htc merge-101119-02

Remember the HTC Merge? Yeah, the one that HTC officially announced back in February. Well, it looks like it's finally available on Big Red today, but there's an interesting stipulation with this one: you won't actually find it in any Verizon Wireless store. According to an internal VZW document that fell into the hands of Android Central, you'll only be able to get a hold of this little gem at third-party retailers, like Best Buy.

merge-verizon

We've haven't actually talked about the Merge in a while, so here's a quick refresher of the specs:

  • 3.8 Inch Super-LCD
  • Global Ready
  • 800MHz Processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 2GB Built-in storage, SD Card slot
  • 5MP Camera with 720p video capture
  • Full Slide-out QWERTY
  • Bing (*scoff*)
  • Android 2.2

Clearly this phone isn't going to break any records, but aside from the inclusion of Bing instead of Google, it seems like a pretty solid device.

Sprint customers hungry for vanilla Gingerbread can stop holding their breaths now - the Nexus S 4G just went on sale. Sprint will charge you $199.99 for the Samsung-made device, but if you're looking for the best bargain in town, you'll want to visit Best Buy - they're selling it for just $149.99 with a new two-year contract. BB's upgrade price is still $199.99, but at least free shipping is offered by both retailers (ETA: 5/11-5/14 at Best Buy; 2-5 business days at Sprint).

As a reminder, this stock Android machine comes loaded with:

  • 4-inch Super AMOLED Contour display with a WVGA (800x480) resolution
  • WiMAX connectivity
  • 1GHz Hummingbird processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal memory

All in all, the handset isn't exactly a spring chicken in terms of specs, but the software is what really matters - and just like T-Mobile's version of the phone, the NS 4G delivers on that front with stock Android 2.3 and Google Voice integration.

sony ericsson canada

Once again, we find that the selection of Android phones available to those in Canada is increasing both in size and quality. The next two additions to that ever-growing range of devices available in the Great White North are to be the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY and arc. According to a press release from Best Buy Canada, as of April 28th, these two great new handsets will be available on Rogers.

Either one of these Gingerbread-running beauties will cost you $99 on a new 3 year contract. That's no typo, 3 year contracts are the norm up in Canada (it's something we're working on.) But, hey, at least you get a sweet new phone for $99 and Best Buy will even throw in a $50 in-store gift card.

Update: It looks like we jumped the gun on this one. The Inspire 4G will not be offered for free, it will be the Samsung Captivate.

It's no secret that we all love Android. But what do we love more than Android? Free Android phones, of course! Best Buy Mobile wants to feed our addiction with the newest episode of Free Phone Fridays (and in this case, Saturday, too). If you mosey on into BBM this weekend you can pick up the Samsung Fascinate on Verizon or the HTC Inspire 4G Samsung Captivate on AT&T free of charge (with a two-year agreement on their respective carriers, of course).

Yesterday, we told you that the Acer Iconia A500 tablet was available at Best Buy for $450, but if that wasn't your cup of tea, to wait one more day. That day has passed, and now the 16GB ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is available for $399 making it the most bang-for-your-buck Honeycomb tablet on the market. While the Transformer may be a very economical Android tablet, that doesn't mean that Asus skimped on specs:

  • 10.1 Inch 1280x800 IPS display
  • 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB Storage
  • 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera
  • Honeycomb

release

It looks like the 32GB version isn't available just yet, as I couldn't find it on Best Buy's website.

Earlier this month we told you that the Acer Iconia A500 would be hitting the Best Buy sales floor on April 24th for $450 and, well, it has. If you need a refresher on the tablet's specs, here you go:

  • 1GHz Dual-core Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 10.1 inch, 1280x800 screen
  • 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera
  • 16GB Storage, SD Card Slot
  • Android 3.0

The $450 price tag brings it in at around $150 less than the WiFi version of the Motorola XOOM, but if you're looking to save even more cash, then you may want to wait until tomorrow and grab the $400 Asus EEE Pad Transformer.

HTC Flyer

Everybody's favorite non-Honeycomb tablet is inching closer and closer to its US launch. The WiFi-only version of the HTC Flyer will be available for pre-order exclusively from Best Buy starting this Monday (April 25) for the rather competitive price of $499. It may be lacking in a dual-core processor, but hey, at least it won't be identical to the upcoming flood of Honeycomb tablets.

For those who have been paying attention, it's pretty clear that the mobile space is exploding, thanks largely to the rapid adoption of Android, iPhone, and, to a lesser extent, Windows Phone 7 devices. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Best Buy is planning to expand their stand-alone Best Buy Mobile brand by 600-800 locations over the next five years.

Best Buy's been a fairly major player in the Android space, often offering phones at a steeper discount than the carriers in order to attract new customers. That strategy seems to be working, so keep an eye out for a Best Buy Mobile springing up in a mall near you.

Canadian Android

If you travelled back in time to the middle of 2010 and asked your average Canadian about the selection of Android devices available to them, you would not be impressed with their answer - it seems that up until this year, the Android selection in Canada was about 6 months behind the curve.

Canadians, myself included, can now stop bemoaning their second rate options. As of today, two major new devices, the Nexus S and the Motorola Xoom, have been made available to those in the Great White North.

The Nexus S has landed on Videotron, Mobilicity, Telus and Koodo as of today, with Wind and Rogers expected to release it in the very near future.

sprint

A short while ago we reported on a rumour that suggested that the Nexus S 4G was coming to Sprint. It has now been officially confirmed that Google's second Nexus phone will be coming to Sprint in the next few months.

nexus s - sprint

Fared Adib, VP of Sprint Product Development noted that the first 4G powered Android 2.3 smartphone would deliver on the "promise of advanced data capabilities of 4G to deliver an incredible Web browsing experience". Sprint has also stated that the Nexus S 4G would be the first to receive Android platform upgrades and the latest versions of apps. Let us hope Sprint keeps their promise.
