Blackberry Playbook OS 2.0 Rolling Out Now, Brings Android App Availability With It

The day Playbook owners have been waiting for has finally come - OS 2.0 is out. And with it, the ability to run Android apps.

We first heard that RIM would incorporate Android app support into the Playbook nearly a year ago, so this update has been a long time coming. Of course, Playbook owners won't just be able to update and hop straight into the Android Market - the process is a bit more complicated than that.

Firstly, devs will have to optimize their apps for the Playbook and then submit them to RIM. Once accepted, the apps will then be available to Playbook owners in Blackberry App World.

[Updated x2] Blackberry Playbook Now 'Root-able', Allows For Full Android Market Access

Update #1: Well, that was much faster than anyone expected - RIM has already released the patch for this exploit. The good news is that the patch isn't yet available in the 2.0 Beta, but you can bet that it will be rolled into the update before it hits the masses in its final form. If you happened to accept the update on the current version and still want to give this exploit a try, then you can always downgrade the OS.

Update #2: Aaand the patch has now been circumvented yet again, less than 24 hours after it was issued by RIM.

RIM Demonstrates Android Apps Running On Blackberry Playbook

This morning we told you about RIM's plan to bring Blackberry Enterprise Solution to Android and iOS, with a brief mention of Android apps running on the Playbook. No sooner than we posted the aforementioned article did we find out that RIM had demonstrated just that at Blackberry World Conference. Take a look at the video:

Each Android app will run in its own virtual machine, but will seamlessly integrate into the Blackberry ecosystem. The Playbook doesn't have access to the Android Market, either - all compatible Android Apps will be available through the Blackberry App World. This does mean a bit more headache for developers, though, as they will now have to submit their apps not only to Google for the Android Market, but also to RIM to be accepted into App World.
