates Are Available For Several Devices Right Now

The wait has been a long one, but it's finally starting to come to a close. The CM team has officially released several RC-level builds of CyanogenMod 9 for many high-profile devices, including the Galaxy Nexus (GSM), several Galaxy S II variants, and the Nexus S and Nexus S 4G.

For the complete list, head to the source link below. As always, make absolutely sure that you're downloading the correct ROM for your device, and if you have any reservations, ask in a forum before flashing, and always make a backup first. Otherwise, happy flashing!

Update: The folks over at the CyanogenMod blog have just officially announced what we already knew was available, and the total number of devices with an available RC1 is 37, so head over to the downloads page to see if you're on the list.

[Update: Galaxy Tab 8.9 Too] Official CM9 Nightlies Arrive For The International Galaxy S III

CyanogenMod 9 may still be a ways out, lending some credence to the claim that upgrading from Gingerbread to ICS is a very long endeavor. However, if you're willing to live your life on the bleeding edge, and you own an international Galaxy S III variant, then the time is right for you: CM9 nightlies are now available for your device.

This is, of course, still an early build, so expect some bugs along the way. CM9 has still not reached release candidate stage yet, which is itself still a few steps away from stable release. The adventurous and the knowledgeable need not concern themselves, though.

Official Cyanogenmod 9 Nightlies Now Available For The ASUS Transformer Pad 300

Ever since unlocking the bootloader and rooting my Transformer Pad 300 (TF300), I've been patiently waiting for the Cyanogenmod team to release a build specifically for it. Since they already support the TF101 (original Transformer) and TF201 (Transformer Prime), I assumed it was only a matter of time before a build showed up for the TF300 - turns out I was right, as that build just hit the CM download site this morning.

Granted, of course, this is the first nightly released for the device, so it's likely to be unfinished and/or have some bugs. Still, if you just can't wait to get some CM9 action on your TF300, now's as good of a time than any to get started.

Official CyanogenMod 9 Nightlies Hit The T-Mobile Galaxy S II And AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket

A few days ago, T-Mobile's version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, codenamed "Hercules," received a hearty scoop of Ice Cream Sandwich. Today, the fun continues for owners of the device, as Team Douche just made available official CM9 nightlies.

Definition: A "nightly" is a cutting-edge release that is built on a daily basis, usually at night after a full day's worth of new code has been committed.

It could oftentimes be unstable and not properly tested, lacking any changelogs, but eventually evolving into alphas, betas, release candidates, and finally stable releases.

Additionally, those in possession of AT&T's Galaxy S II Skyrocket (a device that has not yet been dealt an official dose of ICS) can rejoice as well - CM9 nightlies are now out for this handset too.

Linaro Android Nearly Doubles ICS Performance, And Now Parts Of It Are Being Added to CM9

News started to trickle out this week about a new Android build called Linaro. Basically, it takes stock Android 4.0.4 and makes it super-fast, and super-awesome(er). In fact, it can boost performance by up to 100 percent over stock. Considering how fast and fluid stock Android 4.0.x already is (especially compared to older versions of the OS), that's quite impressive. Don't take my word for it, though, here's one of the main Linaro guys, Bernhard Rosenkranzer, showing it off on a TI Pandaboard. The Pandaboard features the OMAP 4430 processor (the same one that's in the Droid RAZR), so this is definitely a real-world example of what Linaro is capable of:

As you can see, the Linaro build finishes long before the stock Android build.

CyanogenMod Has Now Been Installed On Over 2 Million Devices, Doubles Install Numbers Since January

It's amazing what a new look can do for a platform, isn't it? Back in January, we reported that CyanogenMod, the most popular third-party Android ROM, reached one million unique installs. Now, a little more than four months later, that number has doubled, according to CM's stat tracker. This is huge.

For those who are curious as to how the stat counter works, here's a more detailed explanation. The short version is that unique hardware is counted, so reflashes and reinstalls don't count towards the total. From CM's site:

"The data sent includes an non-reversible encrypted hash of your IMEI or MEID, allowing us to track unique devices without compromising privacy."

Cyanogenmod has been in development for years and only reached the million install mark, which included official and unofficial installs (KANGs), just a few months ago.

Have an HTC Sensation or T-Mobile Sensation 4G? Your day may have just gotten a little better - CyanogenMod 9 (Android 4.0) nightlies have officially arrived. While we're not 100% sure this ROM actually will work on the T-Mobile version of the Sensation, this thread suggests it's likely possible.

Sprint's Galaxy Nexus Gets Treated To CM9 Nightlies, ClockworkMod Recovery

Despite recent reports of data connectivity issues, it looks like owners of Sprint's Galaxy Nexus have a couple of things to be excited about as we head into the new week.

First off, the CyanogenMod team has begun cooking up CM9 Nightlies for the device, offering users a nightly dose of cutting-edge, ICS-powered code.

Additionally, the Sprint-connected Nexus is now privvy to its own builds of ClockworkMod's recovery solution – both touch and otherwise.

With official CyanogenMod nightly builds and access to what is widely considered one of the most popular recovery options available, it looks like Sprint's Galaxy Nexus is already off to a great start in the modding community.
