Infinite Protection: Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ case review roundup (continuously updated)

Every new phone deserves to be protected, especially when you have an all-glass Samsung S8/S8+. I owned the much more fragile S7 Edge with its steeper curved display. There wasn’t a day where I wouldn’t have the phone in a case unless I was briefly taking it out for a cleaning. Since Samsung opted for an elegant, unique design with the S8, the display is costly to replace. I haven’t seen the official cost to repair the phone's display yet; although I’d imagine it’s more than the $250 for the S7 Edge. No case will guarantee 100% protection for your phone, but it will provide significantly more protection than no case at all.

Samsung's 2Piece Cover for the Galaxy S8 is the most hideous and terrible case I've ever seen

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus are two of the most attractive smartphones that have come out in the past few years. With their super-slim bezels, rounded corners, and glass backs that come in a variety of colors, the S8 and S8+'s good looks can't be denied. Most of the accessories that debuted alongside the duo, such as the Alcantara Cover and Clear View Standing Cover, aren't bad-looking either. However, there's one exception to the rule - the 2Piece Cover. If you want to make your gorgeous new phone look like absolute crap, you should seriously consider one of these.

Spigen is one of my personal favorite phone case manufacturers. Its cases are consistently well made, with quality materials, and precision crafting. If you've pre-ordered an LG G6 or are planning on picking one up soon, then Spigen should be on your list of companies to choose from when selecting your case. Especially since they just handed us some exclusive Amazon coupon codes that will drop the price of six different LG G6 cases and a tempered glass screen protector by 60%. Nice cases, at nice prices, what's not to like?

[Update: Now available] ZeroLemon's 8500mAh battery case for the Nexus 6P will be available later this month for $60

As a design element, the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner has its fans and its detractors. I'm going to bet that ZeroLemon, suppliers of almost ridiculous battery-boosting cases and replacement shells to the rich and poor, aren't fans. A big honking fingerprint sensor hanging out in the otherwise barren plains of a phone's rear housing means a big hole in any cases made for it, and thus less space to shove every possible spare milliamp into a battery case. So it is with ZeroLemon's latest addition to its power collection, a battery-case combo for the flagship Nexus 6P.

[Weekend Poll] Do You Put Your Phone In A Case / Skin?

Protecting your smartphone is something that can be accomplished through both passive (e.g., waterproofing) and active (e.g., a case) means. But today I want to talk specifically about cases. Smartphone cases have endured over the years among a huge segment of the market, and cases have evolved into distinct subtypes - and oddities, like the pictured HTC Dot View above - to accommodate particular consumer demands.

What I want to know is this: do you use a smartphone case, and what kind?

As a phone reviewer, I don't really have the luxury of cases - I simply use too many phones to go out and buy endless accessories for, though if I did plan on using a smartphone for two years straight, I'd probably at least consider a skin of some kind.

HTC Releases An App For Its 'Ice View' See-Through Case For The HTC 10

HTC really wants to make a cool transparent case for its flagship devices. It started with the One M8 and the "Dot View" case, which adapted the windowed covers first released by Samsung and LG into a grid with Lite Brite-style holes to view the screen underneath. There was a revised Dot View case for the One M9, but for the new HTC 10, we're getting a redesigned and completely transparent "Ice View" case. Like the previous iterations, HTC has released a specialized app in the Play Store to let users operate the case.

LG Announces A Fancy Touch-Enabled Cover For The G5 Before The Phone Itself

LG is really excited about the G5. So excited, in fact, that they just can't wait until Mobile World Congress later this month. To tide themselves over for the next few weeks, the PR folks have officially announced a cover for the LG G5 with a familiar see-through window and the capability to perform some basic functions with a touch-sensitive material. Most of the "Quick Cover" is translucent, allowing things like the phone answer or decline slider to be seen even when it's closed. This is presumably integrated with the always-on display that was previously teased. The design is similar to HTC's Dot View design, though the dots that make up the translucent cover seem much finer.
