Verizon Motorola Droid 3 Getting Updated To Version 5.7.905, No Ice Cream Sandwich In Sight

Owners of the Motorola Droid 3 are getting a hefty over the air system update that addresses a number of concerns with the firmware and included apps. Firmware version 5.7.905 clocks in at 224.8MB in size, so make sure you allow at least an hour on Verizon's 3G to pull down the file.

As for system bugs, the Droid 3 is getting a few Google security patches, a fix for mysterious device power ons, better camera autofocus, improved call quality, and a few stability improvements around HDMI and Bluetooth. You can also enjoy using a wired headset without any annoying feedback after the update.

Kyocera Milano Receiving OTA Update To Build 1.006sp – Security, Bug Fixes In Tow

The Kyocera Milano - a mid-range phone released on Sprint last September - is receiving an OTA update, bringing the device's software up to version 1.006sp. The update includes several bug fixes, as well as a security patch, "changes" to the phone's roaming guard display, and Mobile Alert System capability. If the update hasn't pushed to your Milano just yet, you can manually check by hitting Settings > About Phone > System Update > Update Firmware.

There's no word on how big the update package is, but depending on your network connection, you may want to allow several minutes for download and installation.

Chrome For Android Beta Updated To 0.16.4301.233, Works With Custom ROMs Once Again

Google announced today on its Chrome Releases blog that Chrome for Android Beta has been updated to version 0.16.4301.233 (that's Chrome 16.0.912.77 for anyone counting).

The update primarily brings bug fixes, specifically addressing "issues in the compatibility check which prevented Chrome from starting up on some versions of Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich." In other words, whatever it is that broke compatibility with custom ROMs in Chrome's previous update seems to have been eliminated this time around.

While there's no official change log available for the update just yet, Google does list remaining known bugs:

  • 112923 : No way to toggle between mobile/desktop UA
  • 113140 : Youtube links do not prompt for which application to use
  • 113132 : Chrome for Android beta doesn't support configured proxy in wi-fi settings
  • Other notable issues listed here

Google also urges users to report new issues by filing a bug report.

DROID BIONIC 5.9.902 Update Shows Up On VZW Support Site, Rollout Imminent (No, It Isn't ICS)

If you're a BIONIC owner (sadly, I am), you've probably been itching for a major update to the device for quite some time now to fix a number of bugs, glitches, and other technological gremlins the phone has had since release. This latest update promises to excise quite a few of the BIONIC's worst software demons, including the dreaded black screen bug. The update has just hit Verizon's support site, so that means a rollout will likely be taking place in the next couple of weeks. Check out the changelog, below:

Software Update Coming Soon To Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – I905.EL01 Brings TouchWiz Enhancements, Photo Editing, And More

According to Verizon's system update documentation, owners of big red's Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 can expect a software update any time now. While it isn't the Ice Cream Sandwich users are undoubtedly craving, the update (bringing system software to I905-EL01) offers quite a few interesting features.

Among these are improvements to Samsung's Touchwiz UX, a new Social Hub widget, built-in photo editing capabilities, and The Daily – a news app that allows users to "access the best of print, web, and broadcast news from around the world."

The update also brings Bluetooth 3.0 compatibility, additional support for more Wi-Fi routers, DivX, security patches, enhancements to TouchWiz's music and video players, and built-in support for "industry standard VPN clients." There's no word yet on just when the update will be available, but we'll be here to keep you updated.

Swype BETA Gets Its First OTA Update, Bringing Context Prediction And Japanese Language Support

Back in October, Swype announced that with Swype BETA 3.26, the popular keyboard solution would have automatic update capabilities, replacing the tired routine of uninstalling Swype and using the proprietary installer with a significantly easier OTA process, which keeps all your settings intact.

In the keyboard's first OTA, which began rolling out today, Swype brings a context-based prediction engine, which learns from text you've already entered to better predict what you want (or meant) to say, while continually learning from your typing. For now, the prediction engine is only available in a few languages, but other languages are coming soon. Here's why Swype had to say about the new prediction engine:

New Dropbox Beta Brings Improved UI, Favorites, Renaming, Bulk Upload, And More

Dropbox, arguably one of the best file storage/sharing services around, recently released the new beta version of their app for Android, making it even easier to access files on the go that may otherwise be spread across several devices.

Besides bug fixes, the new beta includes the ability to store "favorite" files for quick offline viewing, bulk upload for multiple photos and videos, renaming of files and folders, upload from and export to local storage, and last but not least, a hugely improved UI which includes a more appealing gallery view and quick, one-tap access to file options.

I love Reddit. Like, alot. I also love Android. So naturally, I get pretty excited about new Reddit apps for Android. There are quite a few of them out there to choose from, ranging from full-on Reddit readers like Reddit is Fun, to purpose specific apps, like RedditTV or Reddit Pics. The holy grail of Reddit apps is a browsing app that has all of the functionalities of the web Reddit experience, while being easy to use and good looking.

Reddit is Fun has been enjoying the position of top reader app for quite some time, but earlier this year there were rumblings of competition.

Dropbox Drops New Beta v1.0.9.3 With Lock Code Support, More Languages, Honeycomb Improvements, And Other Fixes

If you use Dropbox on your Android device and either like to live on the edge or help the company test out the latest betas, you will want to check out this post on the Dropbox forums, announcing a new public beta v1.0.9.3 with some new translations, Honeycomb improvements, new Lock Code support for the security-conscious, and other fixes. Forum replies also indicated that some sort of a folder opening bug got fixed in the process, though I am not sure what exactly that bug was in the first place.
