Hands-On With RedBox Instant: Netflix Has Nothing To Be Worried About

At last, my collection is complete. Just the other day I received my invite to the beta of Redbox Instant. I was excited. The idea sounds great: it's like Netflix, but you also get four monthly credits at Redbox rental kiosks! Awesome, right? What's that? Verizon has something to do with it? Well, no matter. It's not exclusive to the carrier's handsets, so I'm sure it's nothing to worry about! I'm ready to get my hands all up on this thing.

Oh, how naïve I was.

I'm going to start by taking a look at the desktop site and the service as a whole, but don't worry, we'll get to the Android bit in its own section.

Sony Pushing Google TV Update Now – Chrome Enhancements And 3D Blu-Ray Capabilities In Tow

The official Google TV Team's Twitter revealed earlier this evening that Sony has begun releasing an update for Google TV devices. Evidently, the update includes performance enhancements for Chrome (chiefly concerning start-up time), and the ability to watch 3D Blu-ray movies.

If you're the owner of a Sony GoogleTV, the ~260MB update should be automatically rolling out any time now, but just in case yours hasn't shown up yet, you can go to System Settings > About > System Updates and pull the update manually.

[CES 2012] Sony Introduces Google TV Set-Top Box, Blu-Ray Player

Seems Sony’s making good on its promise to keep churning out Google TV devices – in fact, the company just introduced not one, but two such gadgets.

As of now, we don’t have tech specs for either of the duo, but what we do know is what you see above: both the NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray player (on the left) and the NSZ-GS7 set-top box (on the right) look splendid, and both have seriously overcomplicated names. Additionally, from the looks of it, they’ll support 3D TVs, so if you’re ~~rich~~ lucky enough to have one, I suppose that’s good news. Finally, they’ll both feature gesture and voice control, in addition to the usual Google apps and the following keyboard:

Update: According to The Verge, the keyboard is backlit and features – get this – a three-axis motion sensor that should be perfect for gaming.

Samsung Shows Off Two Google TV Boxes, Calls Them An "Experiment"

Google TV has met a lot of troubles on its quest to popularize Internet-connected TVs, not the least of which has been several lackluster reviews. So it isn't surprising that manufacturers have either ditched plans to develop their own Google TV products or at least held off on announcing them until after CES. Samsung, however, has decided to show off two of their own boxes running the software, though they aren't throwing their support behind the platform just yet.

The two boxes - one a stand-alone set top box (similar to Logitech's Revue) and the other a Blu-Ray player - are not even close to their final form, and neither even had a controller yet.
