There's no denying that Square Enix makes some of the best RPGs in gaming history. They also make some of the most expensive games on the Google Play Store, and usually, they're one in the same. If you've been holding off on buying classic titles like Chrono Trigger because of an admittedly high price tag, now's the time to grab them: a handful of Square's games are greatly discounted in the Play Store right now.
Square Enix have released their latest Android offering to the Play Store, in the form of the sequel to the mobile RPG Chaos Rings (which came out on Android last month): Chaos Rings Omega.
Chaos Rings was designed from the ground up to be a "mobile RPG," similar to - but carefully avoiding the name of - the Final Fantasy franchise. It seems very likely that Chaos Rings is Square's way of testing the waters of mobile before going all-in on a made-for-touch original Final Fantasy title. Chaos Rings Omega, visually, appears little different from the first Chaos Rings title.
If you can say nothing else about Square Enix, the company sure is raising the bar on both Android game prices and scope. With the recent Final Fantasy ports, mobile gamers with some cash to spare have had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time in mythical lands leveling up and fighting outlandish enemies. If you're looking for something in that neighborhood that you haven't played before, though, Chaos Rings has finally been ported to Android, and it looks fantastic.
Chaos Rings centers around teams of characters that all join the Ark Arena to do battle. Each person has their own plot (one, it seems, really likes the idea of immortality!) and the overall plot of the arena itself only unfolds if you've completed the individual storyline for all the combatants.
