The Android Market has been getting quite a bit of attention lately, with a 6-hour maintenance, a whole host of new fields available to developers, and the rumored web version that is supposed to arrive with Gingerbread. Today, Googler Eric Chu shined some light on the next upcoming feature - mandatory content ratings for Android apps. In a post over at Google's Android developers blog, Eric announced that in the next few weeks, all apps will gain a content rating level, specifically:

  • All
  • Pre-teen
  • Teen
  • Mature

Starting next week, Android developers posting or updating their apps in the Market will be required to set the rating.

As a registered Android developer, today I, along with thousands of other devs, got the following email from the Android Market Support team. The email informed me that the developer console, which is the interface used for publishing new apps, will be unavailable this Thursday, November 18th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST. The customer-facing Market itself will continue working just fine (or so I hope at least), but no new applications or app updates will be allowed.

It seems that the creators of 8pen have been listening intently to user feedback on their radical new input method (see our original post for a video demonstration), because yesterday they released a rather nice update. One of the main issues of contention that Android users had with 8pen was that it was not free, and simply took too long to get used to to trial fairly within the Android Market's 24-hr refund period.

Today is obviously the day for popular applications to add QVGA support. As Rovio did only hours ago, Skype have added support for the increasingly-common 320x240 resolution in their application. That's good news for owners of the HTC Wildfire, Motorola Charm, Huawei IDEOS and LG Optimus T/S, who were left out in the cold until now. Skype for Android has had some nice bug fixes and improvements added, too:

Improvements:

  • 320*240 and 240*400 screen resolutions are now supported.

Verizon's announcement of a separate Big Red branded Android Market, called the V Cast App Store, sent shockwaves through the Androidosphere a month ago, with the general consensus being: "we don't want it." Of course, none of us could actually prevent Verizon from fragmenting our Market situation further (they've already done their part with the MOTOBLUR to help fragment the Android OS itself), so all we have to do is go with the flow and see what exactly Verizon's cooked up.

You may recall Artem's preview post last week, where he showed off the latest in slick Android music players. Well, no longer are you at the mercy of filesharing site download limits, as PowerAMP build 204 is now available in the rather more dependable Android Marketplace. Cough.

With a change log of such length that it would put a cellular network press release to shame, it's fair to say that this latest version of PowerAMP is packing a few new features.
