Trillian To Bring Cross-Platform Chat To Android

Trillian chat

Chat on Android is about to get a whole lot better. Cerulean Studios, developers of cross-platform instant messaging client Trillian, are finally bringing their creation to Android. It’s certainly time – their iPhone application has been available for some time, while their Blackberry application is already in beta. Unfortunately, the first beta is still a few weeks away, but you can look forward to these great features:

  • Connect to Facebook Chat, Windows Live, Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP and MySpaceIM
  • Synchronize your contacts, avatars, status, accounts and more with your Trillian-enabled desktop or mobile apps
  • Get notified easily with Android notification system integration
  • Contact list sorting, grouping, metacontacts support, privacy settings and various ways to organize
  • Set status, avatar and display name quickly in one simple screen
  • Tabbed chat windows with bubble view, photo transfer, buzz and emoticon support
  • Support for Android phones as far back as version 1.6 – works with your good old T-Mobile G1 or the newest HTC Evo 4G or Motorola Droid!

More Developers Have Experience Developing For Android Than Any Other Mobile Platform

An interesting chart published today by BusinessInsider reveals that mobile developers, or at least the 401 surveyed, more often have experience developing for Android than any other mobile operating system, including iOS. Given Android’s growing market share, it seems only natural that developers are flocking to the increasingly attractive (and large) customer base Android devices provide.

While Android’s lead over iOS in this regard isn’t massive, it certainly isn’t insignificant either.

A notification about the new version of Yelp just popped up on my EVO, and without thinking much about it, I gave it a whirl. Ohh, version 2.0 - it must be bringing new features, I thought. Indeed, it was. And I'm in love with them.

Norton Smartphone Security App Launched For Android

Are you worried about viruses on your smartphone? Neither was I until I noticed Symantec’s Norton security application in the Android Market! The company has recently released a Beta version of their security app, which comes as a 90 day free trial.

I’ve been a user of other Android security applications, such as WaveSecure, for quite some time now, so I was intrigued to see if Norton’s offering brought anything new to the table.

PSA: Reddit.com Mobile Site Revamped - Looks Great On Android

Yesterday, Reddit (one of my most favorite community news sites on the web) launched an updated and completely revamped mobile site, supporting most of the functionality of the main website.

I checked it out in the Dolphin HD browser on my EVO 4G and found very pleasant to use. Here are some features that I saw present and a few comments:

  • there are larger, mobile friendly upvote/downvote buttons
  • messages, including compose, reply, and context functionality
  • viewing of your own profile and links related to each comment/submission (reply, collapse, permalink, parent, edit)
  • submission is there
  • search too
  • lots of space saved via context menus provided by little boxes with 2 down arrows
  • the view should autoscroll when you reach the bottom, though it currently doesn't work for me on Dolphin HD
  • full commenting works, including the little useful "help" link

You can access the mobile site via this shortcut: http://i.reddit.com or by appending .compact to any reddit url.

Tweetdeck For Android, Privately Demoed At Google I/O, Is Coming "In The Next Few Weeks" - Will It Be The Best Twitter/Social App For Android? [Post Google I/O Coverage]

Across from the Plaxo booth at Google I/O, where I was spending most of my time demoing our Gmail<->Plaxo contact sync, stood the Tweetdeck booth.

I absolutely love, love, love Tweetdeck, especially after the 0.34 update (which was announced during the I/O), so I took advantage of the opportunity to chat with the CEO and one of the engineers about Tweetdeck, some bugs I've run into, and future plans.

It turned out that the next project in the pipeline, kept under wraps for now, was Tweetdeck for Android.

App Review: Beautiful Widgets

HTC's Sense UI (user interface) includes plenty of features that could make those with vanilla Android jealous, most of which involve the home screen. Phones running the custom UI have their own set of high quality widgets, which includes a "flip clock" that plenty of Android users seem to clamor over. The widget itself is four icons wide and two icons in height, and includes a clock that flips between numbers, the temperature, and icons to denote the current weather.
